OTA's

Postby NorthHawk » Mon May 24, 2021 9:27 am

So the OTA's are beginning this week.
I hope all of the Offense shows up to get up to speed on the concepts and direction the new OC is implementing.
As well, the OL needs to get familiar with their new roles and responsibilities as well as Lewis moving to LG and Shell and Pocic
getting to know Gabe Jackson and how he sees the game.

Don't count on it:

By this time next year we will all know exactly how important the OTA's are. About 1/2 the teams have 90% or more participation and then there's the other half, like the Seahawks where the Vets have zero participation. Anyone want to bet if Russell and the others come to the 'mandatory' OTA's ahead of training camp?

I hope the vets all show up for OTA’s. The Offense has to get into a rhythm with the new OC and his way
or doing things. They will get some of that from video conferences, but it’s not the same as seeing body
language and sense of urgency. Pete talked about Waldron and tempo in one of his press conferences so
maybe a sense of urgency many of us have wanted will be on the menu before the last 2 minutes of the
1sr half and 4th quarter.

Looks like the question of Russell coming (and if he comes, so will everyone else... or so it should go that way) is now moot.

There was no doubt, now Aaron Rogers, that's a different drill. But as you guys would say, not our monkeys, not our circus!

Here's some information from ever bubbly Pete, including the facts that all the coaches have been 'shot' and we're almost at 70% as a team and seem to have the veterans pushing the others to get up to the NFL minimums to move forward as a team.

Injury report seems to be about as good as we could hope for. Looks like we're going into training camp in far better shape then the last 2 years.
I forgot we signed Aldon Smith, and reading between the lines, either he's really just not ready or he hasn't been cleared by the NFL to join the team.

Six weeks or so of nothing from the team and players. Let's hope camp starts off like the OTA's ended.

I also forgot about us signing Robert Nkemdiche (sp). If his head is now on straight, he might be able to fill the Jarran Reed role.
He had a lot of promise coming out of college (although I thought he was overdrafted and was maybe a solid 2nd rounder) so maybe he
can live up to his original draft slot or at least be a consistent contributor.

It's interesting that Florio is still characterizing Wilson as a "disgruntled quarterback." That's in stark contrast to Pete and Russell's rehearsed love in that we were treated to a few days ago. It won't take long before we know which viewpoint is closest to the mark.

They (PC/RW) know that the focus on this year would be largely disrupted without a show
of solidarity and neither wants to answer continued questions about problems.
It’s a good move by both men even if it stretched the reality of the situation or not.

The problem is that it's hard to imagine either man being completely genuine in their comments. Both are well known for their optimistic and politically correct behavior. It has the appearance of being a calculated, tactical statement meant to quiet the natives and keep everyone on the reservation.

True and the Seattle media for the most part buys into this stuff.
It would be a lot harder if this was happening in NY.

While I am sure both men are image conscious and aware of how important optics are, whether to a team or a 'personal brand' (which I see as a real consideration), I don't consider either to as disingenuous as some here seem to. Both are also just naturally positive and upbeat individuals.

It's not that I believe that they're disingenuous, it's that they have very little credibility when they go through their very frequent spells of over exaggerated exuberance. I think that they both feel they're being frank and truthful. On so many occasions, Pete's like a 5 year old kid on a sugar high. Do any of you remember, like I do, the "We're going to build around Tavaris!!!" post game interview following a win late in a very mediocre, non playoff season? Do you remember how many more games TJ started for us after Pete made that statement? I want to say 5.

Russell has always been very conscious of the image he projects to the public. I remember the story about when he was in college and didn't have a decent shirt to do a post game interview in, so he borrowed one from a teammate. It's an admirable trait in many respects but it tends to put a slant on everything he says and does when he's out there acting like (and I'm dating myself here) Eddie Haskell in "Leave it to Beaver" did when he was around Ward and June Cleaver. It doesn't make Russell a liar, but it does make him a bit of a phony, a Goodie Two Shoes.

Bottom line is that you can't use either one of those two's public statements as an accurate reflection of their true sentiments. They're always and very predictably going to paint a smiley face on the darkest of storm clouds.

Agreed Bob, but Pete's body language suggests he didn't know what was coming and was not necessarily happy about it and that means *(to me) JS grabbed Russell, who was in the building, and convinced him to crash the press conference for the good of the team.

I say this as once I saw JS's head shot (not exactly an 'executive' look Mr Schneider) it was easy to know Russell's crashing it was contrived. However, Russell does look happy, certainly no Marshawn Lynch attitude, so maybe all is good. We should know a lot more during training camp.

IMO it's going to take longer than training camp before we find out whether or not all is good. Training camps don't usually generate a lot of controversy. We'll likely need to wait until the first few weeks of the regular season. Unlike last year, we have a relatively tough first part of the season, with 5 of our first 7 games coming against 2020 playoff teams. We'll see just how much unity and harmony exists if we happen to start out a little slow.

I think we will see how things really are when the Offense hits a bad streak. If Pete butts in and clamps down then I think it will go off the tracks
pretty quickly, but if he lets the Offense work its way out of the problems then there will be hope.
