Key Dates In Seahawk's Offseason

Postby RiverDog » Mon Jan 20, 2020 10:39 am

From our old friend the Seattle PI:

Feb. 24-March 2 → NFL Scouting Combine

The combine offers Seahawks’ personnel (and all NFL people) the opportunity to conduct interviews with the top draft-eligible college football players and watch them perform athletic tests.

March 10 → Deadline for teams to designate Franchise or Transition players

This date is important to keep in mind for defensive tackle Jarran Reed, the team’s only realistic tag candidate. According to Over The Cap, the franchise and transition-tag tender values for defensive tackles in 2020 are projected to be $15.5 and $12.32 million, respectively. The designation period begins Feb. 25.

March 16-18 → Start of free agency

NFL teams can begin contract negotiations with impending unrestricted free agents March 16. Deals can officially be inked at 4 p.m. ET on March 18.

The Seahawks have 19 players set to become UFAs: DE Jadeveon Clowney, DE Ziggy Ansah, LB Mychal Kendricks, OT/TE George Fant, LG Mike Iupati, DT Al Woods, RT Germain Ifedi, DL Quinton Jefferson, WR Josh Gordon, WR Jaron Brown, DB Akeem King, DT Jarran Reed, RB Marshawn Lynch, CB Neiko Thorpe, DE Dekoda Watson, RB Robert Turbin, QB Geno Smith, TE Luke Willson and RB C.J. Prosise.

March 18 is also the deadline for teams to submit qualifying offers to restricted free agents to retain the right of first refusal/draft-choice compensation. The Seahawks have four RFAs: C Joey Hunt, TE Jacob Hollister, DE Branden Jackson and WR David Moore. The deadline for restricted free agents to sign their offer sheets is April 17.

Seattle has just over $59 million in cap space for 2020, per OTC.

March 22 → K.J. Wright

If the Seahawks want to move on from K.J. Wright, they have reason to do so before this date. As part of the two-year deal he signed last spring, he’s due a $1 million roster bonus on March 22 -- the fifth day of the new league year.

March 30 → New date of Kendricks’ insider trading case (according to ESPN)

This plays a critical role in Mychal Kendricks’ availability for 2020. Should the federal court come down with a hard punishment for his role in insider trading (potentially jail time), that all but rules out the Seahawks re-signing him. If Kendricks gets minimal punishment, however, that could clear the way for Seattle to bring him back. Coach Pete Carroll has said he wants Kendricks back next season.

April 23-25 → NFL draft

The Seahawks are currently slated to have eight draft picks in all, including the three compensatory picks they’re projected to receive: a first rounder (No. 27 overall), two second rounders, one third, two fourths, one fifth and a sixth.

Thanks, RD.
That gives us a framework for what to expect and when.
