Yea, I saw that. Here's some more details, with the caveat that it's one side of the story:

A Broward County sheriff's deputy responded to a report of a naked man walking near a school in Deerfield Beach, according to the report. After McDowell looked up at the deputy and yelled an expletive, "the defendant then charged at me with at full speed (sic) with closed fist," the report said.

The officer said that due to proximity he was unable to avoid the attack or to use de-escalation tactics or a nonlethal weapon.

"The defendant intentionally rammed his body into me and began swinging closed fist punches at me," the officer said, according to the report. "The punches were swung with extreme aggression with at least one strike hitting me on my right eye/temple area of my eye."

The officer said he was dazed and felt extreme pain where he was struck, and that the NFL player continued the "violent attack" by landing strikes to the top of his head.

McDowell then fled and after a foot pursuit, a Taser was deployed. McDowell was handcuffed and taken into custody, according to the report.

In addition to the aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and obstruction of justice with violence charges, McDowell is also charged with exposure "due to the defendant walking around the street naked exposing his sexual organs in view of the public -- to include a school that contained children."

Definitely a total mental breakdown . One can debate the wisdom of a man who suffered such a severe head injury to be in the trenches knocking heads every play . It’s a man gone utterly insane and it’s sad no matter the person or their history . Count his career over and it will take a great lawyer for him to avoid serious prison time .

Oh, I wasn't trying to defend him or his actions, I was just adding a disclaimer by noting that we haven't heard from McDowell yet. You're exactly right, there's absolutely no excuse for this kind of behavior. Regardless of any possible mental issues or other possible explanations, he needs to be locked up to protect the public.

That's an excellent point regarding the head injury and playing, one I was thinking about last night. Common sense tells you that's a really bad idea. The Hawk's doctors looked at him twice and did not pass him to play, as did Dallas. I had a customer several years ago that had a head injury on a motor cycle, he has never been the same. Subject to sudden acts of verbal and physical violence, and was a really mild mannered guy before that. Maybe he belongs in a medical facility.

If those are all true than strange indeed. Obviously, depending on what you were doing right before you left, one could have consumed something that would totally cause them to be F-ed up in a few minutes. The only thing that could, maybe save him is if there were some sort of blood work that showed he was somehow drugged- which I doubt. Maybe somebody slipped him a Mickey.

I'm no expert, but this sounds to me like PCP, or angel dust, which can cause severe hallucinations and some very bizarre behavior. If that's the case, it will show up in the toxicology report.

McDowell has had several run-ins with law enforcement, including a September 2017 DUI and a December 2017 allegation of disorderly conduct. In February 2019, he was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, resisting arrest, and assault. The league suspended him two games.

The police report indicates that McDowell remains on probation in Michigan, which will create a separate set of legal issues for McDowell.

Aren't all the run ins with the law following having his head smashed in an ATV accident ? Did the guy have a rap sheet when he was drafted? Whatever the cause this was a totally manic episode. None of the other charges really are anywhere near the level of this incident which is a man utterly insane in that moment.

I remember a few years back a KC linebacker killed his fiancée and then shot himself in the parking lot of arrowhead in front of the coaches. His family described him as the nicest guy in the world until a really bad concussion and he became a different person entirely. I hope McDowell gets the help he needs to manage whatever is wrong with him, it will likely happen in prison.

McDowell was drafted in April of 2017, so yes, the incidents noted happened after his ATV injury, but my point was that the fact that he has a record that included assault and resisting arrest makes it less likely that he was the victim of some sort of prank.

I remember the incident you referred to, and you're absolutely right, that a head injury could go a long ways in explaining his bizarre behavior. But regardless of the cause, he's currently a danger to himself and others and needs to be isolated from the rest of society until he's deemed as no longer a threat.
