I can't for the life of me understand a wife/woman beater. All I can say is that isn't how I was raised.
From what I've heard talking to the younger generation, the whole male-female equality movement has successfully taught them that "protect the female" is no longer the societal standard. If a female gets out of line verbally or physically, then you treat them like you would a dude.
Fortunately, the PC movement is making sure any kind of altercation is viewed poorly regardless of gender.
When you teach an entire generation of males that females are their equal, you're going to get this more often. Most of us older men (other than Sean Connery) were very much taught not to strike females save in extreme self-defense, but these younger males are raised with a greater sense of equity to put it kindly. Remember, we're all equal, even physically regardless of genetics or biology.
My generation ("baby boomers") was not absent woman beaters, and neither was my parents ("the greatest generation"). It's just that 30-40+ years ago, the woman seldom reported it, and even when they did, LE and DA's reacted much differently. It used to be that a woman had to file charges before LE would take any action. Now if LE get called to a domestic dispute, someone goes to jail. Today they don't necessarily need a complainant for LE to file charges. Back then they did.
Same goes for child abuse. I know of an incident from back in the 70's involving a minor who's parents, members of a religious cult similar to the Amish, repeatedly caught their son with a girl so they cut off his penis, couldn't get the bleeding stopped, and ended up taking him to the hospital, and the cops couldn't do anything because the kid wouldn't file charges against his parents. We also didn't have evidence so readily available, in particular, video evidence. About the only place where they had surveillance cameras was in bank lobbies. Now they're everywhere. We didn't even have 911. You had to haul out the phone book and dial a 7 digit number. Athletes and politicians were treated much differently by LE and the courts than they are today. There was no CNN, no 24-7 news organizations that reported on every single event, and certainly no internet or social media for incidents to be communicated over.
Essentially the environment was different for previous generations than it is for millennials. From the men/women I've worked with and come to know as friends, I have not detected the same difference in morals that you have. I'm not claiming that my impression is the correct one or that yours isn't, I'm just stating my own personal observations and what I've concluded from them.
IMO it only seems like there's more woman beaters because we hear more about them and LE takes action when they see evidence, which is much more readily available than it's ever been in the past.
