Rashan Gary falling?

Postby govandals » Wed Apr 24, 2019 9:32 pm

Been reading a lot tonight about Michigan DE Rashan Gary falling in the draft because of a shoulder issue. Most thought he was a top 15, maybe a top 10 pick. If he is there at 21 will PCJS pull the trigger? I think they will.

Possibly. Their 2nd first round pick gives them some flexibility to take a player who isn’t 100% healthy.
Another player with an injury is Jeffery Simmons who is recovering from an ACL injury. He’s been said
to be a top 5 pick before the injury, so they would have to keep him on the sideline until later in the
year. They might be risk averse, though, after the Malik McDowell choice and limited selections.

I would! I think he's a top 5 talent in a world where QB's don't get elevated because of their position.

In addition to his shoulder problem, he didn't have a real productive college career, either, and now he's going to the next level?

He'll be a player to keep an eye on later today, but if he'll probably be gone by #21 anyway if we're still sitting on that pick.

They seem to want players that can play at their best from the start with their 1st round picks, so I wonder if the injury
factors into their thinking. He has the athleticism that our FO looks for, but I don't believe they have ever taken a player
that has any type of physical concern with their first pick. Maybe this is the year, though.

With the Defense now really needing an upgrade with the pass rush, it wouldn't be surprising if they wanted to make sure
they hit on their selections and maybe think about getting a player who had better college stats when pressuring the QB.

I agree. We're once again viewing ourselves as a team that's a player or two away from SB contention (that wasn't the case last season) so selecting a player that can make an immediate impact makes a ton of sense. I doubt if you see us burning early draft choices on 'project' players.

No, I don't think they will burn early draft choices on project players, but I think in this draft there are a lot of players well into the 2nd round that can be
excellent players and in the right scheme can be candidates for the Pro Bowl at some point in their career. I'm thinking DL specifically with that comment.
