Seahawks reportedly make huge contract offer to Russell Wils

Postby Anthony » Sat Jul 25, 2015 4:10 pm

Okay this only proves the media are clueless as was MH

http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/sea ... ar-AAduYFb

Ron Clements, Sporting News said "The Seahawks have offered quarterback Russell Wilson a contract offer worth $21 million per year, according to Pro Football Talk."

"Word on the NFL grapevine is that the Seahawks have offered a package worth nearly $21 million per year, with significant guaranteed money. "

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/20 ... -deadline/

So it has been posted were other media site said he was offered 4 years 87 mil which is way more than nearly 21 mil a year so seems as we have guessed no one has a clue what is really happening to include MH.

Add to that PFT said nearly 21 mil but Sporting news takes that and says worth 21 mil. Last I checked near 21 mil is not 21 mil

then add "The two sides have opted for silence regarding any discussions that are occurring. " but they then say "Whatever the current offer, Wilson, through agent Mark Rodgers, wants more." if the 2 sides have remained silent then how do they know what Wilson wants, Wait it must be the "NFL Grapevine" really, more like since we do not know lets make it up.

Anthony,

Give it to me....your gut feeling....does a deal get done by Thursday night? Or does RW3 play out the 2015 season without an extension?

Dude I wish I knew there is so much misinformation out there it is tough to know. I hope so, I truly do. Logic says it should as it makes to much sense of both sides. But logic may not be what rules the day here and without knowing what is really being offered I do not know.

C'mon!..ya can't sit on the fence.... :D

I say it gets done, I have remained optimistic the entire time.

My guess is 5 years....$21.5 million a year....$107, 500 total....50% guaranteed ($53,750,000)

Of course I know nothing about contract negotiations, so my numbers might be completely wacked.

Fingers crossed it gets done by Thursday and it doesn't hamstring the team. Not sure if my numbers above would do that?

"The size of Cam Newton's contract extension with the Panthers — reportedly $103.8 million over five years, $60 million guaranteed,"

Really think only 53.7 guaranteed since Newton got 60? I think that is the hold up the guarantees.

Where I looked, it said only $41 million (39.5%) of Newton's contract was guaranteed.

I went with 50% cause Aaron Rodgers contract had 49.1% guaranteed, the highest percentage among QB's making over $18 million a year.

Sorry but again, not to usurp C-bob's position, but its not a verifiable source. Ok its Pro Football talk, it "might" be accurate but it could very well not be.

If true, I wouldn't call it a "huge" contract offer as it's north of QB's like Cam Newton and Tannehill but south of Rodgers and Worthlessburger.

If that is the case, Russel Wilson isn't being slighted in the least. Man, sure would be nice to see this resolved.

Not usurpation Obi, just reinforcement.

It's something I really hate about internet news reporting: I person says it, in this case as "word on the grapevine" (from the original author), and then it gets reported by everybody else as that first person having "reported" it, dropping the "word on the grapevine" qualifier.

So now all of the sudden the first person's speculation is being reported looking like fact because the second and third level writers feel as though they've protected their own credibility by citing the first level speculator as their source. It's really kind of an insidious internet end around of the traditional integrity of the press.

It's kind of like that game we played as kids (telephone game?) where one person would whisper something to the next and by the time it got to the last kid it was completely different from the original statement.

My guess is he goes to Free Agency and we tag him next year but make a deal before next TC.
Guess, 5 years $125 million with $75 million guaranteed.
In 3 years it will look like a great deal for each side.
Okung and Irvin will both not re-sign and Lynch will retire after this year which frees up nearly 30 million from today's CAP figures.
If Lynch stays on, it still provides $18 million in room (over this years CAP).
According to Spotrac.com.

Cbob that's why Chuck Powell on KJR refuses to discuss this because its a vacuum of information and all speculation. I believe the IF there is an impasse, its over the guaranteed money.
Unlike the NBA, an NFL contract doesn't mean much. You have to make the team and they can cut you almost anytime.
This will be Seattle's last year for a long time as a title contender. PC is done in 2 years, (I think) Okung, Bennett, and Irvin will probably be gone. IF RW leaves we are done.

Yea, me, too, Mack.

The one good thing about breaking off negotiations if a deal hasn't been struck by training camp is that it will put a bit of a damper on this speculative reporting. Nevertheless, if we don't get a deal done here in a few days, it's going to be a significant distraction this season.

Good analogy to the speculative reporting with the game we used to play about repeating stories. In junior high we had a teacher once that challenged the classroom with early recess as a reward for success if we could whisper a 25 word or so story person-by-person and end up with exactly the same statement as the original. As hard as we tried, we could never get it to come out the same.

well we might know a little more

Russell Wilson hasn't turned down a Seahawks deal outright

"Earlier on Saturday, a report from Pro Football Talk pegged an offer by the Seahawks at $21 million per year. While that number is essentially accurate, going inside the numbers compared to other quarterback deals tell more of the story.

For instance, the Panthers gave Cam Newton $30 million cash up front in his new extension. By contrast, sources familiar with the situation say Wilson would make (under the latest offer) below $20 million cash up front. Those in Seattle say there are significant guarantees, but most of the guarantees are simply for injury only."

If true then the guarantees are the issue and the hawks are being tight wads.

Right IF its true. Newton's salary should be the base, and they are being tight wads. The terrible IF's compound as Churchill said.

Agreed and we may never know the truth but this possibility sure does take some of the Wilson is being greedy no doubt thought off the table as if true and we can s ay it is as true as any other media numbers it shows Wilson is not the problem but the FO and Wilson is not being un realistic.

Wilson should not make less than Cam Newton, no way. JS is being an ass. He already got his hometown discount. It was called 2012 thru 2014. Now its time to pony up. I swear they are going to F it up....

RW's agent is in Seattle and they will deal the next couple of days, even Cbob would agree on that. I think they get it done by Friday, and I am usually the pessimist of the group.

I would argue that Wilsons pay was by no means a home town discount. It was a third round pick rookie contract that was what it was and no one could do anything about it, until now. I'm not arguing for a hometown discount though, just a fair deal for both parties. If he wants more then I guess he hits the market. :(

HT, no one, and I mean NO ONE, has ever said that RW doesn't deserve a raise. So what's fair? You have to start with Cam Newton's deal and work up. IS Cam Newton a better Qb than RW?? uuuuuuuhhhhhhh NO! So then you have to ask is he better than AR? No. It shouldn't be that hard to meet In the middle, unless its the quarantined part of the money. ITs the only thing that makes sense, unless one side or another is stupid.

The fact that Russ' agent is in town means to me (admittedly hopefully) that the negotiations are about to wrap up. They've had their preliminary meetings and sent position sheets and put offers on the table, but none of that requires Rogers' actual presence. He's finally coming to town IMO to put a bow on it and have a press conference with all parties present.

To be a pessimist he might be in town to see if they can surmount the obstacle(s) that is stymieing negotiations prior to the stated deadline of Training Camp.
One last try, if you wish.

Rapoport was on ESPN this AM saying almost no headway has been made between the sides, and that a deal wasn't likely before training camp. I still think it gets done. I don't think they are as far apart as everybody is saying. Gonna be like a 4 year extension. 90 mil with 60 mil in guarantees. Book it.

I'm not sure why he'd have to come to town for that.

But if you really want to be a pessimist, he could be coming to town for something completely unrelated to the RW contract, like Seafair.

Most deals overcoming impasses occur when the two sides get together, not over the phone.
That is, unless they are far too far apart on many issues.
Sometimes even getting together doesn't result in an agreement if one or both sides are entrenched in their positions.

Last week I was in the "it won't get done" camp. This week, I have changed my position. 1.5 or 21.5 million? There is just NO way for RW to make up the gap in future earnings if he plays for 1.5 this year. That and the reality that injuries happen - I think he signs and we are all happy.......everyone except Mebane who is the casualty of Wilson and Wags signing their deals.

The issue is not the salary but the guarantees. They are locked thanks to their own short sigthedness to how much they can give him up front so all there is, is guarantees. Wilson will want more than Newton, so far reports are they have not offered that. Newton got 60 mil guaranteed

$60 million guaranteed
