Not sure how we can complain about this pick. We've all been desperate for an Offensive Lineman we got one that fits our scheme and an extra third rounder so we have the ammo to move up in the 2nd if there is a must have guy that continues to fall.

With the Dallas trade, they would have been risking missing Ifedi, and I don't think they wanted to take that chance.

Precisely. Ifedi has been mentioned in a lot of circles as being one of the players Seattle was targeting. They would have taken him with the #26 but they figured that the 4 teams between them and Denver's slot wouldn't take Ifedi, so they bit on Denver's offer. The fact that they turned down Dallas's offer tells me that they really like Ifedi. Like Kal says, there's not much to complain about, even from a critic like me. I wanted help on the OL and was getting tired of Pete's empty promises.

It will be interesting to see what happens today. We currently have 4 Day 2 picks. So do we move up and grab that must-have player? It should provide enough drama to keep me tuned in.

I think we had at least 4 players we liked well enough to have spent that pick on, but not seven. Bad luck Jerruh.

Here's the article about the proposed Seattle-Dallas trade. Nice that it was the Cowboys we left holding the chit end of the stick.

interesting, if true... we turned down the Cowboys offer of their second AND third round pick and would of gone more, but the Seahawks took Denver's offer instead. I would of had no issue with the Lynch to the Cowboys. Which offer would of been better? We wouldn't of ended up at the end of the first round, but would have waited only 4 more picks and would of ended with multiple 2's and a way better 3rd at least, and probably a little more.

That is interesting. They must have felt like ifedi wouldn't have lasted that long.

I guess they thought the shelf (or tier) of talent would end by the time they got to the Dallas pick.
I don't recall us ever trading down for a pick the following year. Have we done that under Schneider?

NorthHawk wrote:
I would be surprised if he started the first game at RT, but he might be at RG to begin.
It's going to take a while to get up to speed on NFL level of play and get to the point where he doesn't have to think about what he has learned from OTA's onward.

monkey replied:
LG most likely I would bet. I doubt RG, because at RG they tend to like guys to be a little bit smaller and quicker. LG they have used Carpenter, and Britt. They want BIG road graders at LG, and that is definitely Ifedi.

That is the pattern, monkey. The reason I thought RG, was he has played that in College along with RT and he's quick enough to do the things we normally do with the RG. As well, if he is to contend at RT, he doesn't have to learn the mirroring required to go to the other side of the line. It would seem that he could work into the starting lineup sooner. We'll see what we do.

Yeah, I can only surmise they didn't think he'd last to the Dallas pick. He needs some work in a pro-style system, but that is what Cable is for. You also can't teach size and length, which Ifedi has plenty of.

So, 2nd round pick. Perhaps and outside shot that either will be there, but, if you have the choice, would you go with:
Chris Jones, DT, MS State
Connor McGovern, C/G, Mizzou

I'm a Bulldog alum, so I'd love Jones as a Seahawk, but Connor looks like a dude the o line could really use. I'm going with Connor. Could seriously solidify the line with him and Ifedi.

The knock on Jones is he doesn't always give full effort. I don't know how true it is, but if there is any doubt, I wouldn't think PC/JS would want to use a 3rd on him.
Like someone (monkey perhaps?) above said, McGovern might be able to be used at Center to upgrade that spot. As well, Graham Glasgow was mentioned as a possible fit in the late 3rd or 4th.

At the moment, if we don't draft another lineman, we'd look like this:
LT: Gilliam
LG: *Webb/Ifedi/Britt
Center: Lewis
RG: Glowinski
RT: *Ifedi/Webb/Britt
* listed in order of who I think is most likely to start where as of right now.

Best part is, we're not done yet. Tomorrow we'll add at LEAST one more, possibly up to three more O-linemen, and one of them is bound to be a center to upgrade that spot.
After tomorrow, I expect the line to be, LT: Gilliam LG: Webb C: McGovern/or another rookie RG: Glowinski RT: Ifedi

I see this line actually improving over last years mess when all is said and done, in spite of the doom and gloom prognostications.

OK I am going into my draft whine mode. I hate to. But when is he going to be ready to play? Weak 9? Its like they always get a guy that never has any skill and has long arms and then try to coach him. Football focus had him as a 6th round pick. He is another project. He is another lump of clay, that if he works out Cable takes all the credit, IF not Cable has a built in excuse. NFL Scouts, ESPN, FBF, all have him as a looks the part but no skill. The NFL analysis is below. In short Monk, he is another project gosh damn it sob ect ect, we don't have time for projects. This guy IMHO, is 3 years away. Who know many with 6-6 325 we could move him to DT. I am fine with all of this till our future ends up with a torn ACL, then flip out will have an all new meaning. T A&M the home of lineman Bust.

Weaknesses Offensive scheme limited ability to fire out. Tries to snatch with hands and hang on rather than securing blocks with leg drive. Inconsistent depth of pass sets opens up edge. Timing of combo blocks needs work. Gets in a hurry and doesn't always get first block secured. Uses more of a kick stomp than fluid kick slide. High pad level on down blocks limits leg drive to secure. Passive vertical pass sets allow easy pocket squeeze. Needs to eliminate habit of leaning into blocks. Too content to stalemate rather than dominate. Patience and discipline is a problem in pass protection. Lunges rather than letting the rep come to him.

Everyone has a different opinion.
Even with the top picks, teams are still only drafting potential.
Sure there are higher probabilities with the earlier picks and they may be a little more polished, but they all need to upgrade their skills.
Ifedi has a very high ceiling, so at 31 (or even 26) it's a gamble of sorts.
At some point you have to take a leap of faith and trust what your research and scouts have concluded.

I wouldn't be surprised to see us use that 3rd round pick acquired from Denver to trade up in the 2nd. We're a team that unlike the Browns, we don't need numbers, so I can't see hanging onto 3 draft picks grouped so closely together.

I understand where you would get that impression, based on what has happened to both Carp and Britt. With that being said Ifedi is a much better athlete and his strengths are in the pass blocking department, which was our OL's biggest weakness last year and the weaknesses of both Carp and Britt coming out. Also, right here you discuss to different grades on him. One is a 6th round grade and one is a 2nd. That is a huge variation. We picked him with the last pick in the first round, which is basically a 2nd. All Offensive Lineman drafted are projects (except maybe one or 2). There are a lot of bad O-lines in the NFL and if you are going to have to teach technique to an O-lineman anyway it might as well be an extremely explosive athlete. The dude has a 35 inch vert and weighs 325 lbs.!!!

The Browns are really accumulating picks for both this and next years drafts.
Next year they have 2 firsts and 2 2nds and the year following 2 2nds and may trade down again to get more as they are fielding calls for the 32nd pick.
They have to use those picks wisely, though but their movements down the board have been impressive.

Aaaaannnnndddd the satisfaction of getting exactly what you have been clamoring for for three years is over... Surprised it lasted almost a whole day...

I reckon, they'll just have to cope with the criticism. It doesn't matter who they selected, there is ALWAYS negative reports SOMEWHERE for EVERY player( especially one drafted with the last pick of the first round. Are you kidding here? It almost feels like you are complaining because of Seattle's success) For your one example, I can provide literally a dozen that had him graded right where Seattle drafted him, saying the OPPOSITE of what PFF said.I can even post a link that says he should develop into a franchise LT that may indeed one day be the BEST tackle drafted the last five years.

Ultimately, it's a crap shoot whether it be Tunsil or Ifedi or any other player. That's what the draft is.

PFF is also the site that graded Gilliam as one of the best tackles in the NFL the second half of last season. Take it with a grain of salt, and see what the guy can do.

You just have to do a few of the Fanspeak mock drafts to see how differently players are rated by the media and probably the teams. Each team is looking for something different, trying to get an edge.

Seattle and a few other teams are the ones who could do that. Ultimately, if you are going to gamble that, you better have a deep solid team that doesn't hinge on that player working out immediately or long term. I'm not sure he'll even get to Seattle to be honest, but even if he does, I could see Seattle passing on him and hoping he falls to them again in the third..

Obiken, I am going to ask you to do something here that may go against the grain, because you are the kind of guy who doesn't just swallow every line fed to you, you want to see it first.
In fact I'm going to ask you to do two things that just don't come naturally to you bud.
First, I'm going to ask you to trust that, as a guy who lives in the Fargo North Dakota area, and has actually seen Billy Turner play, every single home game of his entire collegiate career, that I REALLY KNOW what I am talking about when I say that, if that scout's comparison to Ifedi is Billy Turner, then that scout knows ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WHATSOEVER ABOUT BILLY TURNER OR GERMAIN IFEDI!!! Not one single bloody thing!
Those two are so different, so incredibly different. They have almost no similarities AT ALL. They are two VASTLY different players.
Ifedi is a FAR, FAR more athletic player than Turner. They play so differently, and have such radically different styles that hte thought to compare them to each other would never even cross my mind.

Now the second thing I'm going to ask you to do is, completely ignore that idiot scout, and instead listen to the guys like Rob Stanton, (and several others as well), who are saying that Ifedi is going to play day one, and will upgrade the line.

I can totally live with this pick, I get it, would have preferred Kaufusi to me, but this is a solid smart pick.

EDIT: Wow...in hindsight I should have totally seen this pick coming. After the Seahawks had Derrick Henry in for a visit, and "scouted him", someone I know who thought they wouldn't possibly take Henry joked that, "they're probably using this "scouting Henry" thingto scout a D-lineman." At the time I laughed, and agreed it was probably true, and then I thought about it, and said aloud, "Reed maybe?" Then I dismissed it, and totally forgot about it.
I'd bet nearly anything we were right though...

Analysis

Strengths Able to pack plenty of strength into his well-built frame. Plays with bend, leverage and plus core power. Two-gap machine who can eat blocks and come back for more. Rarely beaten at point of attack by single blocks. As an edge setter, grows roots and prevents running lanes from developing in gaps. Has catcher’s mitts for hands. Arms are a little short for the position but his hand quickness into blocker’s frame and instant arm extension make his arm length irrelevant. Engages, controls and slides down the line looking to finish the run before it gets started. Great vision and instincts to find ball quickly. Reads running back’s lane choice and discards blocker with excellent timing. Run down specialist posting tremendous two-year production with 108 tackles despite playing in only 55 percent of the total snaps. Charted with no broken tackles or missed tackles for the entire season. Overcome adversity along road to success at Alabama.

Weaknesses Ineffective pass rusher. Was subbed out for on obvious passing downs. Straight-line pass rusher unable to turn a corner and generate heat inside the pocket. Had just two sacks and sixteen quarterback pressures during his two years with Alabama. Bullrush is missing. Average foot quickness and lacking upfield explosion out of stance to play in a one-gap scheme. His hand work is very average as a pass rusher.

Sure, but we have pass rushers up the ying yang, we were missing the run stopper like Red Bryant or Mebane.

Here's Boylhardt's (thehuddlereport.com) review of Reed

TALENT BOARD ROUND: 1
You don’t find talent like this often in the draft with Jarran’s type of size, strength, quickness, football intelligence and leadership qualities. When you do, you select him as quickly as you can, get your buttocks up to the podium and say his name. Watching film of Jarran and seeing him pass rush from a defensive end position with his powerful, perfectly balanced feet and quick hands is like watching a lion just before it explodes to its prey, taking it down to devour it. He is slick and comes off the line with leverage that defeats his opponent at his first step. He has the agility and balance to turn the corner on his pass rush and sack the quarterback or drop the running back in the back field for a loss. What’s really impressive about Jarran’s play is his ability to play on the nose of the offensive center with 2 gap responsibilities on run plays and totally control the double team against him. Loyal readers of The Huddle Report.com know how highly I value players who can play more than one position and play them all at high levels. They know I will rate that player higher on my talent board than others who project to playing only one position at a high level. Jarran projects to play any position in any style of defensive front, at a Pro Bowl level and in my book that means he’s one of the top players in this draft. Not selecting him will be a big mistake for any team in this draft unless you are looking for a quarterback but once again, that’s just me and I’m sure others will think differently.

Agreed. I just wasn't looking at replacing Mebane, with someone just like him. I figured they'd want someone who can push the pocket.
Still, Mebane freed everyone else up to do what they do, and Reed is EXACTLY that same kind of player.
The pick totally makes sense.

Now the second thing I'm going to ask you to do is, completely ignore that idiot scout, and instead listen to the guys like Rob Stanton, (and several others as well), who are saying that Ifedi is going to play day one, and will upgrade the line

Ok man I will suck it up!!!

Actually I would have happier to take our 2nd round pick 1st and our 1st 2nd, but ok. I'm there.

But since we got both, it doesn't matter which order htey came in.
We've now addressed two of our biggest needs, (replacing Mebane, and o-Line) and we've done it with a freak athlete in Ifredi who has an incredibly high cieling, and a guy who almost EVERYONE projected to go before the 20th pick in the first round, and we got him in the second. A HUGE steal by any measure.
So far, this draft is terrific. I couldn't be happier.

For what it's worth, CBS Sports have Reed ranked as the 21st player in the entire draft.
Looks like a value pick and I would guess the FO thought it was similar last years pick of Lockett.

Their (CBS Sports) comment:

IN OUR VIEW: Country strong with tree trunks for thighs and long arms, Reed is a classic two-gap run-stuffer stout enough to play inside at defensive tackle or outside at end. At 6-3, 311 pounds, Reed has the girth and strength to line up virtually anywhere along the defensive line, making him a fit for 3-4 and 4-3 teams, alike.

COMPARES TO: Dan Williams, DT, Oakland Raiders - Reed and Williams are well-built, nimble nose tackles who are capable of shutting down the run, appealing to various NFL schemes
