5th year Option

Teams can exercise their option on 1st round picks from 2011.
It will be interesting to see if the Hawks pick up the 5th year option for Carpenter.
Whatever they do should tell us what they are thinking with him and the future of the OL.

For reference, his current Cap hit is about 2.4 Million.

I didn't realize that Carpenter's contract included an option year. In any event, to pick the option on a player drafted from 11-32 overall, it would cost us the average of the top 28 guards in the league, minus the top 3. I don't know what that number is, but I do know that Carpenter isn't close to being in the top 28 OG's talent wise.

I see where the Texans picked up JJ Watt's option. Kinda of a no brainer with that guy.

According to what I read, it's the 5th year the option kicks in. This is Carpenter's 4th year. Plus since teams only have until May 3rd to exercise the option and we haven't heard anyone talking about an impending decision with regards to Carpenter, I'd guess that this isn't his option year.

As much as I'm of the belief that Carpenter can still become a very effective guard, you cannot exercise this option at that cost. He has to remain healthy and be far more productive before a cost over 7 million is even a consideration ( and to be fair it would take MORE than a single season to make that worth it as well). They CAN negotiate with him next season if they WANT to at a MUCH reduced rate, and honestly, I ain't so sure that a transition tag wouldn't be a cheaper option anyway ( though I doubt they get close to doing that, at least with Carpenter)....

Doubt that 5th year is going to be picked up ( nor should it, regardless of money.).

It's a no brainer to not exercise Carpenter's option. Apparently he's working hard already this offseason, which is a good sign, but he may be beat out by Bailey or Bowie anyway (per the link by HB).

He's a decent run blocker and has had moments of inspired play, but I don't trust the guy long term. I understand it takes time for an OL to gel. But during that time, more often than not, you see something that's indicative of growth for the future. And with James, all things considered, the Seahawks would be wise to plug in another option moving forward.

No way is Carpenter worth $7.4M. Depending on who we pick up in the draft, Carpenter might not even make the roster.
