WFT next week

The next game against the Washington Football Team should be much more challenging than the one today against the Jets. WFT has risen up in the last few weeks. Phoenix from the ashes. And I'll tell you, I'm happy for Ron Rivera. Success couldn't happen to a classier individual. He waded into swamp when he took that job and seems to be pulling a very dysfunctional team together. Did I hear today on ESPN that they won today without the offense scoring any TDs?

That game is looking a whole lot tougher. I hope the coaching staff doesn't overlook it like it appeared they did with the Giants. I don't know how other people saw it, but it almost felt like the coaching staff thought they would faceroll the Giants and didn't plan for adjustments. The Seahawks looked shell-shocked by the Giants energy and gameplan against them. They can't afford to let that happen against Washington.

I've always been a huge Alex Smith fan, and now that WTF is no longer the foreskins I can root for them too. Just not next week!

I hope they keep their current name too. I kinda dig the number on the helmet sans logo.

It's intentional :) (another thing to like about it)

Although I like him too and am very happy for his comeback I’m hoping he’s out next week- he missed the second half yesterday with a calf issue.

Yessir, on his bad leg too. Hopefully it's nothing major but under the circumstances even a 'tight calf' could be a serious issue. We won't know till later in the week.

OK lets get this straight?

The Seahawks just beat the worst team in the history of the NFL!

The Seahawks just got hammered by the NY Football Giants

The Seahawks think they can ball with Was?

Was 28 Sea 6

LOL Nope

BTW How you think your going to make the playoffs with a 9-7 record? Huh?

If we stink up the joint Offensively and Washington has trouble with their Offense, we could see a George Allen special, something like a 9-6 score.
Their Defense is legit and young, so we have to be ready.

Because the WFT struggles on offense, I don't think they would get far in the playoffs but their D is really tough. They are the kind of team that gives the Hawks trouble.

I noticed that RW had little pressure on him yesterday from the Jets and he was connecting with his receivers again like we saw in the first several games. I'm thinking a lot of his recent struggles have been rush pressure related.

So, yeah, I'm guessing the WFT has set a precedent and eventually we will be the SFT. "Sea Hawks" probably doesn't fly well (excuse the pun) with green folk because it stereotypes raptors as aggressive.

I don't know if there's too many games when Russell doesn't have a significant amount of pressure, but I agree, he was handling it better yesterday than he has in the previous 4 or 5 games.

A little off topic, but it's hard to tell where this is all going to end. I see where the Cleveland Indians are likely to get rid of their mascot. I suppose the Kansas City Chiefs will be the next team to cave into the politically correct police. Shame on them for their tomahawk chop!

I think the Chiefs mascot is complimentary whereas the Indians mascot is demeaning. Kinda like the difference between a proud Zulu Warrior and little black Sambo.

I agree, but you would think that if that were the only problem that the vocal minority had with the mascot, the Indians would have simply changed the graphics to reflect a more complimentary image.

That's the route I'd have taken if I just had to keep the name. Personally though I don't see that name as having any greatlegacy (like the Browns do) tied to it.

Old but Slow wrote:The rather generic name: Washington Football Team, is growing on me. My choice would be to call them the D. C. Football Club.

The DC would ease the "which Washington" question. And as a "club" they add a polite element balanced with a more menacing side (as in caveman). And Football? Couldn't call it the Cricket Club.

And leather helmets.......

Ahh, an ObS sighting! And I see that his sense of levity remains intact. Merry Christmas to you, my friend!

My obvious preference, too. Changing the logo is a money making proposition as it would add a whole other line of clothing and other paraphernalia featuring the new logo, which leaves me to wonder if that were the only problem associated with the nickname, why not go that route?

The WFT is for real. I've watched parts of their recent games on the Red Zone.

The PC police have got it backwards. The term "Redskins" is actually a term used by some native American warriors to refer to enemies they had scalped. I love their proud warrior logo. They should keep it & just change the name to "Warriors".

As for the chop, it was a simulated show of defeating the enemy in war. Football is a competition loosely based on war. I see nothing wrong with any of it. I think it honors the native Americans to name any competitive sports team after them. I'm over the hypersensitivity.

The cartoon character is just that, a cartoon, or animation, like Tommy Hawk of Chicago. Not insulting to me at all. Neither is the cartoon Leprechaun of Notre Dame, for that matter, since I'm Irish American & not native American.

I ain't buying that at all. I've got a lot of family and friends that are a lot more Indian than I am and have never heard that before. Sounds made up to make someone feel better about their using it. It's a racial epithet just like the N-word. Glad to see it gone.

Back to the OP. Here's a summary of the walking wounded heading into Wednesday's practice. You'll have to sift through some of the Pete Speak:

Carlos Dunlap: Dunlap played through a foot injury in Week 13, but in an attempt to let that injury heal some, the Seahawks held him out on Sunday. Nothing is set in stone yet, but Dunlap is confident he will be back this week.

Shell and Ogbuehi: Shell returned to the lineup Sunday after missing two games with an ankle injury, but was unable to finish the game after aggravating the injury. "His comments were that he's not worse than he was last week, starting the week, so that's good," Carroll said. "He tweaked it a couple times in the game, and we determined that we didn't want to finish him."

On Ogbuehi, who has missed two games with a calf injury, Carroll said, "Cedric's getting ready to play this week too. He's going to come back with the mentality of Wednesday that he's practicing to play, so that's a good sign for us. We definitely need something to happen there, we need some help there, because we're scrambling a little bit to get guys on the field yesterday."

DK Metcalf: "I think he's OK today as far as I understand, but immediately after he felt it and it was bothering him, we didn't know if it was anything," Carroll said. "I can't tell you the extent of it yet, but at least he finished the game and played really well."

Penny and Dunbar: "Rashaad is going to practice as if he's practicing to play the game, so we'll see how that works out," Carroll said. "We'll figure it out by the end of the week, but he's going with the mentality that he's up and eligible and all of that, so we'll see how that goes. Quinton is really in the same vein, he's going to get ready to play in the game, and we'll find out at the end of the week and call it when we get all the information."

Greg Olsen: "He's challenging right now to practice this week, so we'll see what that means," Carroll said. "He's very, very positive and upbeat about the fact that he has a chance to get back here very soon, maybe this week or next week. I don't know what to tell you until we see him."

It's a good thing that we're getting healthier, but it's going to be tough against the WFT. Wow, their Defense looks real tough the more I see of it. They remind me of us in 2011 and 2012 when we were just starting
to get it going as a group. Young, enthusiastic, and aggressive.

WFT. Sounds rather euro I think, like a soccer team. And my observation is that Americans are fascinated by all things European so I expect that in time all the NFL, NBA and MLB teams will drop all but place references in their team names. That way you can completely avoid controversy over the name and just be blandly generic.

After reading your post, I decided to dig a little deeper than the source I got that meaning of the term "Redskin" from. It seems that there used to be a reference to scalping the opponent in the Redskins fight song:

Here's a paste of lyrics & reference to the song's history I found:
Several other lines found in the original were, however, altered. The original version included lines referring to the practice of scalping and featuring non-standard grammar, apparently in imitation of Native American speech:

Scalp ’em, swamp ‘um
We will take ‘um big score
Read ‘um, Weep ‘um,
Touchdown! — We want heap more

Pretty bad!
I concur that in all other historical references, the term "Redskin" is used to describe the native people of the continental U.S. & Canada, & not the condition of a bloody scalp. I stand corrected.
