To Tag or Not To Tag

So were coming up on the F-Tag deadline so I thought I would start a thread to update who is tagged and who isn't and what that might mean for the Hawks. So far I have heard Houston (KC OLB) has been tagged. Rumor is both Dez and D Thomas are going to get the tag. I read a rumor last week that the Hawks were going pursue Thomas if he hit the market (although I don't think anybody really knows what the Hawks are going to do).

As far as Suh goes I don't think there is any way the Lions are going to be able to use it on him. 26 mil is just too big a hit. He will get an opportunity to cash in on the FA market.

Detroit has made it official, they will not tag Suh. Five more days and we can reach out to him, eight more days until he can officially sign with a new team.

The interesting thing is we are in a position to actually make a play for a tagged player as we only need a few spots to shore up.
I believe the compensation is 2 1st round picks - if we are selecting near 30 the next 2 years, it isn't as bad as giving them up when drafting at around 16.

I'm not necessarily advocating for doing this, but winning does bring more options into play.

Looks like Dez and D Thomas both officially got the tag. Not a big surprise but too bad because at the very least they would have added to what could have been (and still is in a lot of ways) an extremely good FA WR class and possibly could have driven down the price of some of the other WR's.

If a team like us or the Pats signed Bryant, it might not be that bad of a hit considering any player we get at 31 this year and probably 25 - 32 next year won't be of the caliber of Bryant.
As well, we do our best drafting in the middle rounds.
He could bring a whole different look to our Offense which would also help our run game.

I am pretty sure you can't sign a player who has been F-Tagged at all. The 2 #1 picks compensation is if you were to sign a player who has been given the T-tag. There are also other compensation that might have to be given up if you were to sign other RFA, like if we were to put a 2nd round tender on Kearse and another team signed him we would get their 2nd round pick.

This draft class has quite a few big, talented wide outs, so spending big bucks on a free agent seems less likely. Not that I wouldn't love to, but there are some options. And, while, often receivers take some time to adjust to the NFL, last year produced some really good ones, and the pundits (are they ever wrong? ) are saying that this class is nearly as good. I don't see any good reason to be fooling around with tagged players, paying a severe penalty (even a late first is a value), when there are other options available.

GMs are wrong more than 50% of the time.

So why is it such a bad thing if "pundits" are wrong more than 50% of the time.

Hell, we can take it further and say that only 1 GM was stupid enough to trade a bunch of picks and give a huge contract to a CFL-quality player (harvin). Does that mean Schneider is an idiot? No, it just means everyone makes mistakes.

No one should laugh at "pundits" unless you have tracked all your predictions (and all of theirs) and you have done significantly better. Its easy to forget when other people are right or when you are wrong.

Trust me, the people that you are laughing at are right way more than you.

A question to consider is would 2 players taken late in the first be guaranteed to be of the quality of a player like Bryant?
Obviously not, so the greater certainty of improving your team is via a trade of picks for a young player at a position of need and with giving up the equivalent of (talent wise) 2 early 2nd rounders it sounds much better than if we were selecting in the mid or early rounds.
If the Cowboys decide to match, then it puts them in a bind financially thus possibly mitigating their growth as a team.
