Will McVey hang up his headset now?

Postby trents » Sun Feb 13, 2022 8:39 pm

In an interview this past week Sean McVey stated he was unsure of how much longer he would be coaching. He said the desire to get married and start a family was pulling hard on him and he doesn't think the time demands of being an NFL head coach would permit him to do those things the right way. If he hung up the headset now he would go out a winner. He's probably already made enough money to live fairly comfortably the rest of his days if he quit now.

LOL!!!

The pull for a family might be hard, but he doesn’t have kids yet. I don’t see any scenario where he really hangs it up anytime soon. We are going to have to deal with him for awhile!

He is engaged. His contract expires at the end of 2023. So, it wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't sign another one and gets married in the meantime. I don't know how old his fiance is but McVey is 36 I think. If she's close to his age there is not much more time to make a baby.

Good for him if he does. He has all the money he needs to retire if he doesn't demand a lavish lifestyle and having their dad around would be critical for his future kids.

Like all super successful people he has an internal fire that will probably never be quenched, so if he retired, I would expect him back in a year or so because it's part of who he is.
At his age, he would have to find something else to do so maybe he ends up in the broadcast booth but he would still have that desire to coach. I doubt he retires this early.

This is certainly true for the vast, vast majority. But as a counterpoint: I'd say I'm pretty successful. PhD, tenured professor at 34, own my home outright, wife and 2 kids, etc. I've always been fortunate enough to have a ton of time with my kids (now 10 and 12) because I live a 2 minute bike ride from my office and come home for lunch, and I've always valued time with my family over anything. But after I got the taste of what even more family life is like during the pandemic, I'm realizing that perhaps this is the time to use my financial flexibility to retire early and spend more time with my kids before they leave the house. And then, who knows? Chances are good that I'll continue to teach in an adjunct role just because I love it, but I wouldn't underestimate just how much values can change when you see other ways to live. If McVay likes fatherhood as much as he thinks, I could see him searching for jobs that allow more of a work/life balance than NFL head coaching offers.

But, like I said at the top, you're right for the vast majority and the most likely outcome is that he doesn't retire this early.

McVeigh could walk away a very wealthy man right now . He’s got to be one of the highest paid coaches . As has been said I hope Donald retires . Without him we are talking about the world champion Bengals . Probably over the 9ers . He lives rent free in our QBs head and has for years and Russ isn’t the only one . You play that guy , that front 7 and you’re gonna get hit too much :x

I agree with all you say, Oly. Not enough money to cover normal living expenses typically brings pain but more money when you already have enough doesn't bring more happiness.

I can see McVey taking on a high school football coaching gig just to find an outlet his mentoring and competitive drives while allowing for time to be a good husband and father. I think Phillip Rivers did this and I believe Jake Locker is doing this, among other ex pros.

Whatever he decides, I think he realizes he doesn't want to fall into the Bill Belichick OCD 20 hr. work days mindset.

I dont see him retiring at 36 sorry. I think the Rams will have some holes to fill this year. Witt is gone, Weddle, Von Miller, and Donald could be as well. Moreover, what do you do with the cap on Cupp, OBJ, and Woods. I could see him cutting back but not retiring at this age. Sure, would I rather be a Rams fan right now that us yeah, but they are not on a glide path to get back to the SB in an easy squeezey lemon peasy fashion.

McVay is still very young, only 36 years old, so I could envision him doing something like what Dick Vermeil did, take 10 or 12 years off before returning to the game in his late 40's when most people start their head coaching careers.. The problem is that the game has been changing so much that it has the chance of making his style obsolete in that amount of time unless he stays engaged in some manner with the game.

I wouldn't blame Aaron Donald a bit if he retired. The game is so hard on those guys and the league just keeps asking for more, expanding the regular season, the playoffs, playing games overseas, etc. And they wonder why players fake it in the Pro Bowl, if they don't skip it entirely.

Fire or not, look at Madden. Walked away, never came back. Made zillions in TV with 1/8th of the stress and a lot of free time. Would make sense to me.

No MV is too committed, look at the circumstances, he lives in LA which is expensive, he makes almost half of Bilicheat and he is in the middle of contract negotiations. Sure IF they dont pony up for a big raise it could happen, but I just dont see the Ram owner not coming across with a massive raise TS.

Pro Bowl needs to be eliminated. IF I were Aaron Donald I would retire, but who knows, I think he goes for another year or two.

I think that most of us in here in this forum and judging by what I'm seeing on social media and other outlets, fans everywhere are disappointed with the quality of play in the Pro Bowl and want to see some major changes if not eliminate it all together. Personally, I'm for chit canning it.

Our division could look vastly different next season. If McVay and Donald both retire, the Rams would be very unlikely to repeat their success from this season. The Niners are likely to be parting ways with Jimmy G and hitching their wagon to Trey Lance, and there's trouble in the desert. And that doesn't even take into account what's going on around the rest of the conference, with Aaron Rodgers looking to move, Brady and Payton retiring. We'll see how our offseason goes, but it looks like the door will be open for a quick turnaround for us.

I've been so dismayed with the Hawks' own issues I haven't really appreciated how much our rivals are dealing with. Sure, if McVay and Donald return the Rams will be the prohibitive favorites in the division--and, frankly would probably be the favorites even if they both retire--but the division might not be as out-of-reach as I thought.

If Pete manages the off-season well, we absolutely can have a quick turnaround.

We have just under $37 Mil in cap space with 52 contracted players for '22. Cutting Wagner saves $16.5 mil, Carson $3 mil, Hyder $2 mil, Bellore $2 mil, Collier $1 mil. There are others as well like Gabe Jackson, Poona, Jason Myers but I think those are not likely. Although I can see then flipping Gabe Jackson for a late round pick if they really want to go with smaller, athletic guards. That potentially $60 mil to play with.

By comparison the 49ers have $3 mil in cap space with 37 contracted players (however, they save $25 mil when they cut or trade Jimmy G.), Cardinals have $2 mil with 52 contracted players (they can easily create $15 mil more) and the Rams are $10 mil OVER the cap with 48 contracted players. (They can easily create $16 mil more)

Don't screw this up Pete! I don't wanna see 10 journeymen signed to 1 yr/$6 mil contracts.

If we want to improve JS has to go heavy after quality players in FA.
No more of this garage sale stuff in hopes of finding a long lost Rembrandt.
But a Leopard doesn't change it's spots so I would be surprised if we didn't wait out the first week or more of FA.

Seattle played its best ball late . Resign our key guys first . As for Donald and McVeigh they held a joint press session to declare they are walking it back for another title . So much for that although I’ve heard Donald wants a new deal if so .

We agree on the Pro Bowl River. What do you think on AR going to SF? None of the talking heads on TV are pushing that. I think with Samuels, Kittle, a great defense, and a Running game, he would be moving back to the WC, and would be a major upgrade over JG.

Well, I don't think He'll retire, but understanding the stress and time on being a head coach....If I could make $20MM+ and not have to go thru the grind, I'd take the bucks.

The Niners seem to have committed to Trey Lance, so I don't think they'll enter the Aaron Rodgers sweepstakes. IMO Shannahan wants a running, mobile quarterback in the mold of a Mahomes, Allen, or Jackson to run his offense. They wouldn't have traded up for Lance only to part ways with him in such a short period of time. IMO Rodgers will end up in either Denver or New Orleans.

There were discussions before the 49ers moved up to get Lance that Shanahan wanted Jones and he was talked into taking Lance.
Shanahan's coaching and play calling has usually been based upon a QB not freelancing (pardon the pun) but rather running the plays
that Shanahan called and Mac Jones fit that to a tee. Now we see them with a QB who is athletically gifted, but really raw as he only
played a limited amount the last 2 years in College. They may add the QB option to their playbook, but QB mobility hasn't been much
of a staple of that Offense.
It may work out for them, but it may be that it will take a few years for Lance to develop and in the mean time all of the other players
will be getting older and beat up. What I mean is that it may take 3 years for Lance to get to the point of being a championship level
QB but by then the team will have a different makeup than the one that almost went to the SB this year.

Crazy stat I read today . Only 5 active qbs have won a super bowl . Flacco, Stafford , Mahomes , Foles and Russ. It’s not easy . Long way to the top .

You can say the same thing about Drew Brees and Dan Marino. Dan Fouts never got to a single one.

That’s what I mean . Marino with arguably the greatest coach ever . Only won a single conference championship . Fouts was unreal , hated facing him . They won the marathon to Miami and went down to the Bengals on a frigid day , worn down from the epic fight a week earlier . SF squeaked by the Bengals on a last second stop. Montana beat the Bengals in 88 too but as I’ve said he bounced the ball right off the chest of a safety one play before the winning TD.

It’s so hard to do . Russ says his goal is to win 3 or 4 more . It sounds a bit flippant in a way . I think it’s every teams goal but it’s really hard to do even once . The longer I live the more I believe luck is the biggest factor for teams good enough to take advantage of it. Rodgers should have been in his second super bowl in 2014. We saw what happened right down to the coin toss in overtime . Brees was going in 2019 until his receiver got blown up long before a pass could arrive with no call . Worst non call ever . Intentional imo . Even Sunday the one play everyone talked about with the defensive hold on 3rd and 8 wyman called “ textbook “ coverage should not have happened. The entire Rams line minus the center false started by half a second . I saw it at the time . Should have been 3rd and goal from the 13 . So it goes. If your aunt had balls she would be your uncle right ? :D I hope we get another before I die .

Brady set the bar so high and all these younger QBs think they will be the next Brady. So they want to say 3 or 4 because winning 1 or 2 just ain't enough to even come close to challenging for the best any more. Now you gotta win 7 just to match the best QB to ever do it. As we have all seen that is pretty much impossible, especially in this era of free agency and the salary cap. No one really knows how the one guy to swing 7 did it. It just sort of happened and now that's the bar for a QB coming in the league if they want to be the best ever.

Might as well not even bother trying to match Brady. Just focus on winning and doing what you know you need to do, then fate and luck will sort the rest out.
