Contingency Plan for NFL Season

The NFL has put together a contingency plan for a schedule that has a regular season starting in mid-October, a season with no bye weeks and a Feb. 28 Super Bowl, according to the Sports Business Journal's John Ourand and Ben Fischer.

The official schedule is expected to be released next month. The contingency plan would depend on how much the coronavirus pandemic is under control. Scheduling plans have not been finalized yet.

Government officials like California Gov. Gavin Newsom have said that the coronavirus could halt plans for sporting events and concerts through 2021. On April 14, he said, "large-scale events that bring in hundreds, thousands, tens-of-thousands of strangers all together across every conceivable difference, health and otherwise is not in the cards based on our current guidelines and current expectations."

It is interesting to me how the governors of different states are approaching the recovery from the COVID-19 shutdown from opposite extremes. The governors of WA, CA and MI, for example, want to keep everything shutdown tight for he foreseeable future whereas those of GA and AR, for example are pushing to get back to business as usual.

I'm not sure if you want to call it "locked down tight" as here in WA they have relaxed some restrictions, such as on elective surgeries and construction activities, but I get your point. CA, OR, and WA are supposedly going to be acting in concert with one another, so if CA bans outdoor gatherings of 250+ through the fall like I suspect they will, WA will likely follow suit.

But even if WA doesn't go along with CA if they decide to ban large gatherings, CA still has 3 NFL franchises in the state, making it virtually impossible for the league to work around, so such a decision would likely derail any plans the NFL might have of conducting a somewhat business as usual season.

Even if they play in empty stadiums, some states may require the league to come up with a rigorous testing program before they'll allow football games to be played, and if they have a positive test, it could mean canceling games.
