Hawks Sign Aldon Smith

Postby mykc14 » Thu Apr 15, 2021 12:37 pm

I know the Hawks were interested in trading for him last year. He started off hot, but then cooled off as the season wore on. 5 sacks and 50 pressures. Should be a nice compliment to what we already have and insurance if Taylor either can't go or struggles after not playing football for 2 years. If Taylor can be an impact player the Hawks might have a solid pass rush that won't require them to blitz so much. They will need it too because their starting Corner situation isn't ideal, although Reed looked pretty good down the stretch last year.

I saw earlier where signing Smith was a possibility. He had a real rocky start to his career, mostly off field stuff, but seems to have put that behind him. He's a talented athlete and could make a significant contribution. I like the signing.

Promise River? Hee hee Seriously I agree, at this point a B player is an upgrade and he is a B+ at best and a B- at worst.

He’s probably a rotational or spot player now, but he does have some suddenness off the Edge. Maybe they see him in the
Bruce Irvin role.

That's my take, too. Smith is not an every down starter. Assuming that he makes the roster, he'll be a situational player. Still a solid signing, though.

Not fond of this on the surface of it.

First I thought we were supposed to be steering clear of DV? Didn't Pet tell us that was an absolute? Now I recognize that rehab can happen and maybe he's one of the very few that actually changed instead of just stopped being stupid about it, I'd have do see evidence of it (which may already exist, I've not had reason to check it out till now).

Second, other than against us he was very pedestrian last year and faded as the year went on. Maybe he's shaken off the rust now and will find a little bit of the player he once was but that's the second major maybe just off the top of my head for a marginal player.

We didn't have the Cap space to get a real good player, so now we are bottom feeding and hoping for the best.
I thought all of his problems stemmed from alcoholism and if he has a handle on that then he might be able to help in spot duty off the edge.
Maybe even play a few full games if necessary, but I hear you about not being the player he once was.

I don’t think anybody here is hoping he will start for us, but as a rotational player he can definitely help. We used to have our NASCAR pass rush package and it looks like we might get back to that again. Although he might not start over Mayowa Smith is probably better than him. Smith had 19 sacks + QB hits last season- Dunlap had 22. Mayowa had 17. I imagine Smiths contract is low risk with very little guaranteed. Unless it comes out we are paying him more than a couple million I don’t see the downside.

Yeah I actually didn’t remember that he was charged with DV until you posted this. I do remember PC saying something along those lines a few years ago. We were willing to draft Clark a few years ago even though many other teams were not. I know there was more to it than a simple DV situation, but the incident was bad. It seems like we are just like every other team- we will absolutely never sign a player convicted of DV... unless that player is somebody we really want.

Sounds like Smith had alcohol issues along with his DV and a hit and run. It's been a couple of years since the last even occurred. Hopefully this stuff is behind him. I didn't much keep up on this guy. I remember him being a nightmare in San Francisco against us. I guess he is cheap and available because he has fallen so far in his life. Hopefully he stays clean and can find a quality end to his career here.

I'm with you. I'm maybe higher on his on-field potential, but while he might be sober I don't think alcohol dependence alone leads to DV. It certainly exacerbates it (it did with my stepdad), but from my experience and working with a DV survivor shelter, I just don't think that an abuser changes their stripes from getting sober.

You might be right, but I would thing the NFL would demand he also get anger management training and learn better ways to
express himself in any domestic situation. It works for some people, maybe he's one of them. I hope so for his and his partners sake.

Here is a list of his known problems. Sounds like his problems mainly stem from alcoholism. One of those situations where he's a completely different person on and off the alcohol. Hopefully he has the habit kicked. I like a good comeback and recovery story. If not, we'll find out quickly. Pete likes to redeem problem people, but he won't give them a long rope.

Well, if this is true, it's probably the end of his career in Seattle at least.

Pff...the Hawks are lax in the character department. This is a negative against their executive team and needs to be fixed.

LOL

Looks like the Seahawks are adding to their San Quentin exercise yard cast of characters

This isn't the 70's with the Raiders any longer
