Don't like what I see so far

Postby trents » Sat Aug 18, 2018 9:00 pm

I realize you can't tell much of anything from preseason games but I see little to impress me from the Hawks so far. Of particular concern is punt and kickoff coverage (or lack of it). A lot of the guys we are seeing in preseason will be the bodies used during the regular season in those situations. The Hawks just aren't competing well in the first two games and this is different from their preseason efforts in recent history.

I Think we need some help at our defense and FA is the best option right now

Really, we need more than defensive help fellows.

Offensively David Moore made a couple incredible plays, Carson still looks like a quality starter at RB and Russ is still Russ. Fant at RT when he's all the way back looks more and more likely...

Defensively Rasheem was the only real bright spot ... after sparkling last week Shaquim still plays fast but looked like it was his second pro outing getting taken out of a couple big plays nibbling on the wrong bait.

A pretty lackluster week 2 from a fan's standpoint but hopefully the coaching staff got some looks they needed to see going forward.

Offense looked pretty fair except for the red zone. Ticky tacky holding penalty on Dissly negated a TD on the opening drive. Russell's throwing the ball well, doesn't seem to hesitate like he did so often in the past, took some shots downfield, good decision making from what I could observe. OL doing a better job in pass protection although Ifedi got blown up on a critical 3rd down in the red zone. Carson ran well but had a red zone fumble. Not sure why Fluker came out..injury?

At this point, it looks like the defense will be laggging behind the offense until our new guys get settled into their roles. I pay zero attention to the final scores in preseason. The team looks pretty much like we've been expecting during the offseason, not a SB contender but not chopped liver, either.

I think the bright spot was some great catches by receivers in traffic. McGough looked more comfortable after the coaching staff dumbed down the offense for him this week. He's got a good arm.

I think the run game looked a lot better, with some good holes opening the last couple of weeks.
Like RD said, the Red Zone is still an issue, but I like the play calling a lot better with the play action pass.
Pass blocking isn't great, but maybe they think with Wilson, it doesn't have to be perfect and maybe they will have to keep Dissly in to help block the pass rushers on the right side.
Maybe even just a chip block could slow the DE/LB enough to allow the RT to get a better block.

Defensively, there is no LoB, but I think they will develop into a solid group. I doubt we will see a top 5 Defense this year like we've come to expect, though.

Yea, I'd settle for a top 10 or 12 D, especially if Earl's not in there.

Emphasizing the running game and a more ball control offense should help to keep scoring low, so I don't think we'll finish in the bottom half defensively.

As far as trent's observation about special teams coverage goes, they're having to deal with a new set of rules so everyone's going to need time to get adjusted to them so I wouldn't be too alarmed yet. I do think that in general, we'll see more kick returns beyond the 25 than in years past as coverage teams won't be able to get a running start like they used to. It will place a premium on place kickers that can consistently hit it deep into the end zone.

fluker hurt his finger I think, don't know how seriously but I suspect in a regular season game they'd a just rubbed some dirt on it and sent him back in.

I think Pete said he broke his finger in the post game report.

I read it is the right hand ring finger and was in a splint following the game on Saturday.
It went on to say if they had to play, he could just tape it to the other fingers and go play.

It's odd that we have 2 broken fingers to starters in pre season. I don't recall that happening before.

I didn't think it was possible, but it looks like Ifedi is even sh*ttier than last year.

Cripes.

Did you see him get blown up on the 3rd down pass to Vannett in the end zone that forced Russell to break the pocket?

I'm waiting for Roach, complete with all of his SMH's and LMAO's, to chime in and tell us how much better an OT Ifedi is that Brown.

I saw Brown get knocked on his can one play, too so it happens.
I still think they have to give any RT we have some help with a TE in some manner.

Yea, but Ifedi isn't getting much of a push on those short yardage plays, either. Take a look at the two plays at the goal line, the last one being when Carson fumbled. Top that off with his being a magnet for yellow flags and he becomes a huge liability. I expect us to do something, either move Fant over or execute some sort of trade, to shore up that position. Ifedi's just not cutting it.

He seemed to play better early with Fluker beside him than he did with Roos.
Maybe he just works better with Fluker or a Veteran who knows what he's doing.

Yea, maybe. But I'm getting a little tired of the excuses...changing positions, different system, yada yada yada. At some point, he's going to have to come to the party.

That was simply an observation, not an excuse.
Why his play would change is unknown to me.

Edit:
Here's a link from FieldGulls that puts Ifedi's struggles into perspective.
The point they make is there aren't a lot of successful Tackles in the league and not many following Ifedi in that draft.

This pretty much as I see it (kinda what I was referring to the prediction thread).

Greg Bell of the News Tribune reported that Fant was practicing extensively at RT today and the competition is on for that position.

I agree with most everything in that article too, except the part about our pass rush. He admits it’s a problem but sort of says maybe they’ll fix like they have in the past. IMO if we have a bad season that will be the reason (besides a key injury to RW or B-Wag).
