I remind you guys that are defending him that this is the last year of his rookie contract, and it's blatantly obvious that he is not a good fit for this system (See the link in Oly's post). And that's before we consider his injury history. If we don't plan on re-signing him next year, likely to an overvalued contract, the smart move would be to trade him if a decent offer is made. It's better than letting him walk.
The trading deadline is Nov. 11th. There's a good chance that they'll be a team or two that's desperate for a running back by then and might be willing to overpay for Walker.

How much will he cost to keep and would trading him bring more in return than a compensatory pick (and what round be expected if he was not re-signed)? Is letting him go meaning they can make up his productivity by other means?
There are probably other considerations as well.

It depends on what's offered, where we are at the moment, what the RB class coming out of college looks like, our confidence in Charbs, and so on.
If someone offers up a #2 for him, I'm jumping on it like a chicken on a June bug. If it's a 7th rounder, no way, Jose. But we definitely don't close the door simply because he had one good game after a horrible one.

4XPIPS wrote:I disagree; this idea of entertaining offers right now isn't logical. The first game, I primarily base his low production on basic, predictable play calling and K9's first real action of the season. I do think he shares some of the blame, but K9 is in his prime and has that home run hitting ability.
3rd and Goal, from the 19-yard line! We are running the ball to bleed the clock and position for a FG, and what does K9 do.. he clutches it with a closing TD. Now we can argue that it was against a very depleted Steelers defense, but the top tailbacks have a born instinct to finish strong.
We can never have enough healthy tailbacks, and as much as I love Zach as well, both need to stay all season, and kick any idea of trading them before the trade deadline. If we go 1-6 before the trade deadline, then maybe throw the idea out. The biggest decision for him will be around the end of the year, and if he even stays healthy all season, which I predict he will miss a few games.
