National Championship Game

Postby mykc14 » Mon Jan 09, 2017 10:52 pm

What a game! It sort of reminded me of the USC vs. Texas game from years ago. Deshawn Watson played some unreal football against a relentless Bama D. On a side note it is always funny to see what the national narrative becomes. It seems like whatever the commentators discuss as any type of controversy becomes a big deal and often times they just don't know what they are talking about. A perfect example of that is the Clemson 'pick' plays that they continued to mention as being questionable and that Alabama fans would be upset about. Although both were pick plays neither was even close to being illegal and were executed extremely well by Clemson. Kearse needs to watch the first pick play because the Clemson Wr (I think it was actually their TE, but he was split out wide) executed it perfectly. Anyways, great game overall!

To be fair Kearse could run it identically, and still be called. I mean if a guy can get called for one without ever placing a finger on a guy, and simply standing in a spot, I'm not sure a perfectly run one with contact would ever be allowed.

It was Offensive PI. The outside receiver BLOCKED his defender long before the pass was thrown. If that had been our #15, we all know that would of been called. But it was a great game. I love good football.

That's where I disagree. The defender jams him which gives the receiver the right to fight towards his spot.

Yep, They didn't call it... the receiver's job was to disrupt the defender and he did it by blocking, with his two hands, directly into the defender who was backing up at the time. I've seen a lot less called O PI.

Of course we have seen a lot less called, Kearse got called for one when he was just standing there and didn't touch anybody, but that doesn't mean it was OPI. The WR is jammed, contact initiated by the defender, the WR has the right to use his hands to 'try' to run his 'route' which is exactly what he is doing. Usually on a pick play you will see OPI called if the WR contacts a different defender, not the one lined up on top of him because usually they are trying to get another WR open. The only time OPI should be called on a play like that is if the WR either holding the guy defending him or intentionally contacts a different defender with no attempt to be looking back for TE ball or running a route. I could see it getting called if he is just out there stick blocking (standing in one spot, not running a route like a WR would do on a bubble screen) but that's not what he was doing. He was trying to drive downfield and run a route.

We have seen less called, but that wasn't OPI- the defender created the contact at least as much if not more than the receiver did. The receiver isn't obligated to avoid touching the guy.

[edit- or, what mykc said. :)]
