IMHO that is a small reason, people thought they were racist because that not many Black coaches have been given an opportunity. There is 0 reason that Eric Bienemy should not have had a coaching job along time ago, and he is not the only one. No Coach in the NFL gets more than a year IF it goes totally south, you know that. Its still a white good ole boy club. My question to you and all the site members, is why would a black coach turn down the Bronco job and take the Texan job, I do not get that one.
My context was specifically for Houston. They fired Culley after he had started to make headway with a dysfunctional team, then hired Smith and fired him after they again showed some promise and were competitive against
some very good teams, both after 1 year. This 6 year contract shows a real commitment to the new coach - and should give him the time to actually implement his program. And that's been some of the problem in the NFL,
namely that coaches of color don't just not get the opportunity, but for the most part have had a shorter leash before removal. Certainly there are the Hackett and Meyer types but it's not usually true for white coaches.
