SAD AF.... Yes, it’s off topic and I don’t need a lecture

Postby Hawk Sista » Thu May 07, 2020 1:32 am

I lost one of my dearest friends today to COVID. He was big, strong, healthy, and about 3 months shy of his 50th birthday. Post mortem descriptions of people are most oft exaggerated. But this guy, he was special in ways too numerous to count. Superficially, he was funny. The fill the room kind of funny. I’ve been described as the life of the party, but I happily let him take that lead.... not that I had a choice with his big and beautiful personality. More importantly- he was as generous as a person could be. He flew from Brooklyn to California to celebrate my last cancer treatment and brought me my first bottle of scotch...a McCallan 18. I was a novice and had no idea that my first scotch was a very fine one. The $300 dollar bottle of hootch wasn’t even the generous part. it was the time, love, energy and effort to celebrate my life.

His name is Lloyd Cornelius Porter...his close people (& he has many) called him Corn. He was the unofficial mayor of the Bed-Stuy neighborhood in Brooklyn because he lifted up so many people. He was a fierce advocate for local and small businesses and neighborhoods coming together 1950s style. He gave, gave, gave and built community in myriad ways.

To make this a little less off topic & relevant to sports/football, I’ll share some of his many commercials (I’ll bet you have seen some). He was beautiful and I am heartbroken.

I know I haven’t been around much, but I loves ya and wanted to share.

Wow, how sad. My heart goes out to you and his other friends and family. Only the good die young. I'm sure that the rest of the gang doesn't mind you sharing something this deeply personal with the rest of us. We're a tight knit bunch and have come to know each other as family. No one's going to lecture you, least of all me.

Hopefully you and everyone else are staying safe. My brother texted me yesterday, said he was making a 350 mile trip across the state, Bellingham to Walla Walla, this Friday to show his new girlfriend our home town and wanted to stop by our place in the Tri Cities and I had to tell him no. My wife has two auto immune diseases and we're both 65 years old. Not sure what the hell there is to do there anyway as like everywhere else, all the restaurants, bars, and museums are shut down.

Stay safe, everyone!

Sorry for your loss, Sis.
That a person would fly all across the country with an expensive bottle to celebrate your health success
says a lot about the depth of your relationship and the character of the man. I'm sure he'll be missed
terribly by all who knew him.

Take care everybody and follow the recommendations of the health experts in protecting yourself from
this scourge that is wending its way throughout the world.

My condolences HS, what a tough loss. He sounds like he was a wonderful man. To fly out across country to see you after your final treatment, that says everything you need to know about him.

Sad to hear it. My condolences. This COVID is all over the place. That what makes it so terrible. You can have 999 people walk around showing no or mild symptoms, then boom it hammers someone unexpected.
