Eskridge to PUP list

Postby Hawktawk » Fri Jul 30, 2021 12:12 pm

Here we go again with another high draft pick considered a reach by many and now its more damaged goods. Its getting to be a broken record with our top picks.

Well, we'll see. Carroll talks like it's short term, but certainly we're snake bit. 5th consecutive top pick that get's hurt before or at start of camp.

Yea, I saw that. He was also held back during offseason workouts due to a toe injury. Not sure if that's the same issue that's holding him back now, but when you consider that he missed mini camp, too, he's missing valuable reps with our QB's. They had him penciled in as the #3 receiver.

Pocic is sitting out with a hamstring injury, too.

You draft wide thick bodies usually you’re OK, you draft slender skinny builds you get injuries. So to steal a line from the movie I robot, the words I told you guys so, just doesn’t quite adequately describe how I feel right now.

Pocic would qualify as a thick wide body, and he's not on the practice field, either.

I don't know if there's any relationship between body type and injuries. You have to keep in mind that big bodies put more stress on their joints, their backs, etc. Do you remember how injury prone Russell Okung was? Or how about Marcus Tubbs, our first round pick in 2004?

Yeah okay, you win! Tubbs, I wanted Igor Olshanky, not that he lasted that long, but at least we would have been able to yell Kill Igor Kill! Its just that it was a position we didnt really need Riv. This draft was a bust because we didnt have enough picks to begin with. Drafts are like shotguns anyway, your rifleman like Walsh, Jimmy Johnson, etc are rare.

Sounds like Eskridge might have 'turf toe' which might be troubling as if it's bad it could bother him all year and maybe even shorten his career.
If so, it wouldn't surprise me to see him get surgery and be out for most or all of the year (if it's bad enough).

I am trying to refrain from the curse word, but holy Sh###t! From Your Supervisor McDowell, to Penny, if to Taylor, now Esk. Trying to be hopeful still. It’s not like these injuries or crazy incidents can be predicted. Hopefully it’s not like Dorsett from last year. Esk will be perfect for Waldron’s offense and I just hope he is able to rock soonish.

I'm not sure this is such a tragic loss. The two main starting spots are taken and Russell already has very good timing with 2 other receivers - Hart and Swain and both are probably a long way ahead of any rookie receiver not named DK. Even if he were in camp, he'd still be the #4 to 5 coming out this year. This doesn't include a great TE group with FA Everett and Dissley, yes, only if he can stay healthy.

On the other side of the coin, last years #2 pick Darrell Taylor who was hurt all last year, is in camp and it's reported he looks real good moving to his new strong side position that would be the hybrid DE/3rd LB with Wags and Brooks going forward. Penny is healthy and lost weight and looks great, according to media. I think Posic was back on the field today, too. We actually seem to be pretty healthy right now. This is football!

That's certainly the glass half full take.

The glass half empty look is that the type of injury, a big toe, doesn't heal quickly and especially for a receiver, is critical to their play. Eskridge was also being counted on to return punts and/or kickoffs, too. He's the highest of the few draft choices we had last season. If he's not ready to go when the whistle blows in September, it's going to be a significant setback.

I see where Pete has not placed a timeline on his return but that they hope to get him back "in a week or so".

It must be fairly serious if he missed the OTA's because of it and now 2 or 3 months later he's still healing. His college season ended in January, so it's now 6 months on.
Toe injuries have ended careers so I hope it's not the case here.

Yup. It ended Jack Lambert's career. I remember thinking how one of the toughest men ever to play the game got forced into an early retirement due to what at the time sounded like such a wimpy injury. Now I know better.

Penney is the most enigmatic guy on your list. I've seen that man do things that make me drool at the mouth, the sudden explosion to the second level. He was going off the last 2 games before his late 2019 injury. MOF I think he got hurt on about a 20 yard gain. He has home run potential every time he touches the ball.Is he another Procise? we will see.

I don't try to predict injuries, even when it's obvious some players do seem far more prone to it. It's just part of the game and you have no choice but to hope for the best.

Now he’s being fitted for special shoes . This is not looking good . Sounds like we got an undersized receiver who has lost his speed for now .

His speed or lack thereof isn't what worries me. It's his ability to make sharp cuts and sudden stops that's most concerning about this particular injury. But I agree with you that it doesn't look good. If it hasn't healed in the several months since OTA's, the prognosis for him being ready in another couple of weeks isn't favorable.

His speed is all he has, haven't seen enough film to say on his catching ability buy he's a small burner. If you have a big toe problem you can't do anything include run in a straight line. Hes useless. If he was 6'3" maybe but he's a undersized boat anchor

Well, we all should find out soon enough as he's no longer on PUP and is on the field today practicing with the team. Do not expect him to play this game and maybe not at all in the preseason, but he's back and according to Pete (yes we all know what that means) he looks fast and great running around.

Yeah, we all know to roll our eyes on que when Pete says that a player looks great.

We might see Eskridge returning punts during the preseason with the instruction not to hesitate to call for fair catches just to get his feet wet.

This is starting to look like a very severe concussion . No timetable for his return from concussion 6 weeks later . He flashed Harvin style swerve and speed but I knew he was going to be concussed when I saw the play . This is as bad a concussion as I remember since Malik McDowell.
