A couple of new signings

So the team signed S Maurice Alexander and S/DB TJ Green.
Rotoworld has Green listed as a S, but other sources just say DB.
He's apparently 6-3, so he fits the profile of a conversion project and he played WR his first year at Clemson.
He also ran a 4.34 at the Combine. He was waived/injured by the Colts because of a hamstring injury.

They better find a superior pass rush fast.... they just lost the highest rated defensive player in the league over the first month, that helped hide that deficiency, without it, if the pass rush doesn't improve, those young corners are being tasked with a incredibly difficult situation to succeed in. One that likely exposes them and the inexperience they have. Add in yet another backend young player, and the likelyhood of multiple blown assignments, communication issues, getting filled increases dramatically.

Sherman wasn't that fast. I can't remember his 40 time, but I know it was north of 4.5, maybe even 4.6. It's one of the reasons why he slid to the 5th round.

I can't prove it but I always thought Sherman was faster on the field than his timed result. He seemed to be able to make up ground on a WR once the ball was in the air or when a RB got loose. He and ET would usually run them down before the end zone. Maybe it was because the ball in the air or the RB was like a Carrott to him.

I think what you're talking about isn't necessarily pure speed. Sherman was quoted as saying he want to 'show the QB what he wants to see' as a way to bait him into throwing...which could include his position at the LOS, and the perceived separation during the route, which could theoretically lull the receiver into not running full speed if he's already got separation. Once the ball is thrown, Sherman has a knack for regaining space on the way to the ball. I agree he's not the fastest or best athlete, but he might be the smartest.

Sherman ran a 4.60 at the combine and a 4.53 at his pro day:

The 4.60 is what more than likely scared teams away and caused him to drop in the draft. I agree with I5 and Idahawk, there were other intangibles that allowed Sherman to compete despite what would have been a critical disadvantage for a cornerback. Another thing Sherman would do is that he'd "chicken fight" by tangling his arms up with the receivers to where it looked like both players were using their hands but not making it blatant enough to get called for holding. I can vividly remember Hairball complaining about Sherman's holding and not getting called for it.
