Cool. No one can say the defense carried him this year. If not for Russell, we wouldn't have made the playoffs.

That is pretty cool, well deserved. I like that they have a metric connected to their MVP pick. On another note, did anybody read the link? Is the last paragraph a knock on the Hawks Offensive philosophy/coaching?

Sure seems like one could infer that the guy is claiming the Hawks offense isn't built around RW's strengths. Another implication sort of centers on what many of us have complained about for a long time regrading PC's offensive philosophy: Very little risk/innovation in the first half of games which leads to the need for a furious 4th quarter comeback...

I think it's more like they stumble around until they are down by 2 or more scores and Wilson has to bail them out.

I think it's partly that and partly just an observation. It's no secret that we're a run first offense, while he's saying that that makes it tougher on Russ to amass sparkling stats he's also definitely implying that Russ could use a little help scheme wise.

I agree with that. One of the problems inherent with a run first offense is that all it takes is a penalty or a sack and we're playing from behind the sticks, which mutes the running threat. A run first offense isn't designed to dig out of a 1st and 15 hole to the same degree that a passing offense is. In other words, it makes it more difficult to for a QB to accumulate individual statistics in a run first offense....as if that were the objective of the offense. It does make Russell's statistical accomplishments more impressive as he's achieved it while playing in our offense.

This wins above replacement thing is an excellent concept. And Wilson is just one of those HOF trajectory never say die guys that indeed wins a lot of games on his own. He not only wins when his team plays bad but wins when he plays bad sometimes. His little QBR swoon for 4 or 5 games later in the season cost him the award almost certainly but hes my mvp. Contrast the brutal performance by Jackson at home in the divisional with 4 or 5 turnovers and a stupid personal foul penalty with Russ in the divisional. He's down 21-3 in Lambeau in the second half, no protection, no running game (but they kept trying)4 healthy receivers etc and he was a drop by Malik Turner and a decision to punt on 4th and 11 near midfield by Carroll from maybe coming all the way back. To be fair the run worked a lot better when Carson was healthy and was borderline scary when Penney got rolling but once they were out it was time to retool. Homer and Lynch were a nice story in a broken season but It was time to give Russ the ball like Knox did for Krieg in 84 when Warner went down.

Which leads to the question of whether this article takes a dig at PC and of course it does as it should. His philosophy of run first all the time is what it is. From a win percentage it's hard to argue the results but again, look at our QBs WAR value. I think it was 2017, the year they missed the playoffs with a 9-7 record. Russ threw for 4K plus, 34 TDs, a team record and best in the league that year, rushed for around 600 yards which led the team in rushing, accounted for all but one TD for the team the entire season. I believe he threw 15 TD passes in the 4th quarter, an NFL record. I might be a little off, Ill check it. Amazingly in 16 games that year seattle held the halftime lead exactly 3....times...

I dunno. Love me some PC but then you look at GB firing McCarthy after a lot of wins and a lombardi and still pretty young . Matt Lafleur comes in there and they are 14-4 went to the conference championship with basically the same team.

I cant root for PCs retirement, hes beloved and hes earned a long rope but the unknown is what might have been. I think we have had one of the very best QBs ever to suit up in the history of this league the past 8 years. When you combine stats, turnovers , his deep ball, his durability , his ability to make explosive plays with his feet, his attitude, his leadership It's hard to think of anyone who compares. He's played with terrible lines almost every year. He is clearly not featured in this offense even though I believe he could put up Drew Brees or Brady in his prime style #s without the turnovers if he had that protection.

Brees was sacked 14 times all year. He got about half that vs the Vikes and folded. That's a normal sunday for Russ He wins games like that all the time.
I wish they would give the ball or at least give the calls to Russ.
