Wollen on the block?

According to Ian Rappaport he could be trade bait before the trade deadline ends.

Makes sense to me. Just seems like he isn't a "Mike Macdonald" guy. I think Riq is soft physically and mentally. Seems to have alot of talent.

With the emergence of Jobe and Kendrick and having Spoon already, this rumour has legs IMO.

PFF has him ranked 100th out of 102 ranked cornerbacks, and for those of you who criticize PFF's grading system, that one certainly meets the eye test.

He's the weak link in our secondary, and if someone is stupid enough to give us a conditional 7th round pick for him then I'm all for it. Heck, I wanted to cut him at the start of the year, so getting something, anything, for him would be a huge bonus.

Like 86 alluded to, Kendrick and Jobe make it easier to swallow even if he goes to another team and becomes an All Pro.
Sometimes the schemes don't fit the players natural gifts and it's been said MacDonald's Defenses are complicated so a change for him might help his career.

There's a lot more to Woolen's problems than not fitting a scheme. He was benched by Pete for sloppy tackling, benched by Mac for lack of effort. I can remember a specific play in the Niners game where he was in the perfect position for an interception but whiffed.

He is supremely physically talented, and for that reason alone, a team might be willing to cough up a late round draft pick for him. But I can't see anyone offering up anything more than a 5th rounder.

If some team is willing to give us anything for him, I'd take it. I just can't see who would.

Riq don't have that dog in him. You gotta have a vicious dog in you to play CB well. That's an aggressive position on an island.

Well, this year the injury bug is rampant across the NFL, and one position group that has been hit the hardest has been the secondary. Many teams are missing 3 to 4 starters per team. As much as I would want Riq gone, cutting him would be a dumb decision, as the Cardinals would sign him right away, as they are down 4 DBs, and 2 of them are starters.

A team that would be a good trade candidate is the Steelers. They are missing so many players on defense, and need help in the secondary. They are a non-conference team, and they are sitting at 3-1. Their division is very weak, with the Bengals and Browns being a disaster, and the Ravens are now one of the worst defensive teams in the league, sitting at 1-3. I can see Tomlin and the Steelers doing what they can on borrowed time with Aaron Rodgers to steal this division this season and make a run.

Riq's rookie season is a fluke in my opinion. Had he not had such an impact in his rookie season he would have been long gone. Ever since that season, teams have exploited his weaknesses, and will continue to do so.

Agreed. His rookie season was phenomenal.

It's just a rumor and I don't have a source, but the word is that Riq really likes the weed. If that's true and he likes it a lot, it would explain a lot.

Woolen is far too damaging to this teams progress. He just doesn't get it.

I'd be shocked if anyone trades for him, outside of maybe a team taking a flyer for a late round pick.

Plenty of people like the weed, probably more people than you can imagine. They play football well still. Riq's just not that good and isn't improving. I doubt if he quit smoking weed if he is doing so, it would change.

Although I've never bought any weed myself and only smoked it a couple times at parties in college, I'm very well acquainted with it and its effects. It's not a harmless drug. If Woolen is smoking a lot of it, it can't help but have a detrimental effect on his play.

I can remember when Percy Harvin used to come to team meetings smelling of the stuff, got pulled over smoking it, was suspended in college for it, et al. I'm certainly not making accusations as it's just a random rumor I heard, but if he's smoking a lot of it, it's a problem.

Yeah, I doubt that anyone offers up anything higher than a 5th rounder. But then again, Woolen has played for just one team in his NFL career, and given his off the chart's physical skills, it wouldn't be a huge surprise if a team felt that a change of scenery could turn him around.

It's less damaging than alcohol. I'm sure tons of people drink in the NFL. I don't hear you talking about people that drink. Alcohol is a more toxic drug with a higher degree of impairment for overuse.

Weed use has nothing to do with play performance unless he's smoking on the sidelines. If drug use caused impaired performance, 90s Cowboys wouldn't have won a Super Bowl, much less three.

Riq's just not a great player. No point trying to introduce this 30s and 40s idea of what weed smoking does to people. That Reefer Madness film was pure rubbish. Alcohol is far worse and I bet most of the NFL drinks. Lawrence Taylor used to play on harder drugs than weed.

Radio people said we gotta better chance of a good comp pick letting him walk at the end of the year.

I never said that weed was worse than alcohol. I said that it isn't harmless.

I lost a stepson to marijuana use, died when he was 33. He was a pot head all his life, rarely touched alcohol. He was extracting the oil out of it, because its supposedly much stronger and results in a more intense 'high'. It caused him to have seizures. One morning, his roommate found him dead on the bathroom floor. So please, don't try to tell me that the stuff is harmless. Like any other substance, if it's abused, it can be lethal.

Yeah, I remember the jokes about Lawrence Taylor: Q: What do Lawrence Taylor and Kitty Dukakis (Presidential candidate Michael Dukakis's wife) have in common? A: They both like to blow a little dope.

That's more of a roll of the dice. There're no hard and fast rules about comp picks. Plus, we wouldn't have any control over where he signs. We don't want former players going to a division rival. If we get any offer, even a 7th rounder, I'd jump on it like a chicken on a June bug.

It sounds like Woolen might finally be getting benched:

Question: Has Derion Kendrick earned the right to compete for the nickel spot, with Spoon outside?

Mike Macdonald: “Yeah.”

FYI Kendrick is currently PFF's #1 ranked CB while Woolen is ranked 100th out of 102 ranked corners.
