Time to bring back Quinn

Your weekly reminder as to why the Seahawks should consider replacing Ken Norton as defensive coordinator. As DC in Oakland, his defenses were 22nd in total defense in 2015, 26th in 2016 and 23rd in 2017. In his first year as DC in Seattle in 2018, the defense went from 11th in 2017 to 16th. In 2019 it was 26th, and this year it’s 32nd and last. It can’t always be about personnel, can it?

I tend to agree with this too. I liked Norton as a positional coach, but he hasn't been good as a DC. He hasn't had the personnel here that Quinn had, but being in the bottom half of the league isn't acceptable for a defensive minded HC and coaching staff. I would also put some blame on PC and JS for having such a weak DL for the past two years. I also think maybe the league has figured out the Pete's system a little bit. Quinn's D in Atlanta has been bad, the Hawks have struggled. At the end of the day our D needs to improve if we want to make the most out of RW3's prime years.

mykc14 hit the nail on this one with the comment that Norton doesn't have the same talent to work with.
It's not even close in that regard. However, I always like adding former Head Coaches to the staff. It seems
to me they arrive with a better understanding of the whole picture and players often respond to them better than
former positional coaches. At least for a short while.

If we're going to discuss coaches, I think the Secondary really misses a great secondary coach like Kris Richard.
He seemed to really understand Pete's Defense and howto get the players to play well within it.
In Dallas, they are using a different scheme, and it doesn't seem to be working very well.

It would be highly unusual to bring in a new coach to a team that's 5-0, especially in that I would assume he'd lose his $$$$ that Atlanta is stuck paying him to the end of his contract. However, "Assistant Head Coach Defense" would be a nice title to give him, should they be considering it.

My opinion: Correct to go offer who ever has Kris Richard as a coach a draft pick to get him back as the D-Backs coach. He was the man with the LOB. If I really remember didn't we have our doubts about Quinn at times, too or was Bevel our only target?

I would like Quinn back for his defensive line expertise. We are really missing a guy who can build and develop a D-line.

It's also highly unusual for a 5-0 team to have the 32nd ranked defense in the league. And there is no salary cap on coaching staffs.

I think we'd be foolish to expect immediate results if we were to demote/fire Norton and bring back Quinn as DC this season. First off, I'm not sure how much such a move would help a locker room of which is 5-0 and only a handful remember Quinn (KJ, Wags, and Russ). Norton undoubtedly has some strong supporters on the defensive side of the ball and letting him go when we are undefeated has the potential of demoralizing the team.

Secondly, there's no way that Quinn will be able to waive a magic wand and suddenly create a pass rush where none existed before. He certainly wasn't able to pull a rabbit out of the hat in Atlanta. As others have stated, there's a huge talent gap between what Norton has to work with and what Quinn was blessed with during the LOB era.

This is a move that we should consider in the offseason, assuming that Quinn doesn't land another HC job.

I agree River, not much we can do midseason. I am sad, I thought Norton would be better.
