Run game

My greatest surprise and dissapointment has been our run game . Week one it seemed close to breaking out . Sunday had to be one of the worst rushing performances ever by a Pete Carroll team . We are dead last in the nfl in rushing .
As opposed to tackle play it seems the interior line is not getting push and is actually getting pushed into the backfield . I don’t know much about Walker yet but Penny is essentially a north south runner who finds a crease and explodes and they are on his legs before he can turn up
. Both he and Walker averaged 2.5 after he had averaged 5 the week before . Homer might need a a touch here and there but essentially this looks like a line issue with some schematics possibly thrown in . Are teams just keying on the run saying Geno can’t beat us? Let’s find out . If we’re gonna go down why leave any bullets in the chamber ?
I’m just gonna say it and I’ve not heard it said much . Not sure about Waldron . Especially after the doozy last game .

It’s just 2 games with a young OL.
Jackson isn’t playing well, but it takes some time for an OL to gel.
Maybe by mid season we will see some consistent progress.

Sticking to a short passing game and not stretching the field has not helped the run game. Lots of defenders close to the LOS.

We have to run outside the Tackles if only to loosen up the inside zone run game.
Right now as predicted, teams are stacking the box and although we’ve seen some runs outside
they have to become more of a real threat. Peteball has never done that here, though but maybe
he’s giving Waldron more room.

Penny has enough speed to run outside the tackles. Pete needs stop thinking he still has Lynch who could hammer a hole down the middle. He has faster RBs who need some space. Get Penny in space, he'll take off for big yards. Ken Walker seems the same way. Marshawn Lynch was a throwback we might not see again for some time. Most of these other guys are speed backs who need to get some space.

We're not seeing a lot of RPO's. Both Geno and Lock are competent runners, so maybe if we added a few to our arsenal it would help loosen things up a little.

Sure! Anything to mix it up a little and create some doubt in the Defenses mind.

Rookie Tackles, risk adverse scheme, QB who can't beat you. It all equals a defenses stacked against the run. Teams are daring the Hawks to beat them through the air and know that we won't even try. Bubble screens, Backs out of the backfield, getting the ball to your playmakers in space is something the Hawks need to do, but there has to be the threat of a deep passing attack and it simply is not there.

Has there been time ? For the record we threw more against Denver on first down than passed and moved the ball quite well in the first half . From then on defense has limited the pass game and stuffed our run game like I can’t remember in a long time . Very few quarterbacks can carry a team with zero run game . They say they will open up the playbook so let’s see what happens . We must score to win , especially with how the d looks

As long as Atlanta doesn't have a surprisingly brutal defensive line, we should be able to get the run going.
We'll see if Pete really takes the cuffs off Geno and let's him throw to open up the deep passing game. Right now all you have to do to stop Seattle is defend within a 10 to 20 yard box and you have Seattle beat.
Atlanta is a good team to try to open the offense against. If your offense can't get going against Atlanta, you are truly terrible.

I agree 100%. There are no more excuses if we can’t score Sunday .

Obi I am a realist . My optimism was based on fundamentals . A better than expected performance by Geno . Score incomplete . Hardly the worst problem . I felt we could run . Grade F. I still think we can run but we better start . I expected defensive improvement . Grade F but there’s guys flying around , nobody else has Woolen , it might get a lot better but it has to start now . It’s no shame losing to that pissed off 9ers team and there’s no style points on losses any more then wins .
If they lose at home to Atlanta with some of the teams they still have to play it’s probably gonna be a long year .

After 2 games the offensive coaches must have a good idea of the strengths and weaknesses of our line, and begin to plan the offense to fit. The center/right guard combo is cringeworthy and as usually happens in sports, when there is a weak spot, teammates try to do too much to help out and end up doing a worse job overall. It is early and I am probably seeing that spot too critically, but to me it is a problem.
My point, though, is that after 2 games we should see a more tuned offense, and see some good running.
It seems like a long time since we have had 4 reasonably healthy running backs.

Our best line was with Phil Haynes starting for Jackson . Gabe Jackson is a stiff . Maybe we owe our departed center an apology ? Blythe has been on the injury report . Is he playing hurt ? It was soooooo bad last week .
