QB Money - Rodgers extends

Postby NorthHawk » Wed Aug 29, 2018 11:02 am

Apparently he's getting $33.5/year with his extension with $100 million guaranteed.
I expect us to re-sign Russell for similar.

Yup, that could well be the template for Russ' next contract.

If the trend continues with similar Cap increases, in 2 years it could be approximately $20 million more, so the relative net increase to the team Cap would be $2 million - $5 million more/year.
Still a hit, but maybe not as bad as it looks today.

Here's an opinion piece from PFT that talks about what to expect for Wilson and how they think he's going to play it.
That's a whole lot of money.

Florio has basically just outlined the incentive the Seahawks have to make him a "best ever" type deal before the end of this contract, and explained why he'd be doing the team a favor to sign it (though he would inevitably be called greedy anyway). Assuming he wouldn't is just Florio being Florio.

Wilson is going to be a Saint

Brees is going to retire

Seahawks don't have that kind of money to pay someone 5-10

Not surprisingly, you have your head between your cheeks again. Why would the Saints trade a 3rd round pick for Teddy Bridgewater if they intended to make a run at Russell?

Additionally, the Hawks have cleared a ton of money off their books and can afford a top 5 QB just as easily as anyone else.

There's always a chance that Russell won't resign with the Hawks, but he's not going to New Orleans. Try again.

Not to mention the Cap increases the next 2 years might be close to $20 million which should take some of the impact out of such a large contract for Wilson.

Two years? I would think that we'd try to resign Russell prior to 2020. The price tag on a top 5 QB is only going to increase.

According to the premise of the article, Russ will get tagged for 2 years so as to get more guaranteed money early, then sign a big contract or go to FA to maximize his salary and like Cousins get a long term guaranteed contract.
It’s just the writers opinion but it will be interesting how things play out.

If it works and he gets a huge amount of money, others will try the same tactic and perhaps force changes for guaranteed contracts or like we discussed earlier in the year maybe making a Cap exception for QB’s or other franchise type players.

Are you assuming that other positions won't increase in price and that the whole cap increase can be spent on RW?

They aren't increasing at the same rate as QB's and as a % the cost for a franchise QB will in time go down after the initial output.
I still think there will be an effort to address this issue like 1 roster spot Cap exempt or a QB exemption. It will happen when the
media darling teams like Dallas, NY, or maybe Philadelphia have to pay out, though and not a team far from the center of the media universe.

You may be right on that. I don't know if they will have one cap reserved spot and it would make sense to do so, IMO. I think what might throw dirt in that chain would be the rookie salary (first contract) terms. Something I just thought of while typing this would also be that the most athletic kids would all want to be QBs from ankle biters all the way up to college because the money would be there. Interesting idea though.

There would be problems with that, I'm sure but with a lot of money now guaranteed in recent deals, it begins to make some sense.
I think that it might be a teams choice as to who to designate as Cap exempt.
I just read that Donald just signed for 6 years and $135 million with $87 million guaranteed so without Goff on his mega deal (should he actually be worth it at that time) they could designate Donald as the Cap exempt player.
Same thing with someone signing a dominating DE or LT.
I think the players would agree to this as it gives more to the rest.

It just occurred to me that they could also do something creative like having a % exempt (25 or 50% for discussion sake), but it couldn't be assigned to a tagged player- only a contracted player.
It might also mean the Cap as a whole wouldn't increase as much which could be a carrot for the owners.

Without Rodgers, GB would be a 5 to 6 win team. You have to pay him.

We will have to decide on RW next year.

Can you win 10 or 11 games with Hundley?

You pay RW... he will get 33-35/yr and it will be a tough pill to swallow at first, but just like this contact it will feel like a bargain towards the end. I mean RW is ‘only’ going to average like 22 mil over the next 2 years. Compared to Jimmy G, Ryan, Cousins, Flacco, Carr, Brees, and Rodgers it looks like a pretty good deal.

RW can throw the deep ball fairly accurately. We didn't have a run game, now we should.

With just Schottenheimer calling the plays, it should make a difference.

I want to see how effective Schottenheimer's play-calling is on 3rd downs.

But, we have a great punter, so field position might dictate the play call.

By nature, Schottenheimer is conservative like his Dad.
