RiverDog wrote:Actually we haven't played that badly against the Rams in the past few years. We had one really bad game when we split with them in 2017 and even though they swept us last season, we only lost to them by a combined 7 points. In this game, I not only think we have a chance, rather we should be favored and I would be disappointed in a loss. The Rams are not the class of the league last year and I don't think they win the division.
Jared Goff does not handle pressure well, and they've had some problems protecting him. The 12th man will be out in full throat and with guys like Ziggy and Clowney in the lineup together, we might be able to get another defensive TD. I saw a stat showing that during the Pete Carroll era, we're 18-0 when we get a pick 6.

I dont block anyone. We've done OK with those unis too?

Russ played a hell of a game. I imagine Idhawkman will find some criticism of Russ like not running on the field fast enough. 151 Qb rating isn't enough.

trents wrote:Good win. Sometimes you need lady luck's help and tonight that was the difference. Run game looked good again tonight and against what has been a top team defensively, though maybe not as strong as last year.
Lack of a pass rush on the Hawk's side continues to be a concern and baffles me.

obiken wrote:The Rams were lucky too, we hit that FG before the half and they would have been chasing us all game long. The Rams are in trouble, their defense really sucks. RW had 4 td passes and our offense is not that good. We will see. Greatest pick by Thompson I have ever seen! The catch? What can you say.

RiverDog wrote:Comparing any QB from a different era to any QB of the modern era is truly apples and oranges.
I couldn't give a rusty intercourse if Russell wins the MVP or is a first ballot HOF'er or not. I love him to death but except for the historical aspect, I'm 100% about the team vs. recognition for its individual components. I would gladly trade an HOF induction for Russell for another Lombardi.
Having said that, Russell is playing at an MVP level, but two things have to happen for him to expand his trophy case: He has to maintain his fast start through 16 games and we have to be one of the best teams in the conference, by earning a first round bye for him to qualify. And you're right, he's going to need at least a league MVP, probably as SB MVP as well if he's to get into the HOF on the first ballot. Quarterback is more of a statistical/award position, and those seem to be the qualifiers.
But let's not get too preoccupied with Russell's performance. The team as a whole is playing well as we're finding ways to win, but we have some major work to do, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, before we can call ourselves SB contenders. That was the first really good team we've beaten this season, and there's a lot more of them left on the docket.
Aseahawkfan wrote:Not true. All Russell has to do is maintain this level of performance throughout his career and he will be first ballot without an MVP or another Super Bowl, though both would be nice. His statistics would place him with the best of all time with at least one Lombardi, probably the best mobile QB in history, and one of the most efficient and consistent.
RiverDog wrote:Honest question: Can you name a HOF QB in the modern era that doesn't have either a league MVP or a SB MVP? I thought about Marino and Aikman but one had a league MVP, the other a SB MVP. Kurt Warner has both a SB MVP and a league MVP. The only QB I can think of is Warren Moon, who had a number of CFL individual awards to supplement his NFL resume. After all, it's the Professional Football Hall of Fame. Plus Moon was the first black QB to be inducted.
Without any disrespect to Russell or those that argue want to argue the opposite, I really think that he or any other HOF QB in this day and age of it being a quarterback's league is going to have to earn at least one of those two awards as a prerequisite to a gold jacket.
I will say this though: After 5 games, Russell has to be considered the favorite for the league MVP. He really is playing lights out so far this season and I can't think of another player that can equal what he's done so far this season.
Aseahawkfan wrote:Russell gets overshadowed by all the Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady grandstanding. He plays on a team that doesn't get much national talk. He plays in a run first offense. He also plays on a team that hasn't kept him surrounded with high quality receiving weapons and he's been told the entire time to keep the offense on track and keep us winning. That's what he has done.
RiverDog wrote:That's an argument against Russell's possible induction, not for it. I'm not saying he wouldn't deserve the HOF if he never gets a MVP, and furthermore, I'm not the one that needs convincing. I'm simply saying that voters will look for those two awards, along with team performance (those two awards usually coincide with superior team performance), before they look at individual stats. That's why Vinny Testeverde and Dave Krieg never got a whiff of a gold jacket even though their stats were HOF worthy.
And just curious, can you come up with a HOF QB that hasn't won at least one SB MVP or one league MVP?
Once again, I have to add my disclaimer that I'm not disrespecting Russell at all, to the contrary. I agree with everything you've said about him. I'm just giving an objective opinion by trying to factor out my own homerism.
