OT - Mariners, wow?

So sorry to bring up the M’s on a Seahawks forum (edit), but it’s regionally very significant. The freaking Mariners are the next big thing. Julio, holy crap. And there’s so many more to go on. Eugenio, Castillo, Los Bomberos, Ray, Kirby, Mitch, Kelenic, etc. Kinda reminds me (and I’m not alone) of the 2012 Hawks brewing…
Last time the M’s made the playoffs I just graduated college from CWU. I paid an extra S*$ ton of money to Comcast at my first job in southeast Idaho to follow their run. This is fun again.
Hell yes!

I call them the Latin Smash Crew. They come in and wreck things.

1 game away from playoffs. We have pitching. We have bats. They need to get hot and healthy at the right time.

By clinching, assuming they do, there will be less urgency to getting Julio back from injury.

Yeah, I'm not used to this and need to start paying attention. I've sort of lost interest in baseball, mainly due to the Mariner's two decade long playoff drought.

They are a very fun team to watch.

Mariners clinch playoff spot for first time in 20 plus years. They did it.

Yeah, walk off homer in the 9th at home. Fairy tale ending.

Yep this team is something special alright! Of course they nail first playoff appearance in 21 years with a FREAKING WALKOFF! That hit is probably 2nd biggest behind Edgar’s Double.

Agreed. Edgar's double and Griffey's scoring from first literally saved the franchise. Without it, the team would not have gotten funding for what is now T-Mobile Park and the team would have moved.

Ironically, I kinda called the shot. I said to the group that baring a home run, that the game was going to extra innings, and the next moment, the ball was sailing past the right field foul pole.

Cal Raleigh broke the Mariner home run record for catchers. Cal been clutch all year.

That is awesome you called it. I can sorta top it, in a weirder/premonition-type way.

I was taking a power nap while working from home on Thursday. It was only like a 10 minute nap and a dream showed up with me being at the game looking down on Cal Raleigh as the catcher. The weird thing was Cal was on fire! It was scary as hell, and woke me up! I told my 9-year-old son about it, and he said during his at bat: "What if Cal hits a home run because of that dream?" I swear it was the most emotional game ending since Edgar's double scoring Jr.

A momentous hit by Cal. But before we start comparing it to Edgar's double consider the situation. If this was the last game of the season, win you are in, lose and you are out, then you can make the comparison.

It has more to do with the pure emotion of the hit. The pileup. The crazy parties in the clubhouse - and likely the city afterward. In my opinion it's 3rd place, but not since two clutch moments of 95'. Heck, good things (good vibes) hopefully will still happen during these playoffs. A la walk-off, season on the line, to top the Double.

IMO it's a fair comparison. If you were to give Edgar's double a 10, you could probably give Cal's walk off homer a 6 or 7. Ending a 21 year playoff drought, longest in any major league sport, is a big deal.

We have to keep in mind that the Mariner's history is so lacking in momentous hits that there aren't very many by which to compare.

Well, I didn't exactly call the shot. It was more like 'this would be a great time for a home run." That's cool about your son's premonition. It's the type of event he'll remember for the rest of his life.

The post game locker room interviews must have gone on for an hour. You would have thought that they had just won the World Series. One thing that the manager should be worried about is peaking too early, getting on such an emotional high that they lose their businesslike focus. There's still a lot of baseball left, and I'm sure that they don't want to limit themselves to a mere playoff berth.

I’ve yet to turn on the tube to watch . Caught a few innings here and there . Football is so much more a passion .

I’ve heard a bunch on radio . I was upset it was cutting into my Wyman and bob show but now it’s kinds cool
. I’l be watching their series . Their manager seems very intelligent, new school
, guru , whisperer . I wish them the absolute best . It’s just there’s one team that coujd miss the postseason a quarter century and I’d still be following them and it ain’t the mariners .

My attitude towards baseball is much like yours, which is sad as the sport was my first true passion and lasted for over 40 years. But I get the sense that, thanks to this year's Mariners, that I'm changing somewhat. I'll be watching them intently when the postseason comes.

The Mariners play the Toronto Blue Jays in a best of 3 series, all three games in Toronto, this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The Friday and Saturday games start at 1:07 PDT. The Sunday game, if necessary, starts at 11:07am PDT. The winner takes on the Houston Astros in a best of 5 series.

Finally, after over two decades, I have a horse in the MLB race. Damn Hawks had better be playing damn good if they want my undivided attention this Sunday.

Well that shows you how long it's been since I've paid attention to baseball! A 3 game playoff series? all in one city?! How the hell did that come about?

LOL! You and me, too. It was just a couple months ago that I realized that if the game goes into extra innings, they have a ghost runner that starts out the inning at 2nd base. Casey Stengel must have rolled over in his grave when they came up with that one.

Glad I'm not the only one that was shocked by all these changes. I haven't watched baseball since the Mariners went to the playoffs last time. I started following last year into this year. And I was surprised by the extra innings runner starting at second base and the three game series all in one city. I guess they are trying to shorten the games, so people will watch more and television will invest more. More changes coming next year too. Something about "the shift" going away and pitchers having 15 seconds to start their throw.

They already have a rule giving pitchers 12 seconds to deliver a pitch when there are no runners on base.

It used to be that baseball was a constant in an ever changing sports world. I can remember when they first introduced the DH, the most revolutionary change in the game since it was invented, and baseball purists wailed like a squished chicken. But ghost runners and banning the shift?

I am bi-sportal, and have followed both football and baseball fairly constantly since I was a kid. Starting with college football (my sister was at UW) and little league baseball, then the Wenatchee Chiefs (minor baseball) and Seattle Rainiers, and then the ecstasy of the Seattle Pilots, then Mariners, and Seahawks. I have always kept at least one foot on the fan wagon, except for when I was in the Army, and then for a year of unemployment after grad school (a period of wandering).

Watching this Mariner team develop over the last couple of years has been interesting, as they have developed one of the best farm systems going, and they have a ton of talent still waiting. Definitely an up time for the M's. Young Julio is a shoo-in for rookie of the year, and seems destined to fit in the line of Griffey, ARod, and Ichiro.

Ahh, the Seattle Pilots. The pitcher that won the most games in Seattle Pilots' history had one of my favorite last names: Gene Brabender. Try going out on a blind date with that name.

One down! Let’s f’n go M’s! This pitching staff is postseason fire. Not sure how anti vax Robbie will hold up tomorrow, but now we can dictate this series.

My thoughts exactly! I think we might have rattled the Jays today so hopefully Robbie knows some tricks of his old team. Luckily George Kirby is on standby if he gets rocked. Need some more key hits and we might just have this series nailed.

I’m a dud . Didn’t see a minute of the action . I was trying to find the game on some screwed up homeowners system at the inn at Spanish head in Lincoln city . I checked my phone and saw we were down 7 and gave up looking . Got a text from my son telling me we advanced .

Win or lose, this team looks like the start of something special. I wish Robbie Rey could get his stuff back to help make this run. Robbie can be good, but damn, he needs to get his mojo back.

Lucky for Robby our bats were on fire yesterday. These guys want to win. Houston is going to be a tough foe. They are good. And hard to beat. I hope Verlander is off his game if he made it back from his injury.

I really like watching this team celebrate their victories. They look like a fun bunch.

They haven't announced the starting time for Tuesday's game at Houston. I guess they're waiting to see who else emerges from the wild card round.

Both games had me riveted, but I watched game 2 at work, so no need to turn it off, & that was a good thing. What an amazing comeback! The last playoff memory I have is of my 5-year-old daughter cheering for Jay Buhner in her little Mariners cheerleader dress. She's 26 now, LOL. What a magical time to be a Mariners fan it is. I promptly put in a bet for the M's to take the AL pennant at 5-1.
