Russell Wilson and the Seahawks have agreed to a 4-year, $87.6-million extension, per source.

Never a doubt ;)

Good.
The largest piece of the puzzle is locked up for 4 more years.

I was pretty close to convinced that he wanted to go to FA, even though I thought it was a bad idea, but I'm glad I was wrong.

Now, on to Wagner and others.

I can't believe this! He's so greedy!

Just kidding; seems like a fair deal to me, and sounds like one of the sticking points was length of contract, and the Seahawks shortened their offer by one year. The major hurdle down.

And who knows, maybe they extend Wagner and have a bone or two left to throw to Bennet and Chancellor.

Hallelujah! That calls for a raising of my 12th man flag!

$21.9 M, just north of Worthlessburger and south of Rodgers. IMO that's fair to both sides, considering that Luck's contract will blow this one away.

Your instincts were right on this one, Cbob.

Wagner just tweeted:

I wonder if this means they can't sign him this year.
Next year we should have a lot more room with some of the bigger contracts coming off the board and Dead Cap totals from Harvin, Unger, and Miller of $10 million.

Of course it is. What there really that much doubt that either this year or next they would get a deal done? I know I was NEVER worried, some are more susceptible to fretting, but I hope it is a minority.

The ONLY bad thing, about this contract, from the Hawk's perspective, is that the term is short. 4 years isn't very long, and the next time we go through this, we won't have near the leverage we had this time. Even though Russell said he was prepared to play out his contract, walking away from a deal this season would have meant that he would have left $20M on the table. We won't have that kind of bargaining advantage in 2019.

I heard Wagner's tweet, too. Doesn't sound encouraging.

I'M SOOOO GLAD IT'S DONE!

The biggest concession the Hawks made, IMHO, was that the deal was for 4 rather than 5 years...but you cannot rain on my Russell Wilson parade today. The idea of getting that 5th year was not palatable as Mark Rogers and RW both know the size of the cap will grow and grow. And they also know that all the QBs who get deals done next year and the year after will exceed RW's and he will no longer be the 2nd highest paid QB after the Luck deal gets done. 22 million will feel like a bargain after the 2019 season; still, just glad to have him locked up for at LEAST 5 years. good on us.

The short term of the contract was one of the sticking points, at the Seahawks insistence. Russ wanted a longer term contract. That's in large part why the huge signing bonus:

According to SI’s Peter King, Wilson will receive a $31 million signing bonus as part of the contract. That is a massive number that was only exceeded by Aaron Rodgers ($35M) and Drew Brees ($37M), and matched by Ben Roethlisberger. That is a huge figure that virtually guarantees a large portion of the contract, regardless of any contractual guarantees. A bonus that high means the Seahawks would incur a $12.4 million charge against the salary cap if they release or trade Wilson in 2018, so it really locks him in for a long period of time.

Awesome. Russell won like he usually does. I dont think he wanted to go to free agency at all but he was willing to and set a deadline at which point JS blinked. We will never know but I believe we would have been watching his last year as a Hawk had they allowed him to play for peanuts this season. As for wags Ill say it again. Great player but nowhere near as important as Wilson and has some injury history having missed games every year as a pro. I hope they get it done but if not hes a lot easier to replace than a franchise signal caller.

Contract expires in 2020, that's five seasons by my count ( at least according to sports tracker) I am not positive, but I believe Seattle used the same model they always do. Contract extension, NOT tearing up final year. Could be wrong, but if it does expire when it is being reported to, that means this year's base salary remains (though signing bonus compensates ).

It is technically a 4 year extension at almost $22M per, but in reality they altered this year's base salary down to $700K so it really looks more to me like a 5 year new deal.

Terms for Russell Wilson’s extension: $31M to sign. Base salaries: $700K in ’15, $12.34M in ’16, $12.6M in ’17, $15.5M in ’18, $17M in ’19. - Ian Rapoport

the news keeps calling it 'an extension' which would be This Year + 4 more years. I hope I'm right and that puts it as a 5 year agreement.

Now, we can deal with BobbyW... or start looking at that dreaded Franchise tag again. BtW, he gets $975k this year for being the second best LB in the NFL (according to Russell)

I guess I didn't realize the significance of the term "extension". So he's signed through 2019. That's a little better.

Yeah not sure about that, the only way I can see Wilson having gone for that is if the 60 mil is a real guaranteed.

in fact they contradict themselves

If they are right and it is a 5 year deal which as they say would be 17.8 year then this other statement they make "As the salary cap continues to climb, Wilson won’t last long as the second highest-paid player in the NFL." cannot be true as 17.8 ml is not even close to 2nd highest. SO I do not believe they really know yet.

Thanks for link Bob....those look like pretty good cap friendly numbers no?....by the time 2019 rolls around, 23 million might be like today's 19 million.

I can't believe I didn't stress one bit over this, just knew it would get done...both parties were too smart to let it get into a bad territory.

How exciting is it going to be watching RW3 mature and progress as a QB these next 5 years?

Happy Friday everybody!

I'll admit I was sweatin' this one a bit in terms of getting it done before the season, then figured it must be close with a deadline (today apparently) in place, per RW's recent comment.

It's more than fair, and reflects his worth to the team and franchise.

Would've been nice to see Wags text something congratulatory towards RW first, before expressing a lil frustration with his progress, but I think he'll get his eventually.

As for Kam - his deal was fair at the time, and is hardly pennies now. I think this is about skipping camp as much as anything, but he should still be there.

Beyond that, this is why our F.O. HAS to stay on top of their drafts, and start grooming guys to become eventual starters when we start losing guys to FA.

Excellent outcome - Front Office did a remarkable job in negotiating this deal. Terms seems to be very favorable for the team.

In an interview earlier this week on Pro Football Talk Live with Mike Florio, agent Mark Rodgers said quarterback Russell Wilson, his client, took less money so the Seattle Seahawks could potentially sign middle linebacker Bobby Wagner.

Does anyone truly expect his agent to say anything to the contrary? It's like using your mother as a character reference.

Don't get me wrong, Russell is still my favorite Seahawk and I hate sounding so negative, but I have a hard time welling up crocodile tears based on the kind hearted generosity of someone who just signed the 2nd richest contract in all of football.

I don't think anyone is trying to elicit your tears, I think this is just an agent saying if his guy had been willing to to force the deal to Free Agency as he was advised to do he could have gotten him to that $100M mark.

He's a business man, he's going to have other clients that are going to want to push that limit, he doesn't want to lose their potential business.

Hats off to Russel if he truly did trump his agent instead of waiting another year for free agency. It sounds like the front office wasn't going to budge. And, yeah, I can see this being post-deal spin by the agent to put himself in a positive light.

I'm gratified to know that you weren't targeting my soft heartedness. :)

Rogers is a business man that is paid by his client to represent him, and that includes enhancing his client's public image as doing so increases his net worth. Even if he thought differently, Rogers would never say anything remotely negative about his client just as Aaron Hernandez's attorney won't say anything negative about him. Russell is Roger's meal ticket.

And as far as taking my hat off to honor Russell for signing this year rather than waiting until next year and test free agency, he had one helluva big monetary incentive to sign this season, to the tune of over $20 million dollars. It would be very difficult to sign a contract next season that would make up for that lost $20M that he would have had to walk away from in order to reach free agency, not to mention the risks involved in waiting.
