Pete Carroll To Return to USC

As a faculty member, not a football coach.

Apparently, he's not happy with his new position with the Hawks as an advisor:

Pete Carroll hasn't communicated with Seahawks at all despite advisor role, 'not desiring' return to coaching

He isn't returning to the sidelines, but Pete Carroll is going back to a place where he achieved some of his highest professional highs.

Carroll, who parted ways with the Seahawks in January following a 14-year partnership, has accepted a teaching role at USC, the school that he led to a pair of national championships in the 2000s.

"It's going to be a really exciting endeavor when it all is finalized," Carroll said on 93.3 KJR, via NFL.com.

The 72-year-old football lifer is no doubt excited about his new venture. But has he closed the door on a return to football?

"Well, you know, I get asked a lot, so I'm pretty familiar with answering that I could coach tomorrow," Carroll said. "I'm physically in the best shape I've been in a long time. I'm ready to be ready to do all the activities that I'm doing and feeling really good about it. I could, but I'm not desiring it at this point."

Good for him. He needs something to do with his time, and I think he can make an impact with the student body. I always figured he would get into broadcasting, but I think he wants that challenge of helping other make a difference. It would be interesting to know how much impact as the "advisor' role he was given with int he Seahawks organization, that he actually contributed to the current team. I venture to guess it probably wasn't a lot, but who knows how much interaction Mike Macdonald and Peter Carroll had.

I think his 'Advisor' role was simply a way to not embarrass him with a firing. I don't think he had much of any say at all in the ongoings of the team.

Yep. Like I said when the "reassignment" was made, they'd move him into a corner basement office with no windows next to the janitorial supplies closet. A rather ignominious way to end what was a borderline HOF coaching career. It would have been better had he retired and rode off into the sunset, but he was living in denial those last few seasons, thinking he was just that close to another Lombardi.

I'm wondering if anything changes in his contract, if he'd be able to return to coaching in the NFL some day.

I think out of respect and from a PR viewpoint the team would release him to take any coaching position he was offered and wanted.

Not without some kind of compensation from the signing team, or at least I hope not. The Saints got a #1 draft pick for Sean Payton. That's a little too much respect IMO.

Possibly, but I'm not convinced they would even do that. If it came to light that the Seahawks were stifling interest in Carroll because of compensation, it could look bad on the organization considering his success here.
I think and hope they would just let him go and finish turning the page to a new chapter in Seahawks football.

We'll have to agree to disagree. Letting Pete walk without some type of compensation hurts the team's chances. He's getting handsomely paid to do nothing, so I have no qualms over any perceived slight he may harbor.

I miss Pete. Such a fun coach to have as your team's head guy. He has so much energy even at 73 I imagine he'll keep busy until he's dead.

I don't miss him. As in a lot of relationships, you start to get tired of each other. I grew weary of his Pete speak, his over-the-top optimism, etc. I respect him for what he did for us, but I was ready for a change.

Pete's hyperactive. I swear, the guy is like a 5-year-old on a sugar high. It's not surprising that he got bored in his new job in the basement office.

Thee was a level of comfort with Carroll being here so long, but with comfort often complacency follows and I think that's where we were.
So I'm glad the change was made and I hope he does well wherever he ends up.
