Off hand it comes across as a strange choice, given he's had no prior experience.
6 yrs makes no sense lol. Dunno details there, but that's too long of a leash for a rookie GM.

The x-factor to me is how deep his contacts/connections go around the league. If he can reboot their scouting and proves himself to be a decent evaluator of prospects, you never know.

For the time being, this isn't really a great reflection in terms of the interest on that level to work for Jed. There's also the thought that K Shanahan is really gonna be calling the shots with final say, given circumstances of Lynch getting on the job training. Whatever ends up happening, Lynch certainly won't be guilty of being lazy. He'll put in the effort and due diligence, but players as GM's (even ones in or going into the HOF) has a pretty spotty history. Regardless, John Lynch is a solid person to have as one of the faces of your franchise. Class guy for a team that's had plenty of issues lately.

This is a weird hire. Lynch has been around the game as a player and football analyst and I have no doubt that he's a sharp dude, but a GM?

He's going to get a trial by fire as the Niner's roster is all but depleted.

Right, they could be in a tail spin that they could take years to come out of.

I can only think they have a coach in mind who may have suggested him ...

His name has actually been floated a few times over the past few years for FO positions. Whats known is he was a fierce competitor and super smart.
He is an excellent analyst. My gut tells me hes going to be a good one if York lets him be.
With Shanahan coming in there that may not be a gimme for the rest of the league much longer, especially with rumors of a trade for Cousins or Rivers.

Smarts helps, but in this job, it doesn't trump experience. This is a huge gamble.
