5th. Rd. Picks

Postby Seahawks4Ever » Sat Apr 28, 2018 12:58 pm

We MOVED up in the 5th. round to draft a PUNTER, Michael Dickson. He must be the 2nd. coming of Ray Guy or Jon Ryan is some how asking for waaay to much for Pete and John's blood so don't get too comfortable Jon, you will have to EARN it this year! COMPETE RYAN COMPETE!!!

We also drafted Safety Tre Flowers who someone when he hits you it is like he is swinging a piece of wood.

We also drafted in the 5th. an OT by the name of Jamarco Jones. I don't know a thing about him but I like his name.

Yeah SH4E I agree, its sickening. We have taken one Olineman in the whole draft! Crazy. As I said, I am done with defending PC, I am just not for throwing him out.

I suspect Ryan is gone and I have to wonder about some of the picks that came after this one.
Tim Settle was someone that might have helped on the DL and Marcel Ateman went in the 7th. He's a 6'4" WR and we need more big receivers.

I have a better suggestion for renaming our Defense: "Shaq attack"

I've been saying for 2 years now that Ryan has lost something and I think the team has noticed it, too. I expect we will save some money on Ryan's salary this year.

If this kid can punt like Shane Lechler or Ray Guy, and get us 8-10 yards downfield on each punt... and then can develop that 'touch' to keep the ball inside the 20, then as a 5th round pick, he's all right by me.

That's the key. Can he do it on a regular basis is the question this pre-season will answer.

I hate drafting a punter but a need is a need and we needed better punting. The fact that 2 punters were picked between this guy and our next selection pretty much shows that we had to use a 5th to get the guy we wanted.

The problem with Jon Ryan is that he either got complacent or he has lost "something" . That "something" could be instability in his plant leg Why would he not get it fixed? fear maybe?) If Ryan is having a problem with his plant leg and/or foot then that would throw off everything, touch, length, and esp. hang time.

So, the basic fact is Ryan will have to compete for his job and if it is even close consider Ryan gone which to me is a foregone conclusion.

I thought the real need was a Kicker, not a punter.
Janikowski (sp) is getting pretty old and went on IR because of a back problem.
When you get to a certain age, these things keep cropping up and I think he might be at that age right about now.

I like having a good punter. If the guy turns out to be great, I'd be happy. A good punter can help special teams a great deal as we've seen during Ryan's great years.

Jon hasnt been quite the same lately. As my ever more astute 22 year old mini me Hawks fan son pointed out yesterday Ryan was having more and more problems with ball security fielding snaps as well. A punter is a weapon if the D can hold the territory. thats another question.

It does seem bizarre to trade up for a Punter , however knowing a bit about this bloke , he will quickly become elite at his position. Dicko , will be the Seahawks 2nd ever Aussie , and whilst the first Aussie we had , didn't pan out , that guy still has a Superbowl Ring (Jesse Williams). Dicko was part of the Sydney Swans academy (Australian Rules Football Team) , and his leg was so strong , he was constantly asked about the prospect of becoming an NFL Punter , and after obtaining some training , he got a scholarship with the Texas Longhorns , and has shown massive improvement every year. He won the award for your best college punter last year , and will obliterate poor old Jon Ryan. Apart from the traditional NFL kick type , you will see him unleash the "Drop Punt" , "Banana" and "Dribble" kicks , when the coaches learn to trust his unconventional ways. I have extreme confidence in this pick and some in the Griffin pick , but I am concerned about all the others. Whats the point of drafting a RB so high , when you have no-one to open the holes for him.

The problem isn't with the punter himself, it's that drafting a punter as early as the 5th and moving up to get him is a move that a team with very few needs would make, one that's already a SB contender, and that's not the case with our team. This was a luxury pick.

The conclusion that we can come to is they thought the value and/or need was greater than anything we could have got later in the draft.
A bunch of punters went pretty close after, so maybe it was good they got the pick of the litter at that point.
I hope he works out.

The below quote is what I didn't know about the punter we picked up. With PC's defensive philosophy, this pick makes a lot of sense.

Dickson, who grew up playing Australian Rules Football in Sydney, led the nation in gross punting average (47.4) and net average (44.2) last season, and he pinned opponents inside the 20-yard line on 42 of his 84 punts.

Half his punts he pinned opponents inside their own 20. That has to be a record or something. If we make teams go the length of the field on their possessions we should be "in" every game.

Can you imagine what his punting averages on gross and net yardage would have been if he had more room? INstead, 1/2 his punts he had to take something off them to pin them inside their own 20. This kid might just be another Ray Guy type of punter who changes the landscape of the game.

As great as his college stats are I hope he is not going to try and punt like many of the college teams have been punting "Aussie" style.

I hope that Dickson isn't going to try and bring Aussie style punting to the NFL. Sure, it can by exiting but I have seen it blown up quite a few times to know it will never work in the NFL except in maybe a few surprise punts.

I understand how the idea works on having a more rugby style punter, and how it can be beneficial.....but it still just seems too gimmicky to me...I am not that excited about our kicking/punting game this year, though our cover team should be one of the best in the league.

Interesting. The read option was pronounced "too gimmicky" just a few short years ago. Now, we have a perenial pro bowl QB that runs it every Sunday and he's not the only one.
