Former Seahawk and WSU player is in critical condition, fighting COVID in a Yakima Hospital. Doornik is vaccinated, but suffers from an auto immune disorder.

One of my fav players of the day, I well remember his 126 yard performance in a playoff win against the Raiders in 1984. Played hard and high character. Prayers out to you

Wow, thanks for the info. We drove by Wapato High School, Doornik's alma mater, a while back and saw that they had named one of their athletic facilities after him.

I can't say that Doornik was one of my favorites, but he was one of those guys that didn't have a lot of athletic talent and survived on guts and intellect. I saw him both in the NFL with the Hawks as well as at WSU. As a little bit of trivia, the guy that hired me at my first job out of college once knocked out Dan's dad during a boxing match back in the days when boxing was an interscholastic sport.

It was his guts and hustle that made me love him....clutch on 3rd down

I always looked at him as an “everyman” type of player who made it because of hard work and attention to detail.
He wasn’t overly athletic but he made up for it with grit and determination.
I’m hoping for you Dr. Dan.

I remember that game. Wide spits on the line and hand it off to Dan. I loved his quote"Im slow but i make up for it by having no moves "

It doesn't. He has a very successful practice (internal medicine) in Yakima, no doubt took great care of his patients throughout this pandemic....knowing he could put himself at risk. We pray for him....and those like him during this battle.

Former teammate and radio broadcaster Steve Raible had some interesting things to say about Doornink:

“Just such a smart guy. And such a really nice guy, a fun guy and a family guy,” Raible said. “All those things you loved about a good friend is what he is I’m certain — as people’s family doctor. So that’s what’s makes this all the more heartbreaking.”

“He played special teams. He was a great receiver out of the backfield. He was a great blocker, protector of the quarterback. He was smart. He never made mental mistakes,” Raible said. “And he always seemed to come up with a big play when you needed one. He was just remarkable that way.”

“Here’s a guy who was helping others, and he was protected as best he could be, and he still got it. And it’s put him at death’s door. That should let all of us know how serious this is,” Raible said.

If there is any good to come from this, perhaps Doornink's plight will help wake up others and convince them to get vaccinated. Yakima County has one of the worst vaccination rates in the state.

I'm not sure why it would do that given he was vaccinated and still got sick. I'd much rather see Doornik live as that would be a far better example of the vaccine having life saving ability. A vaccinated doctor dying after taking the vaccine seems like the kind of case that would make the anti-vaccine crowd feel even more empowered. A vaccinated doctor living is a much better support for getting the vaccine.

I certainly hope Doorink pulls out of this. That's much better support for the vaccine and just a better outcome for Doornik.

Did you read Sam's OP? Doornink suffers from an auto immune disease, which makes vaccines less effective. He was depending on others around him to be vaccinated and/or adhere to protocols like mask wearing:

Yes. I read it. I just think your wrong in regards to how the anti-vaccine crowd will see Doornik's situation. And I'll leave it there.

I didn't say that they would. I said that they might.

Doornink is very popular in that area, is a primary care provider that has treated a lot of patients over the years, a true home town hero. And now, even though he knew that he was immunocompromised, he didn't shrink from his job by retiring or taking down his shingle and rather tried to help his community battle Covid as he knew that the area was in a crisis and desperately needed providers like him, he became infected himself and is fighting for his life.

That's a pretty powerful story that may resonate with some people.

The anti vax crowd are stupid. Nothing will change their mind till they or someone they love gets it and dies . Numerous anti vax radio hosts , preachers , politicians have now gotten ill or died . I’ve read the accounts of people about to be intubated shrieking for air and begging for vaccine to be told it’s too late . They are morons and they are screwing all of us .

Reports indicate he's off the ventilator, doing better, but "has a long road ahead".
