Stroud declares for the draft

Postby govandals » Mon Jan 16, 2023 10:16 am

ESPN reporting CJ Stroud officially entering the draft. Good news for those of us who want a QB at #5 whether its him or pushing the other QB options down the board.

Yeah, I really liked what I saw of Stroud in that playoff game vs. TCU. He's a great athlete, good size, good arm strength, manages the pocket well, throws the ball on a line and on target. I'd love it if he fell to us, but I think he's gone by the time our pick rolls around.

But he could push Levis down to us.

Being from Kentucky, you're on one heck of a lot better position to comment on Levis than I am. I saw him just once, vs. Florida early in the season, and wasn't that impressed. But Schneider seems to have a pretty good eye for QB's, so if he decides to pull the trigger on him, I'm good with it.

Perhaps more it's more impressive, but Stroud didn't play TCU in the playoffs; he played Georgia. Went shot for shot with UGA's offense and showed a lot of mobility in and out of the pocket that he hadn't had to during the season. I'm thinking he and Ohio State would have destroyed TCU had they played.

Yes, my mistake. Thanks for the correction. Obviously, Georgia had a MUCH better defense than TCU. And I agree, the real NC game was between Georgia and Ohio State.

That’s team against team though.
You can’t make this kind of decision based on one game unless you’ve seen him for at least one season and it’s the deciding factor.
Until the Georgia game he hadn’t had to show much mobility and throw off of it, that’s how good his supporting cast was.
But he did do well in that one game, for certain. Like all QBs in this draft he has a lot of development required and there are no Peyton Mannings this year. So the question is how high should he be drafted? I would think he should be a top 5 but I don’t think he’s the best to start right away. He needs to go to a team that is able to sit him for a while. He’s got the physical tools but he’s
lacking in experience in a Pro style Offense. He had the advantage of superior talent and limited pass routes along with a dominating OL going against simple defenses relative to what he will see at the next level.
He’s got a very high ceiling but in the wrong situation he could have a very low floor.
Seattle would be the perfect place for him as he could sit for a year and refine his talents, but I doubt he lasts until #5.

Yeah I think Stroud is gone before we pick, which means somebody else will be pushed down to us. If stroud is still there when we pick then that's also good news for us!

It will be interesting to see the order that the QBs are taken.
Houston really needs to hit a home run and Indy is champing at the bit to get a Franchise QB.
The Raiders, Falcons, and Panthers all need an upgrade at QB - they draft at 7, 8, and 9.
Would we pull the trigger with a small trade down? Maybe if the compensation is good enough.
There are so many different things that can happen when drafting early that it's going to be really interesting.
