Another Kirk Gibson?

Last night's Ravens-Browns game was a classic, and involved an incident that reminded me of the 1988 World Series when a severely injured Kirk Gibson came off the bench to pinch hit with one on and two out in the bottom of the ninth and hit a walk-off home run when after the Ravens backup quarterback went down with an injury, a hobbled Lamar Jackson came dashing back onto the field and completed a critical 4th down pass for a first down.

Did anyone else have the same flashback?

I'm pretty sure it was the Chamberlain / Jerry West era Lakers, too. So mid/late 60's... yeah -- barely a teenager in Seattle.

I remember the Willis Reed game, probably around 1967 or so. I believe I was in jr. high. You're really dusting off the cob webs. In any event, Jackson was probably coming in for the next series anyway so it's not like he jumped out of a hospital bed, but it did come at a critical juncture of the game.

We have a couple of Saturday games on the pallet this week. Next week, we'll have 4 consecutive days of NFL football, Friday (Christmas day) through Monday, which has to be a first. That is, unless the virus rears its ugly head.

I don't see many parallels to Gibson. Jackson just had cramps so some fluids pretty much cured his issues.
If he was still cramping and hobbled to the end zone, then maybe, but he looked pretty loose when running.

The browns have a legitimate reason to feel good about their effort as they scored over 40 points against a team with a very good defense. The browns have a legitimate reason to kick themselves in that they scored over 40 points and lost the game. Anytime you score over 40 points you should expect to win. Anytime you give up over 40 points you should expect to lose.

What I NEVER understood about that game River, is why pitch to the one guy who could hurt you???!!!???

There were two outs in the bottom of the 9th with a man on first. Walking Gibson would have put the tying run into scoring position and the winning run on base. Especially as hobbled as Gibson was, he could have hit an apparent single to right field or even center field and gotten thrown out at first. There wasn't too many ways he could have hurt them. The odds dictated pitching to him.

Rollie Fingers was one of the best relievers in the game at that point. If I remember, he hadn't given up a game-losing homerun that year, up to that fateful point.

Rollie Fingers? You're about a decade behind. It was Dennis Eckersley, but you're right, he was regarded as one of the best relivers.
