Tariq Woolen: The Freak

Postby Aseahawkfan » Tue Oct 11, 2022 5:30 pm

Who would have thought they would have found another 5th round CB who may well turn out to be better than Sherm. Right now he's like Sherm with more speed and athleticism.

This guy is unreal. https://www.fieldgulls.com/2022/10/11/23398123/nfl-seattle-seahawks-tariq-woolen-interceptions-defensive-rookie-of-the-year

If we had a pass rush, not even sure what his pick upside is. I imagine teams will stop throwing at him soon.

Freakish speed. Good hands. Incredible ability to mirror a receiver's route. Just ridiculous.

I like him, too. He's been one of the few bright spots on our defense. Give him a couple of years' experience and he'll be a Pro Bowler. Another good draft pick. This has proven to be our best draft in years.

He, so far, is as big a hit as Sherm. Same round too!

As far as I'm concerned, he's the frontrunner for DROTY. Not only does he share same round draft status as Sherm and the length, I think it's both of their past as wide receivers that are a big part of both of their success. On that pick 6 that Goff threw, the receiver was wide open by NFL standards with Woolen a couple steps behind on the cross...no other DB could close so much gap in such short a time. Cheat code for sure.

He's not going to get DROTY playing for the 32nd ranked defense in the league.

If he can get to the point where he begins to understand the game like Sherman did then he will be a perennial All Pro.
So much talent but it's what's between his ears like all things that will make the difference.

Woolen is making this look way too easy. You can't even throw over this dude. You can't throw in front him. He can outrun most receivers mirroring their routes. He can outjump them. He has great hands. The day we get a pass rush, he gets another pick. Ridiculous.

First time in franchise history that a player has had 4 INT's in 4 straight games.

Not quite. Brandon Browner had 5 INT's in 4 games in 2011: https://www.statmuse.com/nfl/player/bra ... nYear=2011

Ahh, thanks for the correction. I guess I read the graphic on the TV wrong. That's what I get for multitasking between the Red Zone and the Hawks game on Fox. :D

It's interesting how his profile and now early career is paralleling Sherman.
Similar size
5th round picks (Woolen 153, Sherman 154)
Drafted by Seattle
College WR converted to CB
Forced into action by injury to starter
Has 3 INT's (Sherman had 4) and will probably get a few more unless teams start to avoid him.

The biggest difference is speed. Sherman was a sloth compared to Woolen. Of course, Sherm had some intangibles that can't be measured.

True.
Sherman's understanding of how the opponent was going to attack and their tendencies along with his anticipation made him a nightmare for Offenses.
I wonder if he's in contact with Woolen at all. He would seem to be the perfect mentor or at least person for Woolen to talk to about game situations and opposing players.

Sherm is indeed mentoring Woolen . Says he’s taken him under his wing . He said he told him “ they can’t call it every time “
Well if you’re on a bad Seattle team yes they can . But Woolen has such freaky gifts he doesn’t need that little grab of cloth Sherm did to stay in coverage . Sherman is still the gold standard in Seattle , kid has 6 starts but it seems the sky is the limit with the kid
