Roster updates

Postby govandals » Sun Sep 01, 2019 10:14 am

Should be a busy day today:

Just saw Jazz to Seahawks PS!
Marsh to Cardinals
McKissic claimed by Lions
Hawks want to re-sign Geno Smith.
Terry Wright, Nkansah, Hollister also to PS.
Jachai Polite cleared waivers and to our PS as well. 3rd round pick with a questionable love for football. Interesting.

I hope we can keep Jazz for the whole year. I think he could develop into a good player.

Yes, that's great news about Jazz making it to the practice squad. Odds are that one of our receivers will sustain some sort of injury.

Yup, Geno Smith is re-signing. Probably the most competent back-up qb in the Russell Wilson era.

That must mean that the Clowney deal is finalized.

As far as Smith being the most competent back-up, that's highly speculative. Geno hasn't even put on the blue and green for a regular season game. Playing well in the preseason doesn't make a good backup.

But at least he’s been a starting Quarterback in the NFL and has won some games along with being able
to run almost the same Offense. He threw a couple of nice deep balls in pre - season, too.

I am happy about GS but surprised no one picked him up when he was cut.

He wasn't subject to the waiver process, so they couldn't pick him up like teams have with other players that were cut. We apparently had a gentleman's agreement with Geno before he was cut for him to re-sign after the Clowney trade went through, giving us the roster space.

I forgot about Tarvaris Jackson. He may be the best back-up qb in the RW era. I'll bet Jackson's and Geno Smith's numbers are comparable.

Moot point, anyway.

Hopefully Geno is nothing more than a clipboard holder.

That's all any backup during the Russell Wilson era has been. Russell hasn't missed a start since entering the league.

The only attributes in which we can measure the effectiveness of our backup quarterbacks over the Russell era are those we as fans know the least about, like their relationship with the starter and ability to assist in analyzing defenses, their work in practices, and so on. Brady Quinn, although he never suited up for a regular season game, was brought in specifically to help work with Russell on certain aspects of quarterbacking.

Apparently the Geno re- signing is official.
Here’s a link that includes the PS members as well.

It’s interesting that we seemingly bettered the team in a big way while adding 10 rookies.
Considering we only had 4 draft picks in March, JS has done a great job and we should have
more than $60 million in Cap space next year, too.

Not to mention resigning our two best players to multi year contracts.

This is the best offseason management that I've ever witnessed, at least as it relates to the Hawks. JS has done all that he can, but it won't be worth peanuts unless the coaches and players make it happen on the field.

He wouldn't have started once we traded for Clowney, but yes, it was a surprise to see them let Marsh go.

Marsh has been cut 4 times now... Seahawks, 49rs, Pats and Seahawks again.. Maybe we're the ones who are overrating him.

My pick for best b/u QB is #7 TJack. He won every OT coin flip he went out for and we won each game because of it. What a great b/u QB to have.

My biggest surprise was keeping Ed Dickson. He's a little old in the tooth considering all the young dudes we kept as B/Us. I could of seen keeping Brown as our W/R over him now that I know we only paid 7m in cap for Clowney. Now, that move doesn't make any sense at all.
Who is the #2 receiver?

It wasn't just us fans that were over rating Marsh. He was getting a lot of work with the first team and was a projected starter prior to the Clowney trade. We already know what he has to offer so there wasn't a lot of sense giving him reps if they didn't intend to keep him. But it's a little easier to rationalize given the Clowney trade than the move with Brown.

I'm not sure about Marsh either, but just as with Brown, my default position is to trust Pete where defensive players are concerned.

As far as the best Seahawks BU QB, I cant believe no one has mentioned the backup we had that was better than half of our starters ... Trent Dilfer was without question the best backup we ever had.

Oh, I'm not questioning the team's judgement on any of the cuts. I was just expressing my surprise.

I think the discussion about backup QB's was limited to the Russell Wilson era, or at least that's how it started out.

We just re-signed Brown and put Dixon on IR. Which makes cutting Jaron in the first place make better sense now; we wanted to be able to get Dixon to IR in regular season so we'd have him available for the stretch run. If we'd IR'd him Saturday it would have been for the season.

Either John doesn't mind rolling the dice exposing key role players to free agency or we are getting handshake deals with them to hold tight while we shuffle the roster a bit.

Aaah, now that makes sense. Dickson still has to miss at least 8 games before being eligible for a return, but it will be nice to have him back, I liked what he did last year in the limited time we saw him.

I have to think those "handshake" deals are happening everywhere, so with both Geno and Jaron, you have to think they were told up front what was going on and what would happen. For the way they talked about Brown this offseason, it certainly all left us scratching our heads at that cut on Saturday. I don't think either was waiver eligible to be claimed, so they could just sit tight and wait for things to play out.

WR is obviously still a bit of a concern, but have to think the run game will be prominent again to set up the pass. We have some young guys that will need to develop a little quicker than maybe expected.

Boy, you learn something new every day. There had to be something else besides money and performance that was going on with Brown. This is the strangest roster shuffle I've seen, but it all makes sense once the details became known.

This one isn't as much of a head scratcher. We're knee deep in LB's and we obviously have our eyes set on someone at another position and need the roster spot.

No doubt River, if we lose Wilson for the season, we are doomed anyway. The best you can hope for is a Backup that can win 3/5 games that the Starter would have won. BTW did you guys see the arms on RW? He has bigger guns than a lot of our WR's!

We just resigned FB Nick Bellore, so we're back up to 53, and we signed Kyle Fuller and Jachai Polite to the practice squad:

Interesting story about Polite. He was projected as a possible first round pick, fell to the Jets in the 3rd round due to some character concerns, then had a tumultuous training camp piling up over $100K in fines for "tardiness and other issues." The Jets cut him, he falls through waivers, then we sign him to our practice squad. Check out some of the crapola in the linked article below:

I think this past 2 days of cutting and resigning Brown and IR'ing Dickson means that Pete reads this blog and realized he made a big mistake. It's OK. It's why we're all here.

Now he needs to rethink Calitro. Nothing against Shaquem Griffin, but he's not the LB that Calitro is. Maybe it's the Special Teams play of Shaquem, who is very good downfield.

They might be envisioning 'quem as part of a NASCAR package for passing situations. That was his long suit in college, ie rushing the QB.

It’s tough to keep 7 LBs, and even 6 is unusual, but Griffin also plays a DE/OLB like you said.
I wonder if they envision a Jacob Martin type role.
There was talk of Griffin going to IR because of his knee (and being able to stash him),
but I haven’t heard if that’s what they’re doing.

Since this is an existing Roster Update Thread...

After trading for Parry Nickerson, we cut him and re-signed Jamar Taylor.
We also brought in 3 DB's: CBs Linden Stephens, Herb Waters, and D.J. White for workouts.
They must not like something about our nickel corners.
