Naw, not even close!

The Temptations did a "funky" version of the Star Spangled Banner for a MNF game that was widely panned back in the '70's. The next time they got the opportunity to do the SPB at an NFL game they same it straight and redeemed themselves in the eyes of the uptight Old Guard LOL

I would place Fergie in the vein of Roseanne Barr rather than a Funky Hendrix or Temptations version.

Rosanne Barr didn't sing when she did the anthem, she just screamed in this scratchy voice then turned around and grabbed her crotch and spit (emulating a baseball player as it was prior to an MLB game). To me, that performance was in a category of its own.

The best singing of the anthem I've ever seen was prior to a Seahawks game (MNF I believe) in which Steve Largent was set to break the consecutive games with a catch streak, a grade school girl that hit the highest note I've ever heard sung. There wasn't a dry eye in the crowd.
