The 49er Game: how do we see it?

The Russ Bowl is over. Now we got the 49ers in Frisco. Their starting RB is out. Trey Lance looks like he's a barely serviceable QB. Geno can match Trey Lance. Our RBs can match Frisco's.

Frisco D-line can be pretty vicious. Bosa is no joke.

Kyle Shanahan isn't Nathaniel Hackett. He knows us. He will have his team prepared.

But all in all, a very winnable game against a division opponent we know well with an unproven QB. I think we can take them.

Seattle 23-Frisco 17.

Carroll matches up well with Shanahan as the record shows . We swept them with Jimmy G . I’m sure they will try to run to hide Lance and that’s an area of concern . With an athlete like Lance you have to expect anything but we just had a hell of a tune up vs an all time great scrambling qb. Surprisingly we threw more on first down then ran last week . And if the qb is completing 80+ % why not ? We only ran the ball 13 times . But Penny was a step here or there from 150 yards and a couple house calls . He lost 2 big ones on penalties . As has been mentioned Dallas and Homer look good . Our line is better then last year already starting 2 rooks and a new center . I expect we run more due to that front 7 to keep them honest . But Pete has shown he trusts Geno with the ball so who knows . Maybe an out and up to DK on first offensive play off play action .

Who knows . I predicted a fairly convincing win we didn’t get but it’s because we shot our selves in the foot as much as Denver .

I just wrote about this subject in another thread.

The Niners have a better defense than the Broncos. When healthy, Nick Bosa is one of the best edge rushers in the league, the only one better being TJ Watt. This will be Cross's first real challenge. Our OL held up well vs. Denver, except when it really counted, ie 5 minutes to go in the game.

Trey Lance has been nothing short of a disaster. However, last week's game vs the Bears was played in some of the worst field conditions that I've seen in several years. We'll see how he performs on a fast turf. The Niners have a good running game and with their defense, Lance doesn't have to put up big numbers for them to win, all he has to do is keep from turning the ball over. We gave up over 400 yards to Denver. They ran the ball at will, over 5 yards a pop, continuing a trend we saw in preseason. Russell had just one reception over 30 yards, meaning that there's a lot of open receivers at short range. I expect the Niners to pound the rock and throw the ball short to Debo.

I'm going with 20-10 Niners.

Nice thing about facing tough defenders on the edge with this team is A, our line is way better . We faced this supposedly great defense that now wasn’t because we won but Geno took 2 sacks , both on him although he escaped a couple including the first TD . Second thing is Geno is fearless under a withering rush if you look at his Pittsburgh start last year . I caught all kinds of crap suggesting he played well completing 72% of his passes to 10 receivers with a TD , 2 minute drive at the end 102 qbr with Watt sacking him 5 times , laying him out 3 more , tipping or influencing 3 balls . Geno was sacked 13 times last year , 1 per quarter and still compiled solid starter numbers . As long as he’s back there I don’t care how tough Bosa is . He’s no better then Watt . Plus Cross might be pissed about his second half and rag doll Bosa . No worries

Absolutely true. Shanny has painted himself into a corner in hitching his wagon to Lance. They were one of the favorites in the NFC and to start out 0-2, losing to two teams not expected to compete for the playoffs, one being a divisional foe, would bring on a true crisis. If any Week 2 game can be called a must win, this one is it.

I'm worried Shanahan will scheme up lots of creative run plays to stretch our porous run D. Obviously, Mitchell is out and Mostert is in Miami (?) now, but Jeff Wilson is no slouch. Deebo and Aiyuk will get backfield touch's as well. We will see how our rookie tackles hold up against their DE's, Bosa is a monster. Geno being sacked 5 times is not unrealistic. Niners secondary is just OK, IF Geno has the time in the pocket, I can see a few downfield shots to DK and Tyler, something we didn't see last week. After an emotional win and the short week, I would not be surprised to see us come out flat. Excited to see Kenneth Walker!

Let’s see . How many 6’7” phenomenal long armed rookies that run a sub 4.9 has that washed up old man Bosa faced ? Chubb etc was a good warm up. He might give up 2 to Bosa . Where was Bosa when Justin Fields was out there winning the game ? Isn’t bad weather defense weather ?
If the 9ers couldn’t stop Fields on a bad field good luck with Geno Smith and our offensive war chest on a fast track . Especially with a suspect secondary . Geno looked at every option last game , deep wasn’t there so he stayed underneath . He can throw deep . People are so wound up about Denver’s almost comeback they forget how many first game mistakes we made . I have it at 3 potential picks . Numerous missed tackles . Fail on a 4th and inches sneak playing Geno like a starter and going off guard instead of letting him just jump the pile like Jacksonville last year . Lose 2 big penny runs to penalty and a nice Geno scramble too . And still won as a 6.5 home dog.
The ceiling for this young fast team is unlimited .

How would Bosa have done vs Wj? And not saying Cross is ever gonna be him but the man was damn solid in his first NFL start . He may well shut him down . I see a good battle but nothing like 5 sacks .

Cross is listed as only 6'5, not 6'7.

This is an interesting matchup. We have a good record against SF, and some teams no matter how good play either worse or better against certain opponents regardless of talent or record.
We happen to have success against SF for some reason.

Like has been said above, SF has a lot of pressure on them this weekend and Lance especially so as he didn't show well.
We won't be surprising anyone with our Defense and it showed some real weaknesses in the run game and inexperience in the pass defense. I expect Shanahan to take advantage of what
he sees on film and expect some new wrinkles as well. On Defense I expect them to be quite aggressive and focus on making Geno 1 dimensional. Denver stopped us cold the 2nd half on
Monday night and that should bring some lessons for a very good Defense we will face.

If they come out strong and punch us in the face early, I don't know how this team will react. Some younger teams will be stunned by it and not react and others find that it's a team building
experience. If it happens it will be interesting to see the response. Since Denver was successful running outside the tackles it would seem obvious that SF will do the same with both run
plays and sweeps. Their RBs might not be as good as Williams and Gordon but Shanahan is a master at using plays to attack weaknesses. Watch out for Deebo.

SF has something to prove this game and their focus for their home opener should be pretty good, but who knows how Lance will react? He's the wild card in this game and at the same time
we are coming off an emotional win at home. Will we respond at the same level? I doubt it without the crowd on our side and I suspect SF won't have penalties that continue drives that
would otherwise have led to punts. If SF gets into a 3 1st and goal situations, I would expect they come away with more than 3 points.
I think we will be lucky to score 17 points this game, but can Lance engineer enough for the win? If not, expect a huge QB controversy in SF.

The bosa stuff was 100% a joke man . I’m well aware of Joey Bosa. But as I say Geno saw Watt on the road his first start in 5 years and absolutely got his ass kicked by Watt to the tune of 5 sacks , 3 knockdowns , 3 batted balls and a tomahawk chop that should have been a fumble but wound up an incompletion , still 72% completion rate , completions to 10 receivers , 4 scoring drives last 5 possessions to get to overtime where Watt finally got him. But not till he had driven a few yards from field goal range . No Penny either and a Hall of Fame qb on the other team . Nobody but me was impressed . Maybe start paying attention. It makes more sense now .

I have a body of work , very small but something to judge “ only “ 6’5” cross by and it’s looking pretty good . And if your a good to great tackle it’s even better if your faster . Faster is always better regardless of talent level .

I see Penny at 125 and a touch . Geno 235 2 touches one to DK . Meyers 1-2 fg .

I don't see it that way, at all. The Niners had two choices: Cut him, in which case he could have ended up with us, which would have been a nightmare for them, or resign him to a more team friendly ($7M) contract, about the same as what the Panthers are paying Sam Darnold as a backup, that provides them with a very good insurance policy, plus they can still trade him to some team, such as the Cowboys, that have a sudden, unexpected need at QB.

It might turn out to be misplaced, but the Niners have a ton of confidence in Trey Lance or else they wouldn't have taken such a big hit to get rid of Garoppolo, who wasn't a dog of a QB as he's taken them to two NFCCG's in 3 seasons, just not good enough to get them over the hump.

Having said that, there's an enormous amount of pressure on Lance and the Niners. If they start out the season 0-2 by losing to two teams judged to be far inferior, the natives are going to be out for blood.

Sorry. Money matters. I'll never forget Kenny Easley saying that he wanted to be paid $1 more than Ronnie Lott. It's an ego thing.

And as far as having to look over his shoulder, there's not many players in the league that don't have to worry about that. I'm not saying that he isn't miffed as neither you nor I know if that's the case. Geno is playing better right now then Garrapolo did last year anyway with his 20 TDs and 12 picks .

In his last 17 quarters of regular season ball he has 900 yards , 7 TD passes , a rush TD , probably around 100 rushing , 110 qbr . 1 pick 17 quarters ago when Lockett got tripped . 1 fumble . Now a 2-2 record with Seattle too . It’s going 3-2 .

What would make more sense would be the Cowboys, who just lost Dak Prescott for multiple weeks. There's 6 weeks between this weekend and the trading deadline, and a lot could happen.

Point is that one of the major motivations for the Niners re-signing Garoppolo rather than cutting him is so they can control where he goes.

Of course, part of the motivation for re-signing Jimmy G. is an insurance policy for injury, suspension, or non-performance by the starter. Lance has to realize that. It's not a vote of no confidence, it's simply smart football management.

I'm hearing that the Cowboys might take a peak at Cam Newton, which to me, would be absurd. If he couldn't learn the playbook after a year with the Patriots, I don't know why they'd bring him in and expect him to get up to speed in a week or two. But with Jerry Jones calling the shots, you never know. Andy Dalton is available, and he played for them a couple of years ago, so they might bring him in.

Also Brady had a coach who didnt give an F about the conventional wisdom you dont lose your job to injury although he was a complete Ahole to do that to Bledsoe. It worked out.

If Flynn hadn't been nursing a shoulder and big balls Pete not been coach Russ might have watched Flynn playing with the LOB. MOF pick a name from the qb class of 2012 and pair them with the LOB. That would be fascinating .
If Dilfer didn't tear his Achilles vs Dallas Hass might never have started again. If Chuck Knox wasn't a coach who didn't give a flying F about fan favorites Mud bone may never have started and I still have old timers argue with me it was the wrong decision to bench and cut zorn.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement for Trey Lance from former Rams coach Mike Martz:

“I want their eyeballs,” Martz said of the 49ers. “I’ve never seen anything about this kid (Lance) that was encouraging at all. He really has to plant himself to make a good throw. He’s not a quick decision guy. [Everything] about him being a mobile guy and making plays with his feet, he looked like a fullback stumbling around trying to run the ball to me. He’s not Lamar. I don’t know what he is. He’s not particularly good guy running with the football.

“Based on what I saw today he missed two guys completely by themselves. I know it was in the rain but quarterbacks do that, you make those throws. I know this, he can only go up, he can only get better, because you can’t get any worse that what he did [Sunday]. I’ve never liked him, I still don’t like him, I’d like to know what he does so well. Because he’s not a great passer, doesn’t have great skills, takes him a long time to set himself and throw the football, misses easy throws and he’s not a particularly good runner. Other than that he’s a hell of a player.”

But Martz didn't limit his critical remarks to Lance. Here's what he had to say about Bears QB Justin Fields:

I’m just shocked at the Bears. They took this quarterback (Fields), they went up and spent a lot to get him, and he was less-than-remarkable would be the kindest thing you could say about it. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen such a bad performance by a quarterback in his opening performance of the season. He was just completely awful.

“He really deflated the football team with his performance. When you get a quarterback that can’t do anything at all, and defensively you shut them out for a half, you kind of lose hope. Right now they’re a team without hope.”

It’s why they play the games . I think Frisco is gonna see a more polished Seahawks team . I know Vegas has us 8.5 but I’m seeing some analysts quite wary , picking us to lose by only 3. Hard to tell about the empty seats. At the NFCCG in LA last season, there were more Niners fans than Rams fans.

My weather app shows about 50% chance of rain Sunday at 1pm. But even if it does rain, it's very unlikely that we'll see conditions even remotely similar to what the Niners and Bears played in last week.

I don't know if anyone else has brought it up, but Pete seems to have some kind of psychological edge or mojo with Shanny...of course, most of it has been with Wilson as the QB, but part of the mojo is we know how to defend them, too. I see SF winning, but it will be a tight game that will come down to the final possession. There's no way Lance doesn't throw at least 1 pick. I don't know if anyone else has brought it up, but Pete seems to have some kind of psychological edge or mojo with Shanny...of course, most of it has been with Wilson as the QB, but part of the mojo is we know how to defend them, too. I see SF winning, but it will be a tight game that will come down to the final possession. There's no way Lance doesn't throw at least 1 pick. My buddy was telling me Pete is 15-2 against Frisco the last 8 years. We have beat Frisco the last four times we faced them under Shanahan. So we got a great chance of winning this week.
