This topic was discussed a long time ago and didn't have any legs... now, it comes back as a National story. It really bothers me, but with his success, what can you do? Is he loyal to the Seahawks? Hard to know, but the story came out of Green Bay, but attributes John, himself, as the source. That's wild.

what a month. One yard, Marshawn, RW & Tate and now this. Hard to believe how fast the perception can change.

It shouldn't surprise anyone that Schneider has an out in his contract. He's smart, and smart people always keep their options open. IMO it's nothing to worry about.

Doesn't bother me a bit. They're his team from boyhood, we're his job.

If I were the GM of the packers, and doing the best job in the league, I'd wish I had a clause allowing me to GM the Seahawks if the job were offered.

It doesn't really bother me either. I am glad we get to have him for as long as we do. He has helped bring us at least 1 SB. Hopefully he will be here a long time but if not he has been the best GM the Seahawks have ever had.

He has a really good relationship with Pete, so I doubt he would move until Pete retires or if there is a contract impasse.

And with Paul Allen controlling the purse strings, you can bet that if it's a matter of money, he will spare no expense in bringing him back.

Also, there's no telling where his roots lie right now. Home is where you make it and Seattle is about as good as it gets, in my opinion. Though this clause was entered into his contract when he came to Seattle, only he knows if he'd actually use it if the opportunity presented itself to move back to Green Bay. I would not be surprised if in such a situation, John Schneider decided to stay in Seattle. Things change. In addition, I have no doubt about his commitment to our team, the organization, and to the fans as long as he is here. Incredible GM ... hope he's with our team for several years to come.

I was fully aware that the article did not state JS was or is thinking of leaving or even if he would leave, given the chance. That's not the point.

The part that bothers me IS the fact that at any time he could leave, and that does mean next week, next month, next year, while he's under contract with the Seahawks. I've signed and approved many personal services contracts and I've never heard of a out clause that allows a top manager to go to the 'enemy'... in fact it's typically the opposite. If you have a contract and want out, more often you have a 'non-compete' clause written in. This is very unusual. He has an inordinate amount of team information. No different then if he was a partner in a law firm or a top real estate broker.

To those that don't think he ever would use it, he obviously wrote it into the new contract, and the team agreed to it, so he IS thinking about it.

And don't assume it wouldn't happen. Stranger things have happened. No one knows what Ted Thompson is thinking right now. Hell, after that last game maybe he's thinking of an exit strategy.

It means he WAS thinking about it (i.e., at the time of signing). It doesn't mean he IS thinking about it. And as far as it being an unusual contract clause, I say good for him that he wasn't afraid to state his conditions up front, take him or leave him. Fortunately, we took him.

He can't leave unless the Packer's GM job opens up. This is the busiest time of the year for a GM, so you would think that if Thompson was going to hang it up, he would have done it shortly after the end of the playoffs. It certainly wouldn't be advantageous to a team to change GM's this time of year. But you're right, you never know.

And as SBB pointed out, that clause was inserted by Schneider a long time ago, long before we became a perennial SB contender. Even if the Packers job does open up, and there is no indication that it may, Schneider might not want to leave his current job.

Beast could retire. Pete Carroll could suddenly quit and go back to the college ranks. Or he could announce his own retirement...he turns 64 this September and is the 2nd oldest active HC in the league. Russell Wilson could turn down our best offer, play out his contract, then become a free agent next season. There's a lot of things that could happen to this team. But it ain't worth worrying about.

Nothing to worry about here - He loves his home town - he loves the hometown team that took a chance on a punk kid with no experience and no connections. I kinda understand why Schneider (or any human being) would have some loyalties to their hometown team and first employer who gave them their break. If fact I would think it would be weird if a person did not.

So far based on John's first five years here .....I don't think his love of Green Bay and the Packers have affected his job performance too much.......

If nothing else, he's set the bar high, and I think this franchise is over settling for GM's along the likes of Ruskell anyway.

Seattle is perhaps the most desirable place for anyone associated with the NFL to practice their trade, whether it be a player, a head coach, or a GM. An owner with deep pockets (deepest by far in the league) with a hands off attitude, a solid fan base with one of the best venues in the league, a desirable area in which to live, no state income tax... am I missing anything?
