OBJ Released

The Seahawks might be interested.
We do have the Cap space and he's now a FA.

I honestly think we're good at receiver, but it wouldn't shock me if Pete were interested.

I could see a problem with OBJ being on the field at the same time as Metcalf. There can only be one football on the field at a time.

But seriously, as Cbob noted, we do not have a need at WR and even if we did, we're not in a position to make a push for the Super Bowl. Plus the reason OBJ was unhappy in Cleveland is that he's playing in a run first offense. Unless Pete is successful in changing the color of his stripes, we're not likely to have an offense that will keep this diva happy.

Pete and shiny bauble syndrome. As well it might placate Wilson a little.
But I would think he would want to go to a team that had a better chance of winning.

That's the other thing. OBJ might not be content to play for a team that's in a rebuild mode.

IMO he'll end up with a team like the Raiders that have a pass happy offense and are in the hunt. The Raiders just lost one of their receivers in a DUI incident and they'd welcome a change of focus after the Gruden firing.

He's also almost 30 now, not quite the hotshot he used to be. Whether he sees it that way in his mind is another thing. It would be an interesting lineup though.

Just say no. He’s a prima Donna queen with a drama addiction . He’s not real durable . His dad is truly an idiot whose behavior helps explain his sons behavior . Besides we have enough receivers . 2 pro bowl guys including 2 of the best at their position in the league . Swain has shown he can play . We have more tight ends than we use . Beckham actually leads the browns in passing yardage despite missing 2 games. He’s the third option here at best . Nobody’s benching DK or Lock .
No and hell no

The raiders should sell out to get him even as a 1 year rental . They are 5-2 with a real chance to win the west but their leading receiver is gone in a horrific fashion. I see it as the best fit .

I agree but ESPN is saying Seattle is the best landing spot. The best for him is New England.

We're not going anywhere this year, so why not add someone who could help the Offense even a little?
He might help DK or Tyler get man to man coverage more often so it could add some more excitement.
Apparently he goes on waivers on Monday morning. It will be interesting to see if one of the bottom
10 teams or thereabouts before us takes a chance and claims him.

OBJ has expressed the most interest in joining the Raiders. Personally, I hope he doesn't wind up in Seattle. We don't need another diva on the team competing with Metcalf.

OBJ has always been a choir boy, so he deserves to be in Las Vegas. I heard they need a new 'deep threat' wide receiver. The Raider's now former, but was current one is going away for a long long time. 156mph on a city street, surrounded by residential sub divisions. Brilliant. I wonder if his pants were down when they found him.

The Raiders are the team that makes the most sense, but supposedly they're eyeballing DeShawn Jackson to replace Ruggs. They're way down the waiver list so perhaps they think he'll be gone anyway.

It's hard to tell if we have a genuine interest in signing Beckham or if we're just making some noise as a pacifier to placate Russell in an effort to get him to stick around another couple of years. We don't have a need for another WR so bringing him in doesn't make a lot of sense given the multiple holes that need filling.

Given the teams ahead of us in the waiver order, we should get a shot at him if we truly want him so it will be interesting to see if we pick him up. The waiver process starts tomorrow at 1pm PT.

The guy is a cancer with a capital C. Just quotes from teammates some of who support him and some who call him a malcontent is the classic example of a divisive diva.

We already have our drama queen and he’s twice the threat as OBJ. Double down . And look how Cleveland who the pundits had dead and buried and the Qb Beckham couldn’t stand performed without him yesterday . No !!!!!!!

Wherever he signs I think he will try to use it as a stepping stone for a better contract.
Given that PoV, he would probably want to go to a team with the best QB and Russ is one of the best deep ball throwers in the game.
It would also mean he would behave himself wherever he lands, at least for this year.

Russ has made clear he wants him and really the deep ball has become Russes preferred game period . TD or punt . I just look at the 2 most high profile receivers brought in as free agents to help Russ . Nether Harvin or Graham really panned out . It’s mid season in possibly a lost season but we just had our most productive efficient offensive performance since probably week one with our backup qb. Our star receivers went off . I really like how we’re playing right now . Why upset the apple cart ?

Well, Antonio Brown certainly didn't behave for 8-9 games when he went to the Raiders.

One of the things that I would worry about would be OBJ's interaction with his new teammates. If OBJ is to be involved in our offense, it's going to come at the expense of one of our current receivers, most likely Metcalf. How is DK going to react when he sees snaps and targets going to OBJ? Things might turn out just fine, but there's a possibility that it could prove disastrous. You could be putting two roosters in the same henhouse.

I agree . You have personally pointed out Metcalfs flaws personality wise but he’s rapidly becoming the cock of the walk drawing every teams best defender in coverage and still winning . I’m not chancing upsetting DK bringing him in but let’s see. Free agents are eye candy for JS and PC

It may open up opportunities for DK and Lockett as the Defenses couldn't double all 3 WR's.
If you look at OBJ's history, it's taken a couple of years before he wears out his welcome. 8 or 9 games is well within that limit.

Can you explain waiver wire 101? So any of those teams ahead of Seattle can sign OBJ when it's their turn on the wire? He supposedly will not play for a non-contender, and all of those 8 teams ahead of Seattle are crap. Not sure we are much better, though!

For the record, I want OBJ to sign with Seattle. Russell wants him, and let's see what happens. Can't get any worse.

A team would have to have the Cap space to assume OBJ's salary and any bonus money his contract stipulates.
So it's half of his base yearly salary + bonus.
The waiver claim process starts with the team with the worst record and goes up from there.

If he goes unclaimed then he can sign with any team he wants to and gets a new contract.

I'm not an expert and would appreciate others jumping in to correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that the way it works is that once a player is released, any team can sign him for the rest of the season without having to re-negotiate a new contract, but that team still has to honor the terms of the existing contract. The waiver order is the inverse of the league standings when the player was released, so at 3-5, we have a better record than 8 teams, including the Jags, Dolphins, Jets, Eagles, Texans, Lions, WFT, and the Giants, and a worse record than 23 teams, so we'd pick 9th if Beckham isn't claimed by any of the teams ahead of us.

Does that sound right, North Hawk?

I'm not North but I can tell you it's correct except for the "for he rest of the season" part; it's for the rest of he contract. When you claim a player off of waivers you're assuming his contract. If he clears waivers he's a FA and a new contract is in order.

Think of the marketing possibilities of our receiving corps if we claim OBJ: Beckham, Lockett, and Metcalf. BLM.

"You'll have to wait and see how this all goes," Carroll told reporters before a jumble of words that avoided answering directly whether or not the Seahawks would put in a claim. ... "So I didn't say yes, or I didn't say no. That's just 'cause — you'll see."

Postby Agent 86 » Tue Nov 09, 2021 9:44 am

One of the reasons why the Browns released OBJ was because they called him a "freelancer", Mayfield never trusted he would run the route he was supposed to run and he would often improvise.

With the way the Hawks offense likes to operate, probably not so much a problem if there was a little freelancing in there. The obvious worry is the attitude and how that would effect the team, but as North said, for 8-9 games I personally would like to see it. I have read OBJ prefers not to be claimed so he becomes an outright free agent and gets to choose where he goes, but I don't think all 31 teams will pass on putting a claim in for him. And looking at the 8 teams ahead of us, good chance the Hawks get him if they do in fact put a claim in.

Boy, I'm really surprised that someone didn't claim him. But he's been making noise that he'd be unhappy if a team that he didn't feel was a contender picked him up, so that might have scared a team or two off.

Some folks are making a case for the Saints, a contender that doesn't have a #1 receiver and of which is Beckham's home town. But they also don't have a star quarterback.

Hopefully we steer clear of this guy.

I’m surprised that if the Seahawks were actually interested in him they didn’t pick
him up for the rest of the season. It would only cost $7.5 M and we have about $12.5M
in Cap space. His contract ended after this year so that would have been the only expense.
They would have had 8 games to see if he would be a good fit here. So now if they do
sign him it will be to a multi year contract with all of the Cap implications in future years.

Yea, and as Cbob had indicated, Pete was being pretty cryptic when asked about OBJ, so although I didn't expect us to take him, I wouldn't have been surprised if we did.

I have to wonder if OBJ's comments might have soured a team or two from taking him. We talked about him being a good fit for the Raiders, but with all the trouble they've had, do they really want to bring in someone with the red flags that OBJ brings with him? There's also the chance that OBJ is not as good of a talent as everyone is talking him up to be. Maybe the reason why he's not getting the ball is because he's no longer talented enough or working hard enough to get open. After all, he's only has 17 receptions for 232 yards in 6 games.

We'll see what happens to him in free agency. With Metcalf's contract coming up in two years, I can't see us making a run at him.

According to PFT, the Packers have offered him the veteran minimum salary for this year.
It remains to be seen if he wants to go to a contender with a great QB more than money.
