Free Agency 2022

Postby NorthHawk » Mon Mar 14, 2022 6:29 am

As it stands we have to fill some holes this off season.
What do we do at LT? I'm not sure Brown at 38 or thereabouts wants to play another year and with Russell gone?
Will us being in rebuild mode mean the better FA's won't want to come here?
PFT has a list of the top FA's:

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2 ... d-the-tag/

It's an arbitrary list by them, and players abilities might not fit what we want to do, but it is a reference point.

So far, we've only tendered (of our FA players) Phil Haynes so there's still a lot of work to do.
Do we go after Terron Armstead of the Saints? He's 30 years old but is one of the better LTs in the game the last few years.
How about the Commanders Guard Brandon Scherff?
Both these 2 will cost a lot of money, but could be the start of actually building a proper OL (ironic if they do now that Wilson is gone).
I like the idea of taking a player from a division rival especially if they are a starter, so how about Rams Center Brian Allen who's only 26
and someone who could grow with us?

On the defensive side, we need a pass rusher.
It seems to me that again, in a rebuild year some of the better FA's won't want to come here, but there might be one or two that would.
Perhaps the plan is to draft an edge rusher early so maybe a veteran looking for a good paycheck might be enticed. How about Melvin Ingram who could mentor a younger DE group along with Dunlap
and still provide solid Edge play within a rotation?

The elephant in the room is the QB situation. If we are going to take one in the draft, it would be best that we get a veteran who has played and started just to let the rookie
develop. QB doesn't seem to be a strong class, so it's probable that any QB taken will take more time before starting. I'm not sure about Winston, but Bridgewater or Mariota
might be QB's to watch.

Lastly, there are some players from last year we might want to try to keep.
Give Penny an offer - maybe a short term offer to prove the last few games weren't a fluke.
CB DJ Reed is someone I'd like to keep.

Whatever happens in FA should tell us what they want to do on draft day. If we don't get an interior DL, I would expect we draft one at some point.
If we sign a QB for a 3 year deal it might mean they are looking to next year with a probable better QB draft class.
Whatever happens it will be interesting to see what they do in the next week.

Nice, love this yearly thread. It all starts today at 9:00am PST where prospective UFA's agents can start to talk to clubs. That period lasts until 1:00pm on Wednesday where contracts can officially be signed and announced as the new season begins at that time. I imagine there will be some leaks in the next 2 days about where guys intend to sign though.

Good recap North. What will be interesting this year is if teams take the normal FA route and have to overpay for players to come to their teams. Or if they take the Les Snead approach of trading for players already signed and who have term left and instead give up picks for those players and get cost certainty that they deem worth the value.

The QB situation is definitely the thing to watch. Will be interesting to see which road they go down.

If Waldron is true to the philosophy of McVay then we would expect to have smaller Guards as the Rams interior is in the
range of 295 - 310lbs while their OT's like Whitworth are in the 330 - 340lbs range. Our Guards on the other hand are of
the larger types in the 325 - 340lbs range. Interestingly enough, Forsythe, a T is around 305 - 310lbs and Curran is 315lbs.
Will that mean we will see a shift to a smaller but quicker interior or will Waldron's Offense be different enough to accommodate
a larger interior OL? How might it look if we did sign their Center, Brian Allen who is 295lbs - can it work with one small
center and 2 hulking Guards?
We should know some of the answers in the next couple of weeks.

As mentioned in the other thread Quandre Diggs is signing back with the Hawks. And it appears Al Woods is also going to re-sign with the Hawks.

I hadn't seen that site before. Thanks.

I hope we don't end up overpaying for some of these guys - Diggs might be too much but it depends on the contract and guarantees.

Sidney Jones being re-signed as well. They are making moves fast before the official start of FA.

So we re-signed Sidney Jones for $3.6M and with incentives up to $4.4M.
I think that's a good deal for both.
It's a 1 year deal.

Edit:
Sorry, skipped over the earlier post.

Dave Wyman raved about Phil Haynes and credited his play with a lot of open holes Penney went through like a freight train. So if Haynes is the engine lets see the caboose signed too. So far crickets on the offensive side of the ball. James Connor who is goody but often injured resigned with AZ for about 7 million per on a 3 year deal. Id give that to Penney .

Wow, 3 yrs/24 million for Dissly to return. I like Will Dissly a lot (and I'm not a Husky homer), but that is a massive overpay.

I guess with Fant making a little over $2 million they could afford to pay Dissly a bit more to keep him. Everett will definitely not be re-signed now I would think.

Dissly is a good in-line TE and can block well. That’s something we don’t have a lot of.
As usual though the terms of the contract will tell us how much he will cost.

I really like Dissly as he's the complete package, the best all around tight end that I've seen in a Hawks uniform since Zach Miller. They must be pretty confident of his health in order to make him a deal like that.

And yes, it likely means that Everett isn't returning.

I'm sure they wouldn't have paid Dissly if they didn't see his effectiveness on film. So hopefully two quality TEs for a QB be some good weapons.

There was never a question about Dissly's effectiveness. He's made some very acrobatic catches and is a fantastic blocker, like having a 6th offensive lineman, reminds me a lot of George Kittle. The only thing that would make one hesitate about offering him a contract that big would be his health.

Boy do I disagree. Dissly is a do everything TE, those are valuable! Even with Fant ( a better receiving option) I think Dissly is our TE1.

That was my thinking as well. I looked and he seems to have been fairly healthy the last few years. Our passing game has run through our awesome receivers and our run game has been so inconsistent due to RB injuries, I haven't noticed him as much.

Depending upon who we settle on throwing the ball, this may signal we are going heavy on
the run game. The problem with that is we’ve not yet addressed the OL. Maybe in the next
24 hrs that will change but if we follow previous years patterns we will end up spending most
of our Cap space on last year’s players and backups. If so, we’re sunk for the next few years.
Now is the time to set the table for the future.

Plus at 25, he's just now coming into his prime, so even if we're rebuilding, he has the potential to deliver for years to come. Besides, we're not pressed for cap space, so who cares if we might have overspent on a tight end. Look at it his way: If we feel that we can afford to pay Dissly $8M a year, that likely means that we're not going after Deshaun Watson.

I’m not sure a top QB would want to come here and be stuck in an Offense that won’t or
doesn’t allow him to play in a progressive scheme. If Waldron actually has the permission to
run the Offense he wants, it will take a couple of years to get the word out and maybe
attract better Offensive players.

They don't care as long as they're winning. Entire reason Seahawks went south is they look an insanity shattering loss in that second Super Bowl on a terrible play call, lost faith in the coaching staff after that, and then it all went downhill from there. If they had won a 2nd ring and kept on winning, things would have likely went completely different.

All Russ has been watching is a team in decay and a coach and GM who seem unwilling to accept it. I've read people on these forums predicting our demise for a while and we finally had a real down year last year.

That's why I'm mostly good with this rebuild (and I don't care what Pete and John want to call it is a rebuild). We weren't going far with the old guys. I like the energy that comes with going back to basics. No attachments. Always compete. Give it a shot.

It will either be Pete's last ride (likely) or a reinvigoration of the franchise and another good run (we all hope). Either way it's gonna be fun to watch the team build up again.

OT Jamarco Jones signed with the Titans. C Kyle Fuller looks like he's on the way out as well as reports are that we're not offering a tender, making him a UFA.

Our old pal Justin Britt back to the Texans on a 2 year deal. I wonder if there was any interest from Pete? I think we can upgrade at C, Pocic seems barely serviceable.

I read the Dissly contract details on OTC. It's not so bad. Cap hits of 4.6 mil, 9.2 and 10.1. Only 10 mil guaranteed and if he doesn't live up it, he can be released after 2023 with a savings of 7 mil.

The total $ value of contracts is often different from the realistic expectations of payout.
The incentives, and guarantees make a huge difference in how a contract is viewed.

DJ Reed just signed with the Jets:

2:28 p.m. — Robert Saleh and the Jets add another player to their defense, signing Seattle cornerback DJ Reed. The deal is for $33 million "with upside" over three years.

That pretty much leaves Brown and Penny as our last 2 FA's that they are probably looking to take care of. And maybe Rasheem Green I liked what he brought last year. Shell and Pocic are questions marks depending on how they fit the scheme Waldron wants to run.

Too bad about Reed, I liked his passion and skillset. Good to see him get paid he earned it. Maybe too much for what the Hawks wanted to pay him.

I'm sure they wanted to keep him, but $11MM+ yr? Don't now how the league sees him, but seems steep....PFF had him projected at $8MM.

I think he graded out as our best DB.
With the 2nd most Cap space, it seems at this time to be suspect that it's good to let him go for 3 million.
But it's the same old stuff we've seen for 10 years. Sit on the sidelines and then sign a bunch of backups and never weres to larger contracts
than they got last year and then come out and tell us all is going to plan.

They originally built a great team. But they also presided over the great decline of that team with a strategy that failed to keep the talent level
near what is required to compete at the highest level. That pattern so far has re-emerged again this year and without a game saving QB, it's
going to be a tough slog to be competitive. Unless, of course they put it in gear starting today and actually get some good younger players.
We're going to have to overpay from now on as most players want to go to a contender, but that's the consequences of losing a big name player.
I'm sure at the end when we don't improve this team in FA, Pete will come out and talk about it and say something like 'We were in all of the
talks with players and John was in there battling to the end, but we just couldn't get it done'. The same old tired lines that Pete has used for
years.

The great team was built by “others”. Pete and John took/got the credit. And yes, it has been a downhill slide for a looonnggg time. Their personnel record speaks for itself. They should of been jettisoned long ago……

The Seattle Seahawks are projected by Overthecap.com to receive no compensatory picks in the 2022 NFL Draft. Compensatory picks are given to teams based on certain players they lose and acquire in free agency and are always between rounds 3 and 7
