Jake Locker

Obi can tell you how much flak I took over Jake Locker in the old PI Husky forum. I always thought that he was over rated, a highly inaccurate quarterback with a run first mentality when his first read wasn't there. But I didn't see his being injury prone, even though he sustained more than his fair share of injuries while at Udub. He's had ample opportunity with the Titans but even when he's been healthy, he's been very inconsistent, with accuracy issues still a nagging problem. I was against drafting him, at least in the first round, due in part that because of his loyal Husky following, he'd be called on to start the second his predecessor threw an interception. I don't think there's anyone on the planet that in retrospect feel that was it was a bad decision for us not to draft Jake considering who we ended up with.

Even if the Titans don't take Mariota or Winston at #2, they appear to have thrown in the towel on Jake and have made no attempts to resign him, opting to go with a no name Zach Mettenberger over Jake. Does Jake get another shot at a starting job? If not, would he be a viable option for him to come in here and compete with TJack for a back-up job?

IMO Jake will get a shot at another starting job. The quarterback class is very thin this year once you get past the top two and there's still a lot of QB hungry teams out there that would rather not waste a high draft pick on a quarterback. So Jake to the Jets? The Cards?

I too was against drafting Locker, and too many homers were obsessed with thw idea of going from UW to Seahawks.

I don't see why Locker wouldn't be given a chance to at least compete for a starting job somewhere else, as it seems most QBs get a 2nd chance with a different team. As for him actually succeeding, I don't see it happening.

He would be an intriguing choice as a backup but I don't see things lining up that way...at least not yet.

I didn't want the Hawks to draft him either, although I thought he had a chance at being a successful pro. IMO he was much too mechanical after Sark got there (which wasn't necessarily a bad thing as he was really bad before Sark got ahold of him) for me to want us to draft him. He didn't go through his reads at all and was a system qb. He had a little success in Tennessee when he didn't have to go through his progressions and he had a running game. I see him as more of a backup and would welcome the chance here. Remember TJ is a FA this offseason and probably could get more somewhere else. Also, I still don't see why a QB needy team wouldn't give him a chance. He has played well in the pre-season for the Hawks the past 2 years and played decent for them the year he started (remember he had a torn peck most of that season). I would love for TJ to be back but not at much more than he played for last year (1.3 mil or so).

I wasn't sure if we should have taken him.
I think he would have done better in a run first Offense in order to grow while not having to win games by himself.
It would mean a team who is good at both run and pass blocking, though so he wouldn't have done so well with our OL.

Jackson isn't signed so his competition would be at this point Daniels, not Jackson. That said, I was NEVER enamored with Jake, even when he was with U-dub, so I wouldn't be for them signing him, even at a serious discount. The man has always had issues reading defenses, and throwing the ball with any accuracy, so I hope they find another to fill that role or give Daniels a real shot at manning it.

He'll get a shot somewhere, and would be better off staying in the AFC.

I always liked the kid. In 2013 it looked like he was turning the corner with his Titans at 3 and 1 but the injury bug bit him again, twice in that season. Now I just dont think I would want my Hawks eggs in that basket. If he cant stay on the field he cant improve. Seattle has better options including the guys they had here last year. With Wilson under center I feel like the back up is about as necessary as tits on a boar pig anyway.

Still I wish Locker well and think he could have success if he could just get and stay healthy. I see him getting picked up by a QB poor team and maybe given a shot to compete but it will be his last opportunity if he gets it at all.

If he decides he wants to continue his career, he could benefit from being a backup so he can fully heal and take the time to really learn about being a QB without the pressure to carry the team. He might be one of those players that could play well for a few games, but not the entire season.

IMO he will start for a bad team and backup for a good team.

Interesting. He also has a baseball option. If I recall, the Angels signed him to a contract and still maintain the rights to him. He could also consider changing positions. He's a heck of an athlete. There were a number of games in college where he was the fastest player on the field.

Jake wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed, either, scoring a 20 on the Wonderlic. Remember when someone at Sports Illustrated was trumpeting a quarterback success predictor model 26-27-60? 26 on the Wonderlic, 27 starts in college, and a 60% career completion percentage. Jake only hit on one of those. It would be interesting to go back a few years and see how that model worked.
