Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on Aaron Rodgers

Postby RiverDog » Tue Nov 09, 2021 6:31 pm

I've followed and respected Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, NBA HOF'er and winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, for nearly 60 years and read a couple of his books, including his latest, "Coach Wooden and Me", a relatively short but excellent book if you are looking for a good, non fiction sports related novel. He wrote a very good piece on Aaron Rodgers that I wanted to share with you folks and felt it worthy of its own thread:

I do, too. I wasn't too keen on his lionization of Colin Kaepernick, but I agree that at least Kap is honest about his beliefs whereas Rodgers is a lying sack of $hit. In my book of disrespect, Rodgers has Kaepernick beat by 10 to 1.

Jabbar looked at a different angle, the perception of professional athletes as role models, something that I hadn't thought about.

Thanks, River. Powerful stuff from a legend. Damn, Kareem just resonates with logic - I sure hope some folks can listen.

I'm glad you guys liked the article. I've always liked Jabbar way back when he played at UCLA and was known at Lew Alcindor. Check out that book that I recommended in the OP.

Seeing Rodgers, Mr. Pew Pew double check, commit career suicide with his stupid behavior amuses me. I never cared for the guy. Just seems like a jackass who for some reason is an amazing QB. He's definitely not one of the greats in terms of personality like a Staubach or Montana. He's a diva QB who focuses on number one, himself.

With the stroke Rodgers has, the pocket presence, mobile enough he should have more than one SB appearance. But he's never been a leader. He shifts blame when something goes wrong, doesn't have that leadership team first mentality. He's gotten the best of Seattle every time they have played there so lets see how the cookie crumbles.

I agree with both of those statements. I was relatively neutral about Rodgers until recently. We only have the media to rely on the painting of a portrait of professional sports personalities. But his rant on the Pat McAfee show last week changed everything. He outright lied, not only when he answered "Yeah, I'm immunized" to a question about his vaccination status, but his absurd claim that an NFL doctor told him that vaccinated people can't catch or spread Covid simply doesn't pass the smell test, his claim that the current surge is not a pandemic of the unvaccinated is provably false, and his claim that he's allergic to both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines is simply unbelievable. He further enraged me by portraying himself as the victim of "the woke mob" trying to nail him into the "cancel culture coffin". Given the NFL protocols, he cannot possibly have expected to keep his vaccination status a secret once he tested positive and not anticipated at least some of the outrage when it became blatantly obvious that he was a lying sack of $hit. He wouldn't have lied about it had he thought there wouldn't be an adverse reaction.

I have to give Rodgers a little bit of credit for acknowledging that he misled people about his vaccination status and he made some sympatric remarks about those that have been adversely affected by Covid. But he didn't apologize or express even the slightest remorse for misleading others, some of whom might have behaved differently around him had they not assumed he was vaccinated. He went on to say that he stands behind everything he said about the disease, which only reaffirms his own stupidity and what an off the wall moonbat he really is.

He calls himself a "Critical Thinker".
I get the feeling he doesn't know what that really means.
To me he comes across as a spoiled brat who got caught with his hand in the cookie jar and is now lying about whether there were cookies in it.

Yeah, the lack of the ability to process information is what is most surprising revelation about Rodgers. Here you have a man that is a college graduate from a well respected university that has mastered the most intellectually challenging position on the field and done it to HOF standards making these outlandish claims, like a doctor told him a vaccinated person can't catch Covid or that it's not a pandemic of the unvaccinated, then expressing shock and outrage because people are calling him out on it. It's bizarre.

I thought that former WSU HC Nick Rolovich was selfish, but at least he didn't lie or fabricate stories to justify his hesitancy. Or maybe Rolo was just smart enough to keep his mouth shut.

I’ve never liked Rogers; he’s a selfish and spoiled whiner. Like Big Ben, he limps and winces to get a flag drawn. He also loves to catch that 325 pound D lineman with his toe on the playing field for another. He has been my favorite character to “sports hate” since Jim Harbaugh left the Niners.

His critical thinking on this subject was anything but! It was all surface-level tinfoil hat regurgitated BS. He doesn’t even get any style points for being original or clever…. on any level. During his 45 minute excuse making tour, he came across as a smug, entitled blamer who, quite frankly, doesn’t seem all that bright (& not just because I disagree with him). He remains a petulant asshat to me. What’s new is that we all now know he is a selfish liar, and not quite the intellectual he believes himself to be.

Hey, Sis! Glad you liked the article. All's well on my home front.

Interesting that all of the regular posters are on the same page with regards to the vaccine. That kind of agreement doesn't happen often.
