Hawks vs. Packers: Final Preseason Game

Postby River Dog » Fri Aug 22, 2025 5:39 am

We'll get a good look at Jalen Milroe as he's supposed to play the entire game:

Following Thursday’s joint scrimmage in Green Bay, Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald told reporters that third-round rookie quarterback Jalen Milroe will not only start on Saturday, he’ll be getting all of the reps.

FYI kickoff is set for Saturday 8/23 at 1PM Pacific Time and can be seen live on NFL Network as well as local Fox television stations.

I don't think any starters are going to play, either but it will be good to see Milroe for an extended period.
If he can limit the downside plays, he could be a real threat. If the starters don't play it will give us an idea of which players might be on the bubble. Some might surprise us if they are veterans.
I'm curious to see if the 2nd and 3rd string OL plays well together just like the starters did the first 2 pre-season games.

Most of the starters won't play much if at all, so there's not a lot to watch except for Milroe. I haven't seen him play at all or if I have, nothing in particular sticks out about him, so it will be a good introduction for me.

Preseason games never used to be like this. It used to be that the starters would all play at least the first quarter, sometimes longer. And that was back when there were 4-6 preseason games. Here we are over two weeks before our first regular season game, and nearly all the starters will be sitting.

There's too much invested and at stake to risk playing the starters in a meaningless game. We used to occasionally hear of a starter getting injured because someone deep in the depth chart wanted to stand out so as to be noticed.
I want to see the OL work as a functioning unit even if they are 2nd stringers. It gives us (me) hope that there is a structure to their responsibilities and that they can play freely within it.

Oh, I understand the reasoning and at least partially agree with how teams handle it. I was just noting how it has changed over the past 10-15 years. The game hasn't gotten any more injury prone from what it was back then.

Yeah, the game sucked. I quit watching at halftime. Milroe looked horrible, 13-24 passing for just 148 yards, lost 3 fumbles. Preseason game or not, that's simply not acceptable. I'm sure glad that this was just a preseason game. Defense looked OK and the running game was decent although nearly half of 136 yards rushing yards came on one play.

I would have much rather lost a game like that in the first preseason game rather than the last. You don't want to end your training camp with such a bad performance.

The Packers were playing some of their 1st stringers early on Defense, but for the most part our 2nd tier players weren't as good as them.
This was a good lesson for Milroe. He got a lot of snaps and saw a lot of pressure and it was good for mgmt of the Seahawks to evaluate how far he has to go and whether next year they should go after another QB in the draft.
I just hope we got out of there without any major injuries.

Nice little expectation reset.

I'm ready for the real deal now.

I don't mind the slow progress in the passing game as NFL defenses run complex schemes and it takes some time to figure them out. The fumbling is really unacceptable. NFL QBs cannot afford fumbles and NFL defenses go after the ball when making the tackle or sack as they are trained to do, really viciously. This ain't college Milroe, they coming for that ball like a pack of wild dogs. He has to learn to protect it.

Agreed. You can explain a poor passing effort out of a rookie, having to read the defense, learning the offense and getting familiar with his teammates, etc. But there's no excuse for the fumbles, especially the ones that Milroe committed. Now, I'm afraid to see him coming in on short yardage situations whereas before, I was looking forward to it, thinking that was going to be one of the differences between last year's offense and this one.

And like Cbob said, it's an expectation reset. I'm ready for the regular season but don't like having to wait 2 weeks for it. I guess they don't want to take Labor Day weekend away from baseball.

Milroe's miserable performance made me appreciate Locke. There is no question that in my mind that Locke is more game ready. There still may be a question as to whether Darnold or Locke should be the starter, however. We saw little of either in preseason but what we did see did not show much differential.

The starting job is Darnold's, and from what I've heard, he's been looking pretty good in practice. I don't think there's any question that he's the one we'll see under center. He should be a slight upgrade from what we had with Geno.

Success or failure will depend largely upon the performance of the OL. I like the direction they've been going in and I like the Offense that Kubiak is installing but ultimately if they can't block effectively the QB performance will suffer.

One of the more interesting stories will be who gets the call as the #1 RB, K9 or Charbonnet. K9 has been nursing a sore foot...surprise surprise...so don't be surprised if we see more of Charbs.

I've read a couple of reports that said the coaching staff liked Charbonnet a lot and were very comfortable starting him over Walker. Sometimes a player's a better match for a system even if they are perhaps a little less talented.

every season the torch gets passed... its K9, and prior to that it was Dee Eskridge, and before that it was Rashaad Penny, and before that it was CJ Prosise. It wouldn't be a Seahawks roster if we didn't have an offensive player often hurt.
