JR Sweezy Available

Postby mykc14 » Fri Jun 29, 2018 7:36 pm

The Bucs cut Sweezy today. He played well for us but was injured in Tampa (missed all of 2016 and the last 2 games of 17’). My bet is he goes to Oakland. He would be intriguing here but the team seams to really like Fluker at RG. He hasn’t ever played LG and the team seems to like Pocic so that’s not really an option either.

Since we have a new OC and OL coach, my guess is that the interest level in Sweezy isn't going to be anymore intense than any other guard that's been cut from another team.

I imagine it will be a little more intense. The GM and head coach have worked with him and know way more about him than some random guard. With that being said I agree that the OL coach and OC would have a ton of input on who we sign along the OL.

Many people were upset that we let him go, I wonder what the interest level amongst fans is in bringing him back.

I hope they're not interested.
He's been injured for the most part of the last 2 years and wasn't much better than average when here.

I'd like to see him in camp at least. Bringing him in for a look doesn't mean investing a whole lot.

It seems like there is a conscious effort to get bigger on the OL.
Cable liked to have a smaller RG, but big RT and LG, now the only players at OL on the roster under 300 lbs are Roos and rookie Jones. I would expect if they keep
Jones, they will ask him to put on some weight like Pocic did and Roos might not make the team.
A look? Maybe, but he's not much of a power type lineman like Solari seems to be building with.

If the price is right, be very, very interested... his strength has always been bulldozing people, he's better pass protector than Fluker by a mile, so if they can get him on a low cost contract, it would be a sound move, isn't like depth is bad, and it's time to get back to actually doing the whole "always compete" thing instead of just saying it.... certainly wouldn't be worse than a Marshall swing and miss.

Um... I think you're mistaking Sweezy for Okung ......or something... power is his game, always has been.

Came in the league at 298... doubtful he's still under 300#

Not knowing what he’d cost, I’d tend to agree w/ Bob. If he’s not too expensive, he wouldn’t hurt and he just might help - if only for depth &/or competition. I’m a little worried about DJ in pass-pro. We shall see.

Under Cable's scheme he had a big LG and smaller but quicker RG which Sweezy was. Smaller is relative, I guess but that's how Cable set up the OL.
Sweezy's problems were pass blocking, but he was OK in run blocking and I'm not sure he fits the power game that Solari is reported to be installing.
The Bucs had him listed at 298, too, but who knows if they were listing his drafted weight or current weight.

If he comes cheap, though he might be able to add something and with Fluker having an injury history as well maybe and experienced RG could help.

Apparently he's in Seattle today taking a physical.

That's pretty relative... Carpenter was LG... he was a monster... doubtful Sweezy isn't over 3 bills, but even if he is, what's that a decent sized steak?

As for pass blocking... eh... if they were even remotely concerned with trouble with pass blocking, neither Brown or Fluker would have been looked at, much less signed and brought in... Fluker since being in the league is the WORST rated pass blocking guard in the league, amongst those who Qualify... Sweezy has been in the league the entire time, that's an upgrade in pass blocking ( might add he rated higher than Joekle as well in both run and pass, and Seattle paid him a hefty one year sum) ...

Lot of people seem to focus on a couple blown plays, do the same with Ifedi ( who was by FAR the most productive pass blocking tackle on the team last year) his problem isn't blocking, but pre snap penalties...

Having competition for Fluker ( or Procic for that matter) as well as depth, depending on price certainly can't be viewed as a poor decision... though in Seattle, who knows? The standard is Walt, and anyone don't measure up to him is rubbish to be dumped asap...

Sweezy whiffed consistently in pass blocking and was better at run blocking, but he was never above average in that.
The Bucs paid him a lot because of the dearth of OL, but pressure up the middle blows up more plays than on the edge.
Add in his penalties after the whistle and it's not a pretty picture.
That said, he is experienced and may fit a backup role for when Fluker gets injured.

I don't know how good or bad he can be. I think if he's reasonably priced he should be brought into camp but that "always compete" should dictate as to whether or not he starts, sits or is cut.

I want to believe that many of the problems we had with the OL is the blocking scheme from Cable. We'll see this year if that is the case or not.

So the starting Guard on consecutive SB teams is a good backup for the worst rated guard in the league? Ok... sounds about right on the money.

That was 5 years ago and a different scheme.
Who knows what he has left or if he fits the power profile Scolari is using.

Fair point I guess but what I do know is that Fluker was the worst guard in the league, under Solari. You are saying who knows, but there's history there... I could just as easily say Sweezy is going to be a perennial all pro, HOF guard under Solari's tutelage...

I liked Sweezy. He had a mean streak without being a perpetual penalty machine like Geno as I recall. Why not make him a camp body at a minimum?
