Bo Melton WR quick process

Postby tarlhawk » Sun May 01, 2022 9:24 am

Melton created buzz at the NFL combine by running the fastest 40 time of any Big Ten back with an impressive 40 time of 4.34 seconds. His speed, route running and versatility makes him a valued prospect that could help teams in multiple ways. His value as a special teams player gives him a chance to make an impact next fall.

Tony Pauline’s Scouting Report on Bo Melton

Positives: Quick, sure-handed receiver with potential as a return specialist. Smooth, fluid, and sells pass routes. Separates from defenders, tracks the pass in the air, and makes the reception in stride. Effective making the catch on crossing patterns and displays eye/hand coordination as well as focus.

Possesses soft and strong hands to snatch the ball out of the air and make the reception away from his frame. Comes back to the ball and always works to make himself an available target. Plays smart football, shows great awareness on the field, and helps out as a punt returner.

Negatives: Possesses average run-after-the-catch skill. Has a thin frame and struggles in battles. Doesn’t stretch the field like his 40 time would imply.

Analysis: Melton was a consistent receiver for Rutgers, doing the little things well and reliably making the catch when the pass was thrown in his direction. He performed well during all three days of Senior Bowl practices and is a late-round choice who could make a roster as a fifth receiver/punt returner.

Let's not kid ourselves that Bo Melton or Dareke Young are steals in the draft...Seattle utilizes 7th round picks to "claim" UDFA prize targets for great traits or isolated assignment claims. Both of these picks face strong competition in an already competitive WR room. Special teams gunner or return specialists (Punt or Kick Returns) is the shortest path to allow their further development...we'll see.

Pauline said he doesn’t have above average run after catch skills yet he led his division with the most
broken tackles after catch. I’m hoping he has good lateral quickness which would make him a good
returner on ST at the very least. He’s also getting a chance to learn from Tyler Lockett as he’s of a
similar style and size.
