1st preseason game

Postby c_hawkbob » Fri Aug 09, 2019 10:11 am

As if by design (duh) the rookies were the show.

- Jazz looked great! DK wasn't bad (he had one nice catch and was a poor throw away from what could have been a spectacular play; great position but an overthrow from Geno) but Jazz looked the way you'd have wanted your first pick to look. Of course, he and Paxton Lynch were making each other look good.
- our Two Utes, especially Cody Barton had nice games. Both he and Marquise Blair big negative yardage plays early against Denver's starters.
- Ugo looked more like a corvette on coverage teams.

In or big competition of the night it looked to me like Paxton separated himself pretty effectively from Geno Smith, but I'll have to look at him running against some better competition before making a prediction, he looked good but that's not as hard to do in the second half of the first preseason game against players (at least many of whom) that likely won't be on a 54 man roster come regular season. He was also extra motivated playing against the team that drafted him with their first pick a couple years ago and then gave up on him ...

Overall a decent first dip of the toes in the pool.

We have direct tV or no Hawks TV so i didn't see the game till today on NFL network. Definitely some bright spots. I can see why they brought in Lynch.

I only saw the first half last night and will watch the 2nd half sometime this PM.

I wasn't real impressed with what I saw in the first half. Geno Smith didn't look sharp at all, and from my understanding, Lynch looked a lot more polished. Barton was out of position and got washed out of a long gainer but otherwise looked OK. Secondary looked decent if not good, but then again, not a lot of deep balls thrown on them. Myers needs work on his long kicking, was a couple of feet from being 0-2 in the first half.

Best thing about preseason games is that they're a definite indicator that the regular season is just around the corner.

Xavier Turner surprised me considering he's only had time to meet people and not absorb the playbook.
He had some good runs and shows some signs of being a tough runner. If he continues being a solid
RB, he might replace Mike Davis as one of the RB's. But it's only 1 pre-season game.

The screen pass to Penney made my mouth drool looking at his burst through the second level. I saw why his stats looked so bad rushing as he was dropped for about a 6 yard loss on a play he had no chance. That guy is going to make people understand why Seattle took him this season IMO

Great summary Bob.

yeah, I think Penney behind our starting oline will have a lot more of those runs like he did on the screen. He just needs a crease to get through and into the secondary and then he's going to be hard to stop.

River and I predicted Penny will improve and he has. the OL sucked on the penalty front, and the WR corp is still a work in progress. Trying to draw any predictions from Pre-Season is a wasted venture, but score B+.

I hope you see the humor obi, in saying what a wasted venture making predictions after the first preseason game is in the same post as bragging about a prediction you made before it ... ;)

Just for fun I'll predict (even though I said I wouldn't yet) That Jazz Makes the team.

I hope you are right even if it is the practice squad. We've had a dynamic WR the last few preseasons that looked good but didn't make the team. So even though I hope he makes it, I'm not convinced he will based on recent history.

I think he will, too. Considering that he didn't play CFB vs. a high level of competition, I think he played extraordinarily well.
