Preseason Games

Postby RiverDog » Fri Aug 05, 2022 12:03 pm

I watched a small part of the Hall of Fame game yesterday, Jags vs. Raiders. Neither starting QB, Lawrence for the Jags and Carr for the Raiders, took a single snap, but both are locked in as starters. In addition, the HOF game is an extra game for both teams, so they'll each have 4 preseason games in which to get their starters whipped into game shape. With our QB situation up in the air, I would think that we'd see Geno and Lock both get a considerable number of snaps.

Surprisingly, Josh Jacobs got some work last night, and looked pretty fair in doing so, averaging 6 yards per carry. I doubt that we'll see any of Rashaad Penny in our first game or much at all in the preseason.

One thing that I find odd is that we're playing one team from the Eastern time zone (Pittsburgh) and two from the central time zone (Chicago and Dallas). As a rule, we usually stay close to home in the preseason. I suppose that since this season, we're playing the AFC West that they don't want to schedule those teams in the preseason, but that hasn't stopped them before.

If I’m the coach both guys play every game . They need as many reps as possible unless someone really makes a move up . Depending on who you listen they are so so to bad to occasionally good . Seattle apparently worked out a free agent QB yesterday . I’ll be curious the O line . I’ve heard Lucas hasn’t been first team at Rt. Not sure what you do with guys like penny . If he’s gonna get hurt he gets hurt . I’d like to see a bit of a competition between he and Walker unless they plan to keep both in the holster till the 12th when we start firing live rounds . If Seattle wants to compete the starters need reps . With a 12-4 team and a 10 year starter they were 2-3 when Wilson got hurt and hadn’t looked worth a damn on offense after resting everyone in the preseason .

I agree. We need our QB's to get as much work as possible, and the coaches need to glean as much information as they can in order to make an intelligent decision on who to go with. We no longer have the luxury of resting our starting quarterback.

I'm very curious about the OL as well. I wouldn't be shocked or concerned if Lucas doesn't make the starting lineup. As a matter of fact, it might be better for him if he didn't, give him a chance to get used to the next level before he's thrown into the fire by having to perform on every play.

If I'm Pete, Penny doesn't play more than a handful of snaps in each preseason game, maybe one drive with the first team and that's it. Use the opportunity to get Walker some touches, see what he's made out of.

It's going to be an interesting preseason. As a rule, I don't watch very much of or record our preseason games, but this year feels different. Between the offensive line, our QB competition, and the type of defense we'll deploy, it's heightened my curiosity.

I can't watch preseason games. They're so boring except the first half of the third one that is more of a true warm up game. Bunch of guys that aren't going to be on the team playing against each other in a scrimmage without much game planning where you can look like some superstar against the third stringers then do nothing against starters. I can never get into it.

That's much how I have felt in the past. But as I said, this year feels different. Besides, it will be nice to watch some football on my tablet in the evenings on my deck instead of getting bored with the Mariners.

You're retired now. You have time limited only by the hours in the day to do what you want.

LOL! Yeah, every day is a Saturday when you're retired.

But I've been in the rocking chair for over 4 years now, so this isn't the first preseason where I've had more time on my hands than I know what to do with.

What do you do in your free time? My dad golfs a ton.

You have any fun hobbies? Or just lots of reading and watching documentaries and such?

My golf partner moved away, so I haven't been golfing since the pandemic broke out.

We live on a 1 acre lot with about a 300 square foot veggie garden, so just keeping it up occupies a lot of time. We have a motor home that we go somewhere in about once every two weeks. I do quite a bit of reading and watching of documentaries and we have a 4 year old lab that gets twice a day walks. I have one Seahawks road trip planned this fall, to Detroit. We were going to go to Munich, but we couldn't get game tickets. Next spring, I'm planning on touring Japan along with visiting a couple of high school classmates that were exchange students. Thanks for asking!

Sounds like you have plenty to keep you busy. It's hard to imagine retiring. People seem to settle into it fine. I think I'd lose my mind not working, but we'll see if I feel that way in my 60s.

I like to watch some, to see how some of the top rookies do. But Thursdays game gave me a quote I loved.

From Dick Vermeil, talking about how tough it is to build a team and culture today with the limited practices:

“There is no correlation between practicing less and getting better. Never has, never will be.”

Vermeil did give a shout out to Chuck Knox in his HOF speech.

It’s been 8 years since I retired and haven’t regretted it a minute. The only thing I miss is the people who were good to work with.
The reason I retired was in 2013 8 people I either worked directly with or had worked with in the previous 5 years died.
4 people in the first 4 months and 4 more the rest of the year. I also developed some heart problems so when the numbers worked,
I pulled the plug. The last thing I wanted was to die and not experience the freedom of not having demands on my time put upon
me by outside forces. So now I do what I want, when I want. And it’s great. Golf the same day when someone calls, go for lunch or coffee with former coworkers or friends, and just live a relaxing life.

If it wasn’t for Covid, we’d be traveling the world, and we still intend to, but it’s not yet the same with the planes being
somewhat unreliable and the next Covid wave on the horizon. So we’ve only done a little traveling around home.

I like watching Seahawk pre-season games. Every year I'm excited to see the new draft picks and UFA's on the field trying to leave an impression. I watch a fair amount of their college tape and it's cool to see them in Seahawk unis, to see what roles they play vs what they did in college. I like to know as much about the players as I can, even the back end of the roster guys. You never know when some random late round player turns into a star.

Other teams pre-season games? Can't do it.

I’m less into preseason games then in the past . As a golf course supe I’m quite busy through October . But I remember 2 preseason games in the last 10 years . One was game 3 in 2012 vs KC. I had heard about this runt trying to upstage our FA starter . Flynn had some bad drops by TO but then Russ came in . There was a dead red breakdown right up the middle . He spun left and the guy missed and he spun back in and gunned it 20 yards on a rope between the numbers . I never saw a qb move quite like that I said ok start that guy . 1 play , forget 13 quarters .
The other involved Russ as well . He played 1 series . 3 for 3 for 75 yards and a TD . His performance was described as perfect . A few months later we were world champions . I’ll be tuned in this year
As for retiring I probably won’t be able to completely quit working . My occupation didn’t take good care of me as I used my disposable income on stuff , hot cars and boats, vacations , property . Always thought the market was a Ponzi scheme. Still do it’s just now the fed made it too big to fail. But I can do lots of things . I have an offer for 6 hours a week broadcast variety talk show . I’ve done outside sales . I know I can’t do what I’m doing too many more years .
But …….GO HAWKS!!!

Here's a good reason to watch preseason games:

These games are a chance to scout young players from other teams. By looking at the strengths and weaknesses of other teams we might find a gem on the waiver wire. For instance, if we play a team that has a strong first and 2d QB established, we would be looking at whatever backups they might cut that might be better than Eason. This week I will look at the Stealers to assess where they may have players that can help.

And, of course, I want to see our own youngsters. Nearly every year we find a rfa that makes the team and contributes, as in Baldwin in the past, and Mone currently. Basically, our depth is on display, and while the football games are meh, and I want to see it come together.

By the way, I watched the Hall of Fame game and enjoyed it. Not good football, but it was a football game and I hadn't seen one in, like, forever.

I like to see the new players on the team and how they are used.
We are playing against vanilla defenses and doing it ourselves, but you can still see if a player stands out or makes continuous bad plays.
From there we can get a baseline for the season to see how they progress.
