Should We Bring Back Clowney?

Postby RiverDog » Sat Mar 05, 2022 11:49 am

So what can Seattle do this offseason to address the lackluster pass rush? Gil Brandt, a former NFL executive who serves as a senior analyst for NFL.com, said the Seahawks should reunite with an old friend in Jadeveon Clowney, who played in Seattle in 2019.

“Clowney is now in a much different place, career-wise, than he was after the 2019 season, when he spurned efforts by Seattle, which had acquired him via trade, to retain him in free agency,” Brandt wrote. “After a down 2020 in Tennessee, a rejuvenated Clowney piled up nine sacks for the Browns, which would have made him the single-season leader on a Seahawks team that finished tied for 22nd in sacks last season. There is some risk in committing to the 29-year-old, who undoubtedly benefited from the presence of Myles Garrett in Cleveland and hasn’t played a full season since 2017. And there will likely be competition, not least from the Browns, who would surely like to keep Clowney around. Finally, there is the potential awkwardness around the end of Clowney’s time in Seattle. But there should also be a definite urgency to upgrade the talent base around Russell Wilson, which makes it easy to imagine Clowney returning to the Pacific Northwest.”

I didn't like letting him go two years ago, but now that he's lost a lot of his leverage, we should be able to get him relatively cheap. We need help on the DL, and he's going to be one of the best at his position on the market.

Pete Carroll quoted on PFT:

Remember how people just talked about all they do is play three-deep?” Carroll said. “You know, they don’t play anything else, they must be stupid? We were killing it for years, so we just [stayed with it]. The fact that our coordinators went all over the league on both sides of the ball, the offensive guys and the defensive guys, it got harder. It was hard on us. And so we stayed with it, but I just think as I’ve been pecking away at it for really like four years now, with stuff we’ve done subtly and we made a bigger shift last year than we had, to just continue to adjust. Just needed to make it a legitimate shift

With the signing of Desai and Hurtt as defensive designers there might be a place for what Clowney brings to the table.
I’m not sure we know what the changes are going to entail on Defense yet so I’m not going to rule it out.

I don't think that would be a wise move - or judging from Pete's presser at the combine (interesting comments) is a priority.

Pete has been saying for the last 4 years that pass rush is a priority so Clowney fits within the basic
concept of getting pressure on the QB. As well, he’s a disrupter so if they want the DL to get into
the backfield he would fit quite well.

It seems like Clowney is not particularly interested in the win as a team model. He seems more interested in his personal paycheck. I don't see the hunger to win it all from him. Not sure he's worth bringing back.

No, he is to late season what Dave Winfield was to baseball. Mr May.

Even now, Clowney still seems a bit of an enigma. He seems aloof at times and a me first kinda guy. I can understand how he left a sour taste in the mouth of some fans. He went to Tennessee and talked about how excited he was because his usage would be different than it was in Seattle.

But, he was often the best player on the field for us in 2019. He is an excellent run defender, he can produce TFL's, he often wins one on one matchups. He is not too old at 29. He has played in a 3-4 defense with Texans. (If thats the direction we are going)

For the right price, I would absolutely welcome him back. He played for 8 mil last year, I can't imagine he will make more than that. If we lose Rasheem Green I'm sure Clowney will be on the radar.

Clowney would be an expensive addition even in this later stage of his career...not sure if he would be "hungry" to excel as a Seahawk. Emmanuel Ogbah or Hassan Reddick might offer more "desire" if we go the expensive route...or Akiem Hicks/Melvin Ingram III/Justin Huston as "cheaper" buys. Could always take a one year flyer on Calais Campbell for inside rush.

I'm all for it. He won't come at the price he was trying to get in 19 and whatever else he is he is still often the best football player (or at least on the couple best players) on the field when he plays. People like that are important to a football team.
