Well that sucks. They are going to have to get healthy quick so they can EARN a spot on the roster.

PUP list in TC ain't like the PUP list in regular season, they can be taken off or put on at any time. I'm not terribly concerned yet.

This. Our first preseason game is still a full 3 weeks away, and if you look at the nature of their conditions, you can't really call it "injuries" as they didn't hurt themselves. It's not an "injury" list, it's physically unable to participate. There's a difference.

PUP - Physically Unable to Perform.
Blair - Hamstring
Burr-Kirven - Sports Hernia surgery
Knox - Lisfranc
Christmas and Haynes - unknown

So we have 5 rookies that aren't ready for TC. Great start to the year.
Haynes didn't miss much time at College, I hope it's not a trend for the Pro's.
Each of these players have to earn a spot and it's not a good start.

It might have been the plan all along to hold them out.

There's an ESPN article that explains this is just a step to keep the team's flexibility in place. There are rules about when someone goes on these designations and when you can take them off as a result, etc.

No big.

I'll go with the "we're not taking any chances" routine. By putting them on preseason PUP, we can bring in 5 more rookies to look at this week.

Rookies need all the time on the field they can get, so I don't buy it's just a roster room issue.
If it were, I think they would be putting players that were UFA's, not 2nd and 4th round
draft picks, or any draft picks at all on PuP.

I don't know if it is or isn't, but this is the explanation given (from Brady Henderson):

"Only players who go on PUP at the start of camp are eligible to begin the regular season on PUP, in which case they'd have to stay there for the first six weeks of the regular season before being eligible to play. But players can come off PUP anytime between now and the end of the preseason. So a move to PUP now is about maintaining roster flexibility."

It's concerning to me that the players that are missing time might be
thought of as expected to contribute this year and missing any time
at TC can set the behind others who in all probability won't be
expected to play or make the team.

Have Haynes and Christmas arrived in camp so out of shape they aren't ready to practice?
Or do they have some nagging injuries that will follow them throughout
the year such that their play might be impacted?

I'll look again shortly, but I'm pretty sure they are all either injured or coming off surgery.

[edit]

Found the full quote on espn.com:

"With Seahawks rookies reporting early for training camp on Wednesday, the team placed four of them on the Physically Unable to Perform list: safety Marquise Blair (hamstring), guard Phil Haynes, linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven (sports hernia surgery) and defensive tackle Demarcus Christmas. Guard Demetrius Knox (foot) was placed on the Non-football Injury list. Only players who go on PUP at the start of camp are eligible to begin the regular season on PUP, in which case they'd have to stay there for the first six weeks of the regular season before being eligible to play. But players can come off PUP anytime between now and the end of the preseason. So a move to PUP now is about maintaining roster flexibility. Of the five rookies, Blair, a second-round pick, has the best shot at winning a starting job if healthy."

Good that Blair and Burr-Kirven are ready to participate. They should contribute this year.
Haynes hopefully will get back soon, but the concern remains with rookies more than
vets that missing significant time puts them so far behind that they never catch up their
first year. With Fluker and Iupati not expected be able to play every game, Haynes needs
all the TC time he can get. I know, we have some depth on the OL this year, but Haynes
could be a young Fluker or Iupati if he gets the reps early.

Looks like we're not going to face AJ Green in the season opener. And that's why the NFL balances it all out. I think Dissly is the biggest return of our injured and the most important. It was only 4 weeks, but he's a Mini Gronk. Gives Russell a quick option over the middle teams need.

Apparently Hollister is a little like that, too, so it may turn out we have a much improved pass Offense that includes more
action for the TE's. With a younger WR corps and no Doug Baldwin, it might become Russell's favorite relief valve or
even better, way to get 1st downs in a pinch.

It doesn't involve any of our guys, but it looks like we won't have to be facing AJ Green in our opener:

Personally, I think our team does better when they game plan against a known entity no matter how good they are. I think that the unknown hurts us more in our preparations. This may be a bad thing for us - I'd rather that Green was healthy for our matchup.

LJ Collier went down with a leg injury in practice. He was carted off.
It seems when a team is weak in one position, the injury bug hits there.

Yea, no kidding. Remember the year when we had so many injuries at WR that we had to start working out our backup QB at that position?

Just heard Collier will miss the entire pre season with an ankle injury on Sirius XM Sports update.

Suspected high ankle sprain, which will put him in jeopardy of missing the first regular season game.

Without the TC reps, he won’t contribute very much this year.
Another injury of note is Iupati was seen in a Walking boot.
I doubt he plays 8 games this year.

Ugh. It's starting to get ugly and we've just barely started training camp. Vegas has the Hawks odds of winning the Super Bowl at 28-1. I'm glad I didn't take that bet.

A part of me says, "good". I never like to see a player hurt and that hasn't changed. I think in this case though, the work that Metcalf did at UCLA with Russ over the off season along with the reports we were hearing out of training camp has them on the same page already. No sense showing our hand too early by playing the kid in the preseason games.

Are you talking about Collier or Metcalf, ID?
Collier needs all the reps and pre-season action he can get otherwise he will be behind in the regular season.
Missing TC and not being ready until the season starts will probably mean he will be as effective as Green was
last year. Basically it will be a red shirt season for Collier.

Awe crap!!! I got them crossed up in my mind. Yeah, not good as I think he needs the reps on defense. Thanks for catching me on this.

Undrafted rookie tight end Justin Johnson was carted off the field with what is feared to be an Achilles injury, which could be season ending.

On a brighter note, OG Mike Iupati is no longer wearing a boot on his injured foot as he has been since training camp began and Pete characterized him as "doing great" (what else is new?).

That's a bummer for the youngun'. I hope he gets better quickly but as far as the team goes, I think we are strong at TE and not sure he had much of a chance to make the 53 on this team. Still, I hate seeing people get injured in training camp especially with a season ending injury.

With Collier out for what appears to be an indefinite amount of time (Pete said "weeks"), don't be surprised if we make a trade before the start of the season.

On a brighter note, it looks like TE Will Dissly is ahead of schedule in his recovery:

Dissly was back on the field, albeit in a limited role, during the first two practices of training camp Thursday and Friday, an ahead-of-schedule return just 10 months after a devastating rupture of his right patellar tendon ended his rookie season in late September.

I doubt we make any trades since we already did that in the off season for DE. Here's who we still have and its a fairly good list. Not sure we would be able to get better in a trade than whats on the roster already.

Ziggy will be ready for game 1

Some surprisingly good veteran players are going to be cut before the season starts.
It wouldn't surprise me if we bring a few in to see if they still have it or can contribute.

Which is why I'm saying not to be surprised if we make a trade for a DL. If a decent vet is about to get cut, we might offer up a late round draft pick for him. There's way too many question marks at that position.

Keep an eye on the performance of the DL during the preseason.

That makes sense with our haul of picks we have next year.
Pete says he's targeting Ansah to start the year.
I also think that maybe Jacob Martin can take a big step forward. He showed
some promise late in the year where he came close a lot more than earlier.

Yesterday's injury report:

Defensive lineman Quinton Jefferson and standout rookie linebacker Cody Barton sat out of practice. Both have unknown injuries.

Linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven participated in team scrimmaging for the first time Friday, joining fellow rookie Marquise Blair, who took part in 7 on 7s and 11 on 11s for the first time on Thursday. Both were activated off the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list last week. Burr-Kirven took most of his snaps at the weakside spot.

Defensive end Ezekiel Ansah, still limited at practice, was in pads for the first time. The Seahawks hope he can be ready by Week 1, and him being pads is another step in the right direction in his recovery from shoulder surgery.

Hopefully Jefferson's injury isn't anything more than an excuse to skip practice.
